The Guardian has launched the inaugural GuardianWitness awards. These awards aim to celebrate outstanding contributions - photos, videos and stories - by Guardian users through the GuardianWitness app and desktop site. A panel of judges, comprising Guardian and Observer editors and other key figures in media, science and technology, will assess submissions in eleven categories. All content submitted via GuardianWitness on or before 20 January 2014 will be eligible for consideration in the awards. Further information about GuardianWitness is available at the website below.

On 15th February, an exhibition of exquisite images from International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) awards will be unveiled at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The exhibition, which is located in the Nash Conservatory, runs until 30th March. Entry to the exhibition is included in the entry ticket to the gardens. The book, International Garden Photographer of the Year: Collection 7, will also be on sale in the Kew shop. The 2014 competition, which has a total cash prize fund of £13,000; also opens on 15th February.

The Fujifilm 2014 Student Awards are now open for entries. Once again, the Award is a collaboration between Fujifilm Professional, Metroprint, the online arm of Metro Imaging and ChooseFilm, the online community dedicated to film photography. In addition to being named Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2013 the winner will also be presented with £200 worth of film from Fujifilm, a professionally produced folio of prints and a one-to-one printing/consultancy session with one of Metroprint's top printers. There is an open brief for 2014, a move organisers hope will lead to a surge of creative submissions. The closing date for submissions is 31st March.

Fiipe Brandao from Portugal has won the 2013 ZeissImages.com contest with his photo, Bengula Blues: Couch Surfing (above). This years theme was "Ordinary Life" and the jury thought Filipe's image captured it best. "The photograph portrays a moment in our daily life which many of us have surely experienced on numerous occasions," says Jorge Torralba, the mastermind behind the ZeissImages.com website. "The pose and expression on the subjects face shows us a natural moment of apathy toward what we presume to be a television. The photographer captured this moment at the right time." The Photographic Museum of Humanity (PMH) has issued the call for entries for the 2014 PMH Grant, an international photography contest offering $4000 in cash prizes. The jury features Alec Soth (Magnum Photos), Iata Cannabrave (Brzilian curator, creator of the Latin American Photography Forum of Sao Paulo), Olivier Laurent (Associate Editor for the British Journal of Photography) and Diana Markosian (PMH 2013 Grant New Generation Prize winner). The winners of this year's Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) prize have been revealed. The top prize – the Cutty Sark Award for the Travel Photographer of the Year 2013 – goes to British photographer Timothy Allen for his B&W images of the mud mosque replastering festival and Dogon life in Mali, and his studies of individuals in Wales and Bhutan. The Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2013 is 14 year old Jonathan Rystrøm from Denmark, while the 14 and Under Young TPOTY category was won by 10 year-old Patria Prasaysa from Indonesia.
