HP Designjet 130 PrinterAfter yesterday’s review of the HP Designjet 30 and HP Designjet 130 printers by Digital Outback Photo, there’s another new review today by Photofocus Magazine of the Designjet 130 (found via Digicamera.net).

“HP’s DesignJet 130 is a direct competitor to the Epson 4000. But because it is priced between the Epson 2200 and the 4000, it can actually steal sales from Epson in both markets. Normally, I would assume it has no chance against giant Epson. But in this case, I’d be wrong. Photographers who want to make large prints should strongly consider this sleek and impressive printer.”

HP Designjet 30 PrinterDigital Outback Photo have started to review the large format HP Designjet 30 and HP Designjet 130 printers.

“So far we don’t have a lot of experience. But what we see looks very good so far. Including the prints we have seen at Charlie Cramer’s studio we think that the HP DJ 30/130 is a strong solution for glossy media.

We like the gloss and satin surface quite a bit
Blacks are excellent and deeper than the Epson UltraChrome inks can produce
Some gloss differential (also called bronzing) but a lot less than on the Epson printers with gloss media”

Canon i9900 Printercreativepro.com have reviewed the 8-colour Canon i9900 printer (also known as the i9950), which can create a 13 x 19-inch borderless photograph in under three minutes and has a maximum resolution of 4800 x 2400 dpi (found via digicamera.net).

“In the interest of full disclosure I must admit that, when it comes to photo printing, I have been a devout Epson chauvinist. Yes, down through the years, there have been some very nice photo printers from other vendors, but overall, Epson has always had an edge in terms of quality, longevity, and overall value. Therefore, after several months of using Canon’s new i9900 Photo Printer, I’m surprised to say that not only am I satisfied with my prints, I’m a bit relieved to be rid of some perpetual Epson hassles (more on that anon).”

It seems that prints are still the way that most of us want to view our photographs, according to a recent IDC survey, with over 60% of people saying that they preferred a physical print to viewing images on a monitor. The number of megapixels is still by far the leading criteria for deciding which digital camera to buy, and France takes the most pictures out of all the European countires surveyed.

IDC’s European Consumer Digital Imaging Survey Highlights Key Growth Opportunity in the Home Printing Market

19 Jan 2005

LONDON, January 19, 2005 — IDC’s European Consumer Digital Imaging Survey has brought to light several key priorities and preferences in consumers’ experience of digital photography and photo printing. Most notable is the fact that the majority of respondents (62%) either agreed or strongly agreed when asked if they get more pleasure out of seeing a good quality printed photo rather than viewing the image electronically on a screen or LCD. Of the countries surveyed, respondents in France gave the most positive response to this question with 72% expressing this opinion.

Have HP shot themselves in the proverbial foot? Yes, according to Boing Boing, who report in 2 separate stories that HP have decided to region encode HP inkjet printers to only accept region appropriate ink cartridges. This wouldn’t be an issue if the prices were similar worldwide, but apparently the cost of a HP cartridge in Europe is a lot more than the equivalent cartridge in the USA. In the second story, an anonymous HP employee replied:

“You may have a valid issue with respect to how the company should try to manage the effects of currency fluctuations, but I think the conspiracy theory about a one-time gouging of Europe to make a fast buck is a red herring. The only real solution to this might be truly dynamic, global pricing—which might work if HP only sold direct over the web, but real world sales channels consist of a web of retailers and resellers who cannot support it “

Lyra Research Forecasts Ink Jet Photo Paper Shipments Will Double by 2008; Growth Will Be Driven Primarily by Digital Camera Ownership

NEWTONVILLE, Mass.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Jan. 18, 2005—Lyra Research forecasts ink jet photo paper shipments will double, increasing from 2.6 billion sheets in 2003 to 5.2 billion sheets in 2008, a compound annual growth rate of 15 percent. Growth in the ink jet photo paper market will be driven primarily by worldwide increases in digital camera ownership coupled with the widespread availability of low-cost ink jet photo printers. While many photos printed at home are currently printed on plain paper, use of gloss or semigloss photo paper will increase as snapshot-sized A6 or 4 x 6-inch prints grow in popularity.

Canon PIXMA iP6000D PrinterGlobetechnology have just reviewed the six colour, 4800 x 1200 dpi Canon PIXMA iP6000D printer, which uses FINE (Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology with 2-picolitre Micro-Nozzles and has card slots for all popular brands of memory card.

“The printer uses six ink colours and has separate cartridges for each. This is something I like to see on photo printers because ink consumption of the tints can vary dramatically and with individual cartridges, you change only the cartridge that’s depleted. Print quality is excellent: a bit on the warm side but very sharp when driven by a computer. However, 4-by-6 snaps printed from a memory card seemed a little soft.”

“The biggest issue with graphics was obvious banding in default mode. Most of our test fonts were readable at 4 points, with none requiring larger than 8 points. The only flaw worth mentioning with photos was a visible tint in our monochrome test photo. Quality for scanning and standalone copying was more than acceptable, although running copying from the front-panel controls produced better color fidelity than giving a copy command from the computer.”

You’ve just been given a digital camera for your Christmas gift and gone crazy taking 100’s of pictures, now that you don’t have to worry about expensive film and processing. But what’s the best solution for actually making prints of them - do it yourself on a photo printer, or take it to your nearest store? News-Leader.com claims that the majority of you are leaving it to the experts:

“The availability of special theme cards and treatments, along with competitive prices, will lead 37 percent of digital-camera owners to use retailers and 15 percent to use online services this year, estimates InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, a Massachusetts researcher.

That’s a big increase from last year, when about 14 percent had pictures printed by retail processors and 9 percent used online services, said InfoTrends analyst Ed Lee.”
