Epson Stylus Photo R300TrustedReviews have published their review of the Epson R300 photo printer, which offers convenient and innovative features such as printing directly onto the surface of ink jet printable CDs and DVDs, and being able to print photos with or without a computer.

“This is a commendable photo printer for the money, which produces very high quality prints on a variety of media. However, there’s a query over its ability to feed plain paper consistently, and don’t be tempted to rush out a text document on it – the text speed is low. If you go for one of these, it’s worth paying the extra for the colour LCD screen at purchase, rather than upgrading later.”

Epson Stylus Photo R800 PrinterBBC News are running an interesting article that claims home printing can be cheaper than high street developers. PC Pro Magazine tested 100 (!) printers, including the Epson Stylus Photo R800 (pictured), to try and find out if they produced cheaper prints than your local photo lab.

“Some High Street photo shops can be the cheapest when it came to developing prints that were 6x4in, said Mr Ross, but the test revealed that images 7x5in and 8x10in in size were cheaper to produce at home.

According to PC Pro, producing a print 8x10in on an Epson R800 printer using top quality paper costs £1.87. At Jessops the same image would cost £2.50 and at Snappy Snaps £9.99. A 10x7in snap at Boots would cost £4.99.”

HP Photosmart 2610Trusted Reviews have just reviewed the HP Photosmart 2610 all-in-one printer.

“This is a well-designed machine which genuinely warrants the term all-in-one. However, unless the colour print samples we saw from our ink-usage tests are not representative, we feel that hp has some problems with ink placement on plain paper, which could drastically affect its running costs. But assuming that the problems we encountered were due to a defective ink cartridge, hp has a great all-in-one product on its hands.”

Canon PIXMA iP5000 PrinterPhoto-i have posted a review of the new Canon PIXMA iP5000 printer, which features the industry’s first 1 picoliter droplets.

“Monochrome printing is well under control but not 100% neutral, there is a slight overall warmth to the image, rather like the Agfa Portraiture photographic paper. I do not find this objectionable, but the purist may prefer to print 100% neutral grey tones. I tried the Greyscale setting from the printer settings and this had little if any effect.”

Canon ChromaLife 100Some exciting news this morning for everyone who loves the speed of Canon printers, but hates the fact that they don’t have archival-quality inksets. PhotographyBLOG reader Phil Aynsley has sent me a translated version of a page from Canon Japan’s website, which talks about a new ChromaLife 100 inkset using BCI-7 dye-inks, with promises of 30 years light-proofness under glass and 10 years antigas fading when used with Canon’s “genuine photograph paper”. Let’s hope it leaves Japan and reaches the rest of the world soon…

Epson Stylus Pro 4000Digital Outback Photo have started a diary-like review of the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 inkjet printer.

“The 2200 is gone, because I see no benefit to having both the 2200 and the 4000. Don’t get me wrong. I have no qualms with the 2200. It is a great printer in its own right. However, in my situation the 2200 and the 4000 serve the same purpose. They both have dual matte & glossy blacks and they both can print 12 inches wide but the prize goes to the 4000 because it can use 220ml cartridges and print up to 17” wide, not to say anything about its much higher speed and it’s industrial quality built.”

HP Deskjet 6840PC Magazine have just reviewed the new wireless HP Deskjet 6840 printer.

“There’s one big difference between the HP Deskjet 6840 Color Inkjet Printer and almost every other personal ink jet on the planet: Built-in networking with both an Ethernet port and 802.11g if you want to go wireless. This alone makes the 6840 viable to anyone who has a home network or is looking for a personal printer to use in the office. There’s also a USB 2.0 port if you want to connect the old fashioned way, and even a PictBridge connector for cameras.”

HP Photosmart 375ByteSector have just reviewed the new HP Photosmart 375 compact photo printer.

“With its folded up backsides, and small dimensions, the 375 looks like a toaster designed by Apple. Its lines are very smooth, it has a clean look and it looks inviting. The tilt-up screen is a great addition, and it tilts up far enough for you to be able to operate the printer while sitting in front of it, not above it. When they pop out, the back panel becomes a tray that holds up to 20 photo blanks, and the front panel reveals slots for every kind of memory card, and a tray for printed photos. The Photosmart 375 is a clean, good looking printer that doesn?t let form get in the way of function.”

HP Photosmart 375TrustedReviews have just reviewed the new HP Photosmart 375 compact photo printer.

“In conclusion, I have to say that the PictureMate is the better quality printer with its clearer branding, superior prints and simpler way of purchasing consumables. It is also considerably cheaper than the 375 at around ?125 including VAT ? that said, the Photosmart 375 is bringing a 2.5in colour screen and bundled Bluetooth adapter to the party, which justifies some of the cost. The tiny size of the 375 is also a major plus if you are going to be on the move, while the Photosmart series? built in battery will no doubt be a hit with anyone that needs a mobile dark room.”

Canon PIXMA iP8500 PrinterSteves Digicams have just reviewed the new Canon PIXMA iP8500, which is is Canon’s first ChromaPLUS eight-color ink A4 format photo printer.

”...if you are one of those people (like me) that just have to have the best then this printer is for you. The 8-color ink system yields awesome looking prints and the super-wide print head makes this the fastest letter-size inkjet photo printer on the market. Just remember that this printer uses 8 ink tanks and these ink tanks and the cost of special photo paper can certainly add up in the long run. If you only print photos every now and then it’s probably a lot more cost effective to have your prints made at WalMart. However - if you’re like me, to heck with it!”
