JPEG Mini Pro Review

Performance

JPEG Mini Pro is a very simple programme in terms of interface, but it has great applications for space saving, or for sending photos online, especially when internet connection speeds are slow.

The optimisation process is very quick, even when converting a high number of files, and the fact that you maintain image quality and resolution is fantastic. Printed images appear to be exactly the same despite the reduction in size, which is even better news.

Files also retain your meta data, so you’ll still see anything that is attached, such as copyright or camera info. As an example, a file that I converted which started at 4.43MB was just 1.52MB after conversion.

JPEG Mini Pro is compatible with images up to 60 megapixels in size, which makes it compatible with all of the current cameras on the market, including the 50 megapixel Canon EOS 5DS/R.

It would be nice if this software had some ability to compress raw files, as it’s those files which are the real space hoggers on most photographer’s computers.

Conclusion

JPEG Mini Pro is a very useful app which has great applications for photographers who are looking to save space on their hard drive. However, many photographers may be distrustful of overwriting their original files, just in case something goes wrong.

For this reason, it’s great that you can also choose to save the photos in a separate folder. I think that most photographers will use this software to reduce the size of files for optimising for web usage - for example attaching a file to an email, or uploading to websites and online galleries. Professionals who share galleries, for instance with wedding clients, may find this a piece of software that you use all the time.

While it’s a shame that it can’t handle raw files, the technology behind JPEG Mini Pro is great, if on the expensive side. For an app that does only one thing, you may think that the price is a little on the high side - it’s worth downloading the free trial before you commit to buy just to make sure it’s something you’re impressed with first. That said, if it’s a piece of software that you use very frequently, it suddenly starts to feel like good value for money, especially when you consider the time and space it can save you in the long run.
