Conclusion

The Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM is a very capable macro lens with a standout magnification of 1.2x and those innovative built-in LED lights.

The Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM's build quality is good enough rather than outstanding, but it's still well-matched to the EOS M3 camera that we tested it with. Auto-focusing is quiet and quick on the M3, with the ability to instantly manually override it via the focus ring if required proving a nice touch.

Image quality is very good, with sharpness satisfactory at both the centre and the edges of the frame when shooting wide open at f/3.5 and excellent from f/5.6 onwards. Geometric distortion is impressively low and chromatic aberrations aren't very apparent, although there's obvious corner shading at the maximum aperture.

As the only macro lens in the still fledgling EF-M lineup, the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM proves itself to be a well-appointed optic in terms of specification that provides sharp results throughout the frame, althought the effective focal length of 45mm may prove too short for some close-up subjects.
