“I was also impressed with security features. The zippers can be locked with a very cleaver combination lock mechanism, which also has a TSA key. This means that if you have to check the bag for any reason, it can be locked, yet still is accessible by the TSA. There is also a small hidden compartment at the rear of the bag which contains a securely attached steel cable. This allows you to lock the bag to a stationary object – handy when you want to leave your locked bag in a hotel room, for example.”

PMA 2007: The Sony GPS-CS1KA GPS Unit kit with Picture Motion Browser software provides image positioning and online mapping capabilities with a wide range of cameras. Picture Motion Browser software is compatible with all digital cameras conforming to the Exif 2.1 file specification. This means in practice that the GPS-CS1KA can now be used successfully with all digital cameras produced within the last few years, including most non-Sony models. The Sony GPS-CS1KA GPS Unit kit will be available throughout Europe from February 2007.

PMA 2007: The Sony FA-ST1AM Sync Terminal Adaptor for the Sony A100 DSLR links this camera with external studio flashes for more versatile lighting effects. The FA-ST1AM Sync Terminal Adaptor will also offer full compatibility with future Alpha DSLR camera models. The new Sony A100 Sync Terminal Adaptor will be available throughout Europe from July 2007.

hueyPRO is a new addition to Pantone’s huey family of display calibration products. The new device is aimed at photographers and creative professionals who want to improve color clarity and consistency across multiple CRT, laptop and LCD displays. Like its sibling huey, hueyPRO delivers professional results without requiring expertise in color management. hueyPRO will be available in April 2007 for $129 US. PMA 2007: Lexar Professional UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) memory cards are speed-rated at 300x, or capable of a minimum sustained write speed of 45MB per second. The cards have to be used with a UDMA-enabled device, such as Lexar’s new Professional FireWire 800 Reader, to achieve this speed. Intriguingly Lexar have also revealed that “several UDMA-enabled digital camera backs and digital SLR cameras (are) expected to be announced later this year”. Lexar Professional 300x speed-rated flash memory cards will be available in April in capacities of 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB.

“The data speaks for itself though, the P-5000 performed slower in every test, with the solitary exception of the Microdrive which wrote faster in all three tests. If you’re not too worried about access times or if you don’t have access to a computer, then these figures won’t mean much, after all they are only comparative, but since you can get a decent laptop for not much more than the cost of the P-5000 it’s worth thinking about.”

Kingston Technology have launched a special microSD card, with dual adapter bundle, which provides maximum compatibility of microSD Flash memory cards across multiple devices. Jim Selby of Kingston Technology commented “With microSD cards being used in many multifunctional handsets, Kingston saw an opportunity to create a very practical product - costing considerably less than buying three different memory card formats of the same capacity.” Consisting of a 1GB microSD card, a microSD to miniSD card adapter and a microSD to full size SD card adapter, the new microSD Dual Adapter Pack costs just £10.60 (plus VAT).

“Unique to the Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 Ballhead is the aspherical ball. As the load on the head is moved away from center, the effects of gravity increase. To offset the higher gravitational effect, more ball tension is needed. Conventional ballheads require correcting tension control adjustments to be made. The Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 Ballhead, because of its elliptical ball, automatically adjusts to handle the off-center load. In other words, the tension automatically gets tighter as you move the load off-center. And it works as advertised. Very nice.”

Lexar has today introduced a 133x speed-rated Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) flash memory card designed for professional and high-end amateur photographers. The Lexar Professional 133x 4GB SDHC card delivers a minimum sustained write speed capability of 20MB per second. Lexar Professional SDHC cards will be available in March, price to be announced.

SanDisk have today introduced a 4Gb microSDHC card - the largest capacity of the world’s smallest removable flash memory card. The SanDisk 4GB microSDHC card can store more than 1,000 digital songs, 2,000 high-resolution pictures or up to 8 hours of MPEG 4 video. Retail release of the card is planned for later in 2007.

A new range of translucent, reverse print, vinyl and pop-up film products from ILFORD is aimed at professional photographers. The new professional range will go on sale in April 2007 and will be available in 17” - 44” rolls with a single roll minimum order quantity. The new product range is also compatible with the ILFORD STUDIO software.
