UK Picture Editors' Guild Awards 2011 Winners Announced

Three Getty Images photographers, contributors and freelancers have picked up prestigious awards at the 2011 Picture Editors’ Guild Awards, held last night in London Dan Kitwood scooped the Fotolia Photo Essay category, with Dave Benett and Matthew Lloyd winning the Celebrity Photographer of the Year and Newscast Young Photographer of the Year categories, respectively. The overall winner of the SABMiller Photographer of the Year 2011 award is Matt Dunham from The Associated Press. GETTY IMAGES CELEBRATES SUCCESS AT THE 2011 PICTURE EDITORS’ GUILD AWARDS

Getty Images’ photographer Dan Kitwood snaps up the Fotolia Photo Essay category, with Getty Images’ contributor Dave Benett and freelancer Matthew Lloyd winning the Celebrity Photographer of the Year and Newscast Young Photographer of the Year categories respectively.

London, 21 September 2011: Three Getty Images photographers, contributors and freelancers have picked up prestigious awards at the 2011 Picture Editors’ Guild Awards, held last night in London, with four Getty Images photographers also receiving significant commendations.

Fotolia Photo Essay: Getty Images photographer Dan Kitwood scooped the Fotolia Photo Essay category, which rewards standout photographers for their high-quality photojournalism. His unique and unprecedented series of images showcased a thoroughbred racehorse in surgery at Newmarket Equine Hospital.

·      Celebrity Photographer of the Year: Dave Benett, a regular contributor to Getty Images, picked up the coveted Celebrity Photographer of the Year award. Benett was recognised for his vibrant selection of images, including Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr at the launch of Mary McCartney’s new book, as well as Jessie J performing at the Brit Awards.

·      Newscast Young Photographer of the Year: freelance photographer Matthew Lloyd, was awarded the coveted prize in this category for the second year running for a folio of images all shot on assignment for Getty Images. His stunning portfolio of imagery, captured a wide variety of subjects, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, at the Epsom Derby, as well as Lady Carnarvon relaxing in Highclere Castle.

·      Highly commended awards also acknowledged outstanding work from Getty Images’ photographers Christopher Jackson and Chris Furlong for Royal Photographer of the Year; Dan Kitwood for Business Photographer of the Year and Mike Marsland from Wire Image, Getty Images’ specialist digital photo agency and wire service, in the Celebrity Photographer of the Year category.

This is the second year running that Getty Images’ has achieved such an outstanding result, with three of their photographers receiving coveted titles at last year’s awards, alongside two commendations.
