Well over two years into the existence of the Canon RF Lens series, the lineup remained devoid of what I consider a true macro lens, one that reached a full 1.0x maximum magnification. Sure, there were RF 35mm and 85mm lenses with enough magnification capabilities to achieve the word "Macro" in their names. While the 0.5x magnification those lenses produce is quite beneficial, macro photography is much more exciting at 1.0x, a 1:1 reproduction ratio — and beyond. The Canon RF 100mm F2.8 L Macro IS USM Lens brings is that "beyond" feature.

The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM takes everything that was great about the EF version and makes it even better. Magnification? Boosted to 1.4x. Stabilization? Upped to 8 stops (on the EOS R5 and R6). Bokeh? Even more beautiful, thanks to a control ring that shifts the lens elements. Focus and breathing? Faster and more controlled than ever. It's a superb standalone portrait lens as well, with pin-sharp rendering and a flattering focal length. If you want to shoot close-ups of small things and large things alike, you've just found your next purchase.

At first sight, you might be forgiven for thinking that there’s nothing particularly special about Canon’s latest pro-spec macro lens for its EOS R full-frame mirrorless cameras. After all, the RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM is named almost identically to its DSLR predecessor, the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. But while the likes of Nikon, Sigma and Sony have all made resolutely conventional macro lenses in the 90-105mm range for full-frame mirrorless, Canon has thought differently and added some intriguing new features.
