Adorama today announced the Grand Prize winner of its first annual iPhone Photography Contest. The Grand Prize winning entry titled “So Long & Farewell” was created by Neville Black using an iPhone and three different imaging apps to edit the image. “Based on the success of this iPhone Photo Contest, Adorama is now planning additional contests to include the larger photographic community who are working with other mobile platforms such as the Google Android,” said Brian Green, Vice President of Marketing, Adorama.

Lloyds TSB has just launched the Weather Photographer of the Year competition in the UK, with a top prize of £10,000. Running until 30 September 2010, the Lloyds TSB Insurance Weather Photographer of the Year will culminate in a public exhibition in London where the finalists’ entries will be on show ahead of the winner being announced in November. The public will have the opportunity to vote on their favourite pictures online, with £100 going to the most popular photo uploaded each week. Dominion Riverrock has announced that registration is open for this year’s Digital Photo Contest. The second annual Dominon Riverrock sports and river life festival will be held from 14-15 May in Richmond, Virginia, and photographers are encouraged to capture the activities, competitions and venues taking place there. Entrants must submit their five best images as jpeg files via email by midnight Sunday, 16 May.A panel of judges will be looking for the overall images that capture the spirit of Dominion Riverrock. Cash prizes beginning at $500 will be awarded to first, second and third place contestants. The winning photos will also be featured in SBQ Magazine and displayed on the Dominion Riverrock website. There is a registration fee - $10 for online registrations made until 12 May, and $15 for on-site registrations made until 6pm on Saturday, 15 May.

The Master Photographers Association (MPA) has launched the UK’s largest prize for baby photography, a cash prize of £10,000. The prize will be awarded to the consumer with the ‘Cherub of the Year’ bonniest baby. Established in 1993, Cherubs is the UK’s longest running baby photography programme and has over 200 professional photographer partners covering postcode areas in the majority of the UK. Hasselblad and DRS are sponsoring a photo competition called “SCREENings Internet Goes Print” in Berlin, Germany. The aim of the contest is to provide photographers with an uncomplicated, yet effective, means of contacting industry insiders and important decision makers in the photography sector. To enter, photographers need to provide a link to their online portfolio using the form at the competition website. Entries are judged on the basis of photography and creativity rather than website design and implementation. Guilherme Junior, a Brazilian photographer, is the winner of the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards’ Campaign Award. The winning image, entitled ‘Twisters’, shows the supporters of the Flamengo soccer team in Rio de Janeiro. Delly Carr, one of the world’s leading sports photographers, and chair of the judging panel commented: “This female fan epitomises football’s energy and passion. She is singled out from the rest of the crowd through her ‘over-the-top’ celebratory jump, and therefore as one with the team. She has channelled all her energy into that explosive reaction. Her face is pure joy.” A selection of shortlisted images entered to the competition, including the Guilherme’s winning shot (reproduced above), will be exhibited in Cannes, April 2010.

Tamron USA has announced the second in its series of four photo contests for 2010: Backyard Wildlife. This quarter’s contest asks entrants to submit photographic portraits of their local wildlife, whether found in their own backyard, local parks, or other urban and rural neighbourhood areas. Running from 1 April to 30 June 2010, the contest is looking for local wildlife indigenous to the photographer’s home town, so photos from zoos, aquariums and the like will not be considered. Unified Color Technologies today announced the Unified Color “True Vision HDR Photo Contest.” U.S. photographers of all experience levels are invited to submit their finest images created using Unified Color Technology’s HDR PhotoStudio software, a free download available at Unified Color’s website. Images can be submitted in one of three categories: nature, architecture or “freestyle,” an open category for any image that does not qualify for either of the other categories.Awards and prizes will be presented in each category three times throughout the year followed by a grand prize announced on 1 December. The first round of awards will be announced in mid-May and entries should be submitted by 12 May. The three category winners will each receive a photo prize pack valuing nearly $2,000 including a Nikon D90 kit, Gitzo carbon fibre tripod, the new Lowepro Slingshot 202 AW and a Lexar Professional Class 10 8GB SDHC memory card. Sophie Ristelhueber has been awarded the 2010 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize for her retrospective Sophie Ristelhueber at the Jeu de Paume, Paris. The £30,000 prize is awarded to a photographer of any nationality for their significant contribution to the medium of photography through either an exhibition or publication, in Europe, between 1 October 2008 and 30 September 2009. Sophie Ristelhueber was chosen by the Jury members, Oliva Maria Rubio (Director of Exhibitions, La Fàbrica, Spain); Gilane Tawadros (Chief Executive, Design and Artists Copyright Society, curator and writer, UK); James Welling (artist, USA); and Anne-Marie Beckmann (Curator, Art Collection Deutsche Börse, Germany). Sony today announced the amateur category winners of the Sony World Photography Awards. Out of 43,745 amateur submissions from 144 countries, nine winners have been chosen. Richard Brocken from the Netherlands won in the Portraiture category with his image entitled Eva (see above). Other category winners include Marianna Marcantonini (Architecture), Jake Lowe (Conceptual & Constructed), Fredrik Jalhed (Documentary), Alex Chebotar (Fashion), Hayri Kodal (Landscape), Vitali Seitz (Music), Alex Goh (Natural History) and Maksym Gorbatskyi (Sport). The amateur category winners will be showcased at the Winners’ Exhibition as part of the World Photography Festival, a five day celebration of the craft of photography held in Cannes from 22-27 April. All the winning and shortlisted amateur images can be viewed at the Sony World Photography Awards 2010 website.

The winners of the Britain iS competition, launched by iStockphoto and the Guardian, have been announced. The overall winner is Aaron Yeandle (pictured) whose entry, “Western Ranger”, has been appraised as “a great representation of a British child play acting as a US cultural icon in a back-alley of a midland city” by Guardian Picture Editor, Roger Tooth. Best landscape went to Glen Humphries’ scene of Saltburn Beach in North Yorkshire; best urban to Luca di Fillipo’s summer scene of London’s Southbank; and best stock went to Chris Rutter’s dramatic tree shot. Forty-nine photo editors from respected picture-desks in twenty-six different countries will judge the Red Bull Illume competition this year. 4,337 photographers from 112 countries registered to the competition website and 22,764 images were submitted to the competition before the February 28 deadline. This is more than three times the amount entered into the 2007 Image Quest. The jury has the challenging task of selecting the best 50 images from 10 categories.
