Children can upload their photos onto their own gallery pages with the possibility of winning awards and prizes including Nikon cameras and the opportunity to have their photos published in a Diddipix yearbook. Calumet UK has launched a brand new website completely dedicated to its rental customers. Simon Browitt, head of Calumet Rental in London said: “Now, it’s never been easier to rent equipment from us. We have an extensive inventory of photographic equipment; cameras; digital equipment; lighting and studio products. It could be a Canon 600 mm lens – which costs upwards of £10,500 to buy – but we’ll rent it for £90 a day plus damage waiver insurance. Or, at the other end of the scale, we could hire out a remote timer from about £10 a day.”

Yahoo! has announced a major update to Flickr. "We’re releasing a Flickr that’s more spectacular, much bigger, and one you can take anywhere," the company said in a statement. Not only does Flickr sport a brand new look and redesigned user interface - it now offers up to 1TB of free storage to every user, allowing you to "share your photos in full resolution." There’s also a new slideshow mode with elegant transitions, an Activity Feed that combines users' recent uploads with those of their contacts, and an option to choose a customisable cover photo and a high-resolution profile picture. These features are granted to every user but if you are bothered by advertisements, you can opt for an AdFree account at $49.99 per year. And if 1TB just isn't enough for your needs, a Doublr account will provide you with 2TB for an annual fee of $499.99.
The free Flickr smartphone app has also been updated, and is now available from the Google Play Store (requires Android 2.3.3 or higher).

Swann Galleries have launched a social media project that reaches out to the global photography community of collectors, curators, dealers, critics, photographers and enthusiasts. The new blog, called Photophilia, is hosted on tumblr and offers a fully interactive platform for sharing your favourite photos along with a few lines of text explaining why you love them. More than 25 users have posted their beloved images so far, with works by well-known photographers such as Herb Ritts, Alfred Stieglitz, and Irving Penn. For those unfamiliar with web publishing tools, Swann offers a more old-fashioned way to take part in the project. They have produced a limited-edition series of postcards (pictured) with sample images that come in sets of five and are accompanied by a response card with room for a description of a favourite photograph.

Under its brand new business model / compensation plan, photographers will receive a 50% royalty on each transaction and 100% on extended licenses; what’s more, 90% of all pro?ts will be divided among members at year’s end. Photographers who are accepted into the cooperative also receive equity and have a real say in how the business is operated. “We wanted to create a marketplace for photographers that was not only democratic, but fair and sustainable,” Livingstone says. “There’s no reason these artists shouldn’t be able to earn a living from what they produce.”
