i know styling shouldnt play a big part on how a lens performs but WOW that sure is an ugly looking lens!

This lens really needs the optional HB-N101 lens hood to improve contrast under certain lighting conditions. Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to find any in stock in the United States. I’m using a threaded 40.5mm rangefinder hood now, but the proper bayonet mount hood would be vastly easier to use. About my only disappointment with the Nikon V1 kit lens is that they did not include the lens hood.

Shouldn’t it be approximately 27mm - 80mm?

After some time with this, finally getting the HB-N101 lens hood, I’m really happy with this lens. Now Nikon need to introduce a fast (f2 or larger aperture) lens for the Nikon 1 system. The ergonomics are great, especially the push button to activate the camera. Filter choices are a bit weird, though either a 40,5mm to 43mm or 40,5mm to 52mm filter will fit within the HB-N101 lens hood, allowing more choices and easier to find filters.
