WORKING CLASS

October 7th, 2013 - Photographic Museum of Humanity presents Working Class, its latest curated online exhibition. The five galleries host the works of recognized photographers of the PMH online community like Bryan Schutmaat, Nick Ballon, Christian Rodriguez and Tatyana Palyga among others.

If there is a theme widely documented in the history of photography, that theme is the world of work and its implications. The first photo ever shot recreates a scene of a man working in the street. It’s author, Daguerre, was a forerunner and not only technically. Photographers have been documenting people working during the entire 20th Century, and the trend is still going on.

In just 5 galleries you will see a variety of styles, points of view and contents. Colorless days in an office, a group of individuals struggling to keep in function an airline devastated by a privatization, nomad families living in a circus life. From the American West to Bolivia and Vietnam, these galleries describe different work environments within contemporary society. Works that do not only defines people, but also dignify them.

GALLERY I: "COLORLESS DAYS"

Everyday routine in an office can transform life into an endless and monochrome boredom. Tatyana Palyga, an office worker herself at that time, portrayed that absurd and soul destroyer place of work. Colorless Days won a honourable mention in the PMH 2013 Grant.

GALLERY II: "GRAYS THE MOUNTAIN SENDS"

American West. His photos depict the scare that goes from the devastated mining sites to the people who have worked in them. Grays the Mountain Sends is the portrait of a place with no vital signs of work, the portrait of a lost cause.

In many situations, places tell about people. This happens in this collective show. Through these quiet images of workspaces, we can see different working conditions and places, imagining and wondering about the people behind these landscapes.

GALLERY IV: "EZEKIEL 36:36"

After having suffered the consequences of a privatization in the 90s, the Bolivian Airline LAB has been struggling to survive. Ballon's photographs approach a social situation with poetry, beauty and simplicity. Awarded a honourable mention in the PMH 2013 Grant.
