The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM was announced in June 2012, alongside the EOS 650D (Rebel T4i) SLR and EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM zoom. These two lenses were Canon's first to use a linear stepper motor for focusing, giving rise to the 'STM' designation; this motor type allows silent refocusing during movie recording, and has therefore become widely-used in lenses for mirrorless cameras. This means that in principle the 40mm STM should be well-suited to working with the hybrid AF systems in Canon's recent cameras, including the 650D and its replacement the EOS 700D (Rebel T5i), the EOS M mirrorless model, and the diminutive EOS 100D (Rebel SL1).

The EF 40mm f/2.8 STM has another feature which is new to the Canon EOS system - rather than taking advantage of a conventional micro-motor or USM AF, Canon has introduced a stepping AF motor (STM). It is meant to provide a smoother auto-focusing experience in movie or Live-View mode. However, the camera has to be optimized to take advantage of this and as of now only the EOS 650D qualifies.

The diminutive Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens immediately inspires the high-pitched talking-to-a-baby voice from its first-time viewers, with short drawn-out words and phrases such as "awwwwe" and "it's sooooo cuuute" being especially common. It is of course the size and weight of this lens that triggers this response.

The Canon EF 40mm f2.8 STM is the company's first 'pancake' lens, designed to be as small and light as possible. Measuring just 22.8mm thick, it protrudes to roughly the same degree as the grip on many DSLRs, and at 130g you'll hardly notice it when mounted. This in turn makes even larger DSLRs feel much more portable than before, and allows you to squeeze them into smaller bags or even certain pockets.

The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is a slim, compact pancake type lens, which is compatible with Canon EF and EF-S camera bodies and costs around £230. A fast f/2.8 aperture should make this lens ideal for taking pictures in reasonably low light conditions and focusing is powered by Canon's new STM focusing motor.
