As part of the inaugural season at The Met Breuer, the exhibition diane arbus: in the beginning will open on 12th July, featuring more than 100 photographs from one of the most influential and provocative artists of the 20th century. This landmark exhibition will highlight never-before-seen early work of Diane Arbus, focusing on the first seven years of her career, from 1956 to 1962, the period in which she developed the idiosyncratic style and approach for which she has been recognized, praised, criticised and copied the world over. "It is a rare privilege to present an exhibition this revelatory, on an artist of Arbus's stature. More than two-thirds of these works have never before been exhibited or published," said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. "We sincerely thank the Estate of Diane Arbus for entrusting us to show an unknown aspect of this remarkable artist's legacy with the camera." The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue which includes two essays: "in the beginning" by Jeff L. Rosenheim and "notes from the archive" by Karan Rinaldo, Senior Research Assistant. The book is published by The Met and distributed by Yale University Press (hardcover; $50).

Muhammad Ali: Fighter's Heaven 1974 is a new title from Reel Art Press. On 11-12 August 1974, photographer Peter Angelo Simon was invited to experience the private world of Muhammad Ali as he prepared mentally and physically for the biggest challenge of his life - an attempt at regaining the world heavyweight boxing championship title that was stripped from him when he refused the Vietnam draft seven years earlier. This two-day photo-essay includes many previously unpublished photographs and a foreword by D.A. Pennebaker, the foremost chronicler of American counterculture in the 1960s. “I shot 33 rolls in the two days,” the photographer says. “Ali said nobody had ever taken so many pictures of him. I believe these photographs reveal aspects of Ali’s fascinating character not previously seen.” The 176-page hardback will be available from 23 August 2016 for $49.95.

A Show of Hands by photographer Tim Booth is an inspiring collection of the hands of Britain. A display of intricately striking monochrome images, the book was inspired by Tim Booth’s grandmother when he photographed her 94 year hands and found inspiration in the stories they could tell. Now spanning 20 years of photography, the labour of love has continued into a collection of over 110 hands dedicated to an art, job or tradition in the UK. Each portrait – shot only in natural light - is accompanied by a short story and quote from the sitter to put the hands in context of the history behind them.“I flick through this book and even now I feel humbled at the people I was able to meet and talk to and the memories these hands evoke,” explains Tim. “What started with my grandmother has taken me on an incredible and fascinating journey and I’m delighted to be able to share the hands of these wonderful people.” A Show of Hands will become available on 6 October 2015.
