Photographer and writer Dan Suzio has won a gold award from the North American Travel Journalists Association for his book Death Valley Photographer’s Guide: Where and how to get the best shots. The book is generously illustrated with the author’s photographs, each one captioned with camera, lens, exposure, and other information about how it was made. Arthur Tress: San Francisco 1964 is a monograph by James A. Ganz, which presents for the first time a collection of newly discovered pictures Tress took in 1964 as a young man. The photographs reveal a theme familiar to Tress’s many fans: the intersection of the absurd and the mundane. Formally posed portraits on the streets of San Francisco as well as candid views of shop windows, signs and other idiosyncrasies of the local landscape capture the vibrant scene in the Bay Area at the dawn of a chaotic era. An introductory essay discusses the historical context of the works while an interview with Tress illuminates the making and rediscovery of these brilliant images. Shaped by War is the largest ever UK exhibition about the life and work of one of the world’s most acclaimed photographers, Don McCullin. On show at IWM London until 15 April 2012, the exhibition brings together McCullin’s frontline work from conflicts all over the world including the confrontation between East and West Berlin, Vietnam and Cambodia, the conflicts of the Middle East and the intense human suffering in Biafra and Bangladesh. These are displayed alongside McCullin’s photographs of more recent conflicts such as the Gulf War and the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. The exhibition is accompanied by a book, Don McCullin: Shaped by War, published by Jonathan Cape in association with IWM. The 208-page hardback has an RRP of £25.

Published by Steidl, Chromes is an edit of more than 5,000 Kodachromes and Ektachromes taken from ten chronologically ordered binders found in a safe in the Eggleston Artistc Trust. “This book presents Eggleston’s early Memphis imagery, his testing of colour and compositional strategies, and the development towards the ‘poetic snapshot’,” the publisher says. “In short, Chromes shows a master in the making.” To be released in December, this set of three clothbound books - priced at £220 / €248 / $345 - showcases 364 colour photographs on a total of 728 pages.

Behind Photographs – Archiving Photographic Legends is a new book by world-renowned photographer Tim Mantoani. Successfully funded through a Kickstarter project, the book is Mantoani’s personal mission to introduce the world to the photographers behind some of the world’s most quintessential images. Using the rare and mammoth format of 20X24 Polaroid, Mantoani documented these photographers holding one of their favorite or most iconic photographs.Featured photographers include legendary rock photographer Jim Marshall holding a photograph of the late Johnny Cash during his legendary concert at San Quentin Prison, Neil Leifer posing with his famous shot of Muhammad Ali standing and gesturing over a knocked out Sonny Liston, Harry Benson with his epic photo of The Beatles having a pillow fight and Steve McCurry’s famed portrait of the Afghan Girl from the cover of National Geographic. At the bottom of each Polaroid, the photographer has been asked to comment about their image in their own penmanship. Published by ChannelPhotographics, the book is available for $60. There is also a limited-edition version, which includes a set of nine 8"x12” individual prints ($295).
