Rob Galbraith has tested the 4Gb Microdrive from Hitachi. The 4Gb Microdrive is relatively cheap compared to other similar storage options, selling for around $499.

“the Microdrive, at any capacity, is no longer universally quicker than competing flash memory CompactFlash cards, as it was in the early days. Durability should be improved, thanks to smart design changes in the latest generation of Microdrive. But again, flash memory Compactflash should still be able to better withstand the jolts typical of on-the-go photography.

What’s left for the Microdrive to really call its own? Price.”

Perhaps not the most interesting review that you will ever read, but if your camera relies on AA sized batteries, then you should take a look at Photo-i’s review. Vincent Oliver has taken a look at the latest 2100 and 2300 NiMH batteries from Uniross and a BatteryLogic Ultra Fast Charger.

“I tested two fully charged Uniross 2100 batteries on a Microtek S1 digital camera and after 220 shots the two batteries showed no sign of losing power. The batteries were recharged, I then ran a model train around a track, the train uses a single AA size battery and it ran continuously for 1hr 12minutes before grinding to a standstill. The same train with a fresh Duracell battery ran for 45 minutes.”

Foveon Introduces Newly Improved 10.2 Mp Direct Image Sensor
SIGMA SD10 digital camera the first to incorporate improved Foveon image sensor

Santa Clara, CA (October 27, 2003) - Foveon Inc., a technology leader in high-quality digital photography, announces the immediate availability of the F7X3-C9110, an enhanced version of the Foveon X3? PRO 10M direct image sensor. The improved 10.2 megapixel (red + green + blue pixels) image sensor doubles the sensitivity and maximum exposure times and offers increased dynamic range over its predecessor. The new Foveon sensor is used in the Sigma SD10 digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. The new Foveon X3? PRO 10M direct image sensor will allow users to capture outstanding photographs at higher shutter speeds ideal for sports action as well as in low light situations requiring long exposures up to 30 seconds.

The new Foveon image sensor is a result of design and fabrication process improvements that result in higher image quality and superb color fidelity. “These improvements demonstrate the speed at which we are evolving the technology and support our confidence that X3 is the most advanced image sensor technology for capturing color images,” said Federico Faggin, Foveon’s CEO.

The first camera to incorporate the new image sensor is the Sigma SD10 digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. The camera supports an ISO range from 100 to 800, plus an extended mode option to ISO 1600, and exposure durations of up to 30 seconds.

“The choice of image sensor is becoming a top criterion, when choosing a digital camera, because it is the primary factor that determines the image quality. We believe that with Foveon X3 technology, the Sigma SD10 digital camera offers color resolution and color fidelity comparable to other cameras costing four times the price,” said Faggin.

The Foveon X3 PRO 10M direct image sensor has a total of 10.2 million red, green, and blue pixels that are organized into three layers (2268 x 1512 x 3 layers).

Foveon Enhances Digital Images With X3 Fill Light
New technology easily corrects lighting problems in digital photos

Santa Clara, CA (October 27, 2003) - Foveon, Inc., a technology leader in high-quality digital image capture, today announced the release of X3 Fill Light, a powerful new technology that dramatically improves the quality of digital images affected by difficult lighting conditions. The technology is incorporated as a new software feature in the Sigma Photo Pro 2.0 application for the Sigma SD10 digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) camera.

The X3 Fill Light feature simulates the photographic method of “dodging and burning” adding extra light to shadow regions, while preserving highlight detail. It is a powerful method for simultaneously adjusting overexposed and underexposed areas of a digital image with a single simple control. The feature is bundled exclusively with the new Sigma SD10 digital SLR (Single-Lens Reflex) camera, which uses a Foveon X3 direct image sensor.

X3 Fill Light is designed for images taken under lighting conditions such as indoor-outdoor scenes, backlit portraits, or scenes with mixed lighting. Use of the X3 Fill Light feature creates natural-looking images that can be faithfully reproduced in a print.

“Challenging lighting conditions, such as backlighting from a window or subjects in front of snow, can result in disappointing images. The X3 Fill Light technology allows photographers to make excellent prints from poorly exposed images which otherwise would have been discarded due to poor lighting and exposure.” said Eric Zarakov, Foveon’s vice president of marketing.

X3 Fill Light is implemented as a simple slider interface that allows the user to control the amount of correction. By increasing the amount of X3 Fill Light, the brightness and contrast of the shadow regions are increased to add visibility into areas that have been underexposed. Simultaneously, the contrast in highlight regions is automatically increased and the brightness is adjusted to avoid saturation.

The Sigma Photo Pro 2.0 software, incorporating Foveon’s X3 Fill Light, is shipping with the Sigma SD10 digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) camera from Sigma Corporation (www.sigma-photo.co.jp).

Philips will demonstrate its new dual-layer DVD recordable technology at the DVD+RW Alliance booth at the CEATEC* JAPAN 2003 exhibition in Makuhari (Chiba, Japan) from October 7 to 11. Developed by Philips Research in cooperation with MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media)/Verbatim, the technology virtually doubles data storage capacity on DVD recordable discs from 4.7 Gbyte to 8.5 Gbyte while remaining compatible with existing DVD Video players and DVD-ROM drives.

