Led by expert photographer Karoki Lewis the course will mix creative tuition, challenging assignments, delicious food and a luxurious setting, and is suitable for all levels.
With 300 sunshine days a year, Marrakech is a great winter destination. Where better to get creative than in the sumptuous surroundings of Vanessa Branson’s Riad El Fenn, a focal point of the Marrakech Biennale. Creativity is at the heart of the Riad which boasts one of the most important private collections of contemporary art in Morocco, including works by Bridget Riley and Antony Gormley.
With just 21 luxury suites and rooms and plentiful courtyards, roof-terraces and quiet corners, the Riad offers an informal oasis of calm amid the hustle and bustle of the Medina. When not being creative, guests can unwind on the vast 7,000’ roof terrace with sundecks, hanging gardens, roof-top putting green, shaded dining areas, three swimming pools and the best views in town, or relax in the private cinema, well-stocked library, spa, or authentic Moroccan hammam.
CREATIVE WORKSHOPS IN 2013
TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY (13-18 Jan 2013)
Marrakech, with its colourful souks, Moorish architecture and mountain landscapes, is a photographer’s dream and the perfect location to learn. Find your ‘photographic voice’ under the guidance of former Travel Photographer of the Year, Karoki Lewis, whose photographs have appeared in Conde Nast Traveller, the Sunday Times and Time Magazine. The bustling souks, the Ben Youssef Medersa and the Atlas Mountains will provide colourful and photogenic backdrops as guests learn about the important concepts of composition, exposure and portraiture, as well as practicing skills such as using slow-shutter speeds, controlling depth-of-field and anticipating the ‘decisive moment’.
Each day will consist of a tutorial, followed by a related assignment, and Karoki will accompany and guide aspiring photographers throughout. In the evenings, over drinks, the group will examine and discuss each day’s shoot, plus there’ll be plenty of opportunity to learn more during relaxed lunches on El Fenn’s spectacular roof terrace and during dinner in the restaurant. The highlight, however, is putting these new-found skills to practice on the final day with an excursion to the Atlas Mountains to capture the scene of a traditional Berber village or market.
Price: from £1,000 per person based on two sharing, including five nights’ full board accommodation at Riad El Fenn, house wine, transfers, tuition, supplies and all scheduled excursions.
