ioShutter Review

Conclusion

The ioShutter is a really interesting accessory that, if you're thinking of getting into any kind of tripod mounted fine detail or long exposure work, could make an essential part of kit. It's marketed as making sure you have your remote trigger on you at all times. However, with the cable being an integral part of the system, the only way we can truly say that's the case is if you don't need a cable; if you forget the cable, you don't have your release on you.

That would need some kind of wi-fi connectivity, which is happening already with Samsung cameras and phones. The Samsung Remote Viewfinder will also show you what the Samsung camera sees on your phone. That's pretty neat stuff and eventually, cameras will be brought out with wi-fi integration as standard. In the meantime, we're back to using old fashioned cables.

The more important aspect to consider is the price. Even with the Pro upgrade on the app, it's still nearly half the price of the comparable Canon release. Sure, there are other releases from third parties that are a similar price, but it's unlikely they give you the flexibility of the ioShutter with the adjustments being made in one second increments.

Saying the app is free and then charging you for the upgrade to make it anywhere near reasonable enough to use is a bit sneaky. If you don't upgrade, it's likely you'll end up not using it after a while and that'll be a waste of your money. The best thing to do if it's niggling you is to get over it. Because, even though you have to fork out again, in the grand scheme of things, it's negligible and with all that in mind, the system is a sound idea and a pretty good investment.
