Photographer and artist, Sylvia Grace Borda, has created the first explorative artworks in Google Street view in partnership with John M. Lynch. Entitled 'Farm Tableaux', the series captures farmers in Surrey, B.C. (Canada) enacting a routine activity, but unlike conventionally staged photographs, the observer can explore these framed compositions within an interactive Google Street View landscape. These choreographed scenes enable notions of expanded cinema to be encountered by the online viewer. Click through / scroll down for links to some of Borda's completed artworks.

Nikon has launched a teaser campaign for a new camera, entitled "Nikon - Pure Photography." The first element of the campaign is a 34-second movie featuring a photographer who says, "It's in my hands again," which - together with the "Pure Photography" tagline - might allude to a retro-styled, fully manual digital camera. There is no close-up of the camera itself but one of the sound effects you can hear is reminiscent of a - rather quiet - shutter going off. You can view the video after the jump.

AppCam today announced that it had acquired the rights for Virtual Grid, a new technology which makes it possible to replace the mechanical dials of digital cameras with sensory optimised, virtual dials directly on the touchscreen. The term "sensory optimised" means that a 3D line pattern is pressed into the glass screen above the touchscreen field which gives the fingertips a sensory feedback. This feedback, in conjunction with acoustic clicks, allows the user to handle the camera as accurately and reliably as with a mechanical dial. With the Virtual Grid technology it is now possible to replace these dials more than adequately with a touchscreen solution, clearing one of the major obstacles from the introduction of the AppCam Control System for digital cameras.

The Sinar rePro RC is a unique camera designed specifically for high-end digital reprography. Conveniently remote controlled (hence the RC designation), the Sinar rePro RC has a high-quality stepper motor with two speed levels which correspond to a coarse and a fine focus adjustment. The camera allows for a lateral shift of the image plane, which eliminates reflections. An auxiliary device called the Sinar Parallel enables the camera to be aligned perfectly with the subject, which is a prerequisite for correctly photographing flat art. "The battery powered Sinar Parallel is placed on the capturing table and its laser beam reflects from a mirror on the camera," the company says. "Precise alignment of the camera is achieved when the laser beam exactly hits the middle of the crosshairs of Sinar Parallel." Pricing and availability to be confirmed.

The Institute of Optics and Electronics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed a camera with a 100-megapixel square-format sensor. Apparently, the IOE3-Kanban is not designed to compete with high-resolution medium-format digital backs such as the Leaf Credo 80 or the Phase One IQ280 - its main areas of use include areial photography, disaster monitoring and high-dynamic-range imaging. The device, which takes 10240x10240-pixel photographs, can be used in temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +55 °C.

Fujifilm and Panasonic have developed a new organic CMOS image sensor technology that promises better dynamic range and higher light sensitivity. The new technology uses an organic photoelectric conversion layer with a photoelectric conversion property at the light receiving section of an image sensor to achieve performance beyond that of conventional image sensors. The transistors and metal interconnects in each pixel, fabricated using Panasonic's semiconductor device technology, are coated with a photoelectric conversion layer developed using Fujifilm's organic material technology. This boosts sensor sensitivity by 1.2 times compared to conventional sensors to deliver clean images even in low light. The thin film, achieved with the organic CMOS image sensor technology, has enabled the expansion of the range of incident angles to 60 degrees, efficiently utilizing light entering at an angle for faithful color reproduction with no colour mixing. The improved signal saturation value, combined with a newly developed noise-cancelling circuit, has resulted in what the two companies call "the industry's highest dynamic range," preventing highlight clipping in bright scenes.

Once again, Leica has revealed a little more about the upcoming Leica Mini M via its Facebook fan page. If the teaser graphic is anything to go by, the Leica Mini M will not have an integrated eye-level viewfinder, but it may have some traditional controls. (Of course there is still a possibility that the actual product will look entirely different - as you can see in the picture above, there is a speech balloon with the text, "Heard the rumours? Get the truth: Leica Stores - June 11th.")