Both Philips and MKM regard the introduction of dual-layer DVD+R technology as the next important milestone in the drive to continually improve and expand the optical data storage options available to consumers. Users will benefit from the additional storage capacity of the DVD+R disc as it will enable them to record 4 hours of DVD-quality video or 16 hours of VHS-quality video, without the need to turn over the disc. Delkin eFilm PRO CardBus 32-bit PCMCIA adapterDelkin Press Release 07/10/03

Poway CA,  October?7, 2003 Delkin Devices Inc.,  maker of premium quality eFilm memory cards and other innovative products for camera stores worldwide, has introduced the fastest PCMCIA Adapter on the market. The eFilm PRO CardBus 32-bit PCMCIA adapter is four to six times faster than all current conventional 16-bit adapters and ushers in a new phase of adapter performance. PCMCIA adapters have long been popular for their convenient size and ease of use for quick file transfers form memory cards to laptop computers.? The eFilm PRO CardBus 32 is the only adapter that achieves maximum speeds from the popular high-speed professional grade CompactFlash (CF)  memory cards that are currently popular with high-end SLR digital cameras.  The CardBus 32 adapter allows CF memory cards to work in the PC Card slot on most Windows based laptops and uses the high speed CardBus PCMCIA standard.???

The new Delkin 32-bit CardBus adapter has the same size, shape and design as existing 16-bit adapters in common use now.? However, Delkin CardBus adapters and all CardBus products worldwide have a set of gold dimples or ?buttons? across the top of the leading edge, which inserts into the laptop.? These buttons serve a keying function and prevent the insertion of the adapter into non-CardBus compatible laptops.? CardBus slots are common on all modern laptops from manufacturers like Dell, Toshiba, Sony and many others.? The CardBus 32 adapter inserts completely within its host without any external cabling and operates at a power-saving 3.3 volts, extending battery life in most configurations.?

The CardBus standard,  while not well known to the general computing population, has been in place since 1997, and supported by virtually all notebook vendors since 1998.?  CardBus is standard on virtually all modern Windows and Mac OS systems.?  CardBus provides higher levels of performance than the 16-bit PC Card standard,  and is able to take advantage of internal bus speeds that can be four to six times faster.? Tests on Delkin eFilm PRO cards and other high-speed CF cards revealed similar speed increases of four to six times that of standard 16-bit CF adapters.? 100 Megabytes of JPEG photos on a Delkin PRO card were transferred to a Dell laptop with both a Delkin 16-bit adapter and the new CardBus 32 adapter. The CardBus adapter took 18 seconds (5.5MB/s) to transfer the images and the standard adapter took more than four times as long, taking one minute, 26 seconds (1.16MB/s) to transfer.

The Delkin CardBus 32 adapter has a theoretical maximum speed of 132MB/s.? Speed in real world applications is determined by the speed of the CPU and flash chips within the CF card.? High-speed cards like the Delkin eFilm PRO and the IBM Microdrive will operate much faster than other cards not designed to be high speed.?  Delkin CardBus 32 adapters also utilize a patented chip, which reduces the burden on the host CPU to 10% or less, further increasing the value of this product.? The Delkin CardBus 32 adapter is currently shipping with a retail price of $59.99.? The Delkin CardBus adapter is available from independent photo stores worldwide and www.Delkin.com.

Patrick Maher, chief operating officer and executive director for PCMCIA, recently said in a PCMCIA press release, “CardBus technology provides significant improvements in peripheral device performance without sacrificing ease-of-use or mobility the industry has come to expect from PC Cards.” The Delkin CardBus 32 adapter is currently compatible with most Windows OS systems, and a driver CD is included with each adapter for Windows 98, 98SE, Me, 2000 and XP.? Delkin expects to have Apple drivers available by January 2004, as most Apple laptops also support CardBus.? For the latest information on CardBus and other PC Card products,  visit the PCMCIA web site at http://www.pc-card.com. ??For the latest information on Delkin, CardBus 32 adapters and many other cards,  accessories and digital photography in general, visit http://www.delkin.com.

Bo Atkins at Photo.net has published a new article about portable storage devices, focusing on reviewing the Tripper device:

“One of the first things you realize once you’ve bought your digital camera is that you need some way to store the images. The memory card in the camera is fine, but it can only store so much data. It can be enough for a day’s outing, but what about a 2 week vacation?

Today’s 6MP DSLRs create JPEG files which are typically 2-3MB in size, or if you shoot RAW images which give the the best possible quality, file sizes can range from 6-8MB depending if you embed a JPEG in with the RAW file. This means that you may only get 56 images on a 512MB memory card if you are shooting RAW images with high quality embedded JPEGs. Even just shooting straight high quality JPEGs, you’ll only get about 170 images on a 512MB card.”
