DPReview are reporting today that Foveon have released specifications for a new variant of their X3 sensor, until now only used in the Sigma SD-9 DSLR. The new sensor is 1/1.8” in size, which is the most commonly used sensor size in today’s compact digital cameras.
“The Foveon X3 5M is a 1/1.8-inch CMOS image sensor that incorporates the breakthrough Foveon X3 technology. Foveon X3 image sensors capture full-measured color images through a unique three-layer pixel sensor design. By capturing fullmeasured color images, the need for color interpolation and artifact-reducing blur filters is eliminated. As a result, the Foveon X3 5M delivers the highest effective resolution possible without color artifacts for the 1/1.8-inch optical format.”

PhotographyBLOG reader Mike Strock has reminded me that Lexar have started shipping a 4Gb compact flash card. Retailing at $1,499 and capable of storing around 600 RAW files froma digital SLR like the Canon EOS 10D, this card is aimed firmly at the professional photographer. Here’s an eye-opening quote from Gizmodo.com:
“Four gigabytes is enough to store as many as 45,000 JPEGs, which is probably more photographs than the average person will take in their entire lifetime.”

ePhotoZine have also reviewed the X’S Drive II from Vosonic, a neat and inexpensive backup device for your digital images. I own the original version, which isn’t all that different to this new model, and have been using it without any problems for the last 4 months.
”...a multitude of devices are appearing that allow you to backup your memory card to a CD or hard-disk whilst on the move. The Vosonic X’S-Drive II we’re looking at here uses a hard-disk, in this case a 20Gb one, although it is available with larger drives. It uses a fast USB 2.0 interface and at a glance offers a quick and simple method of backing up our memory cards.”

Digital Camera Resource has posted some larger sample images from Sony’s new 4-colour filter CCD, which was announced on Wednesday. Website: DCRP - Sony CCD Samples
Sony today announced a new 4-colour filter CCD, which will be used in new consumer Sony digital cameras in the “near future”. The CCD features an Emerald sensor in addition to the traditional Red-Green-Blue sensors, which Sony claims will produce more realistic images.
Here’s the full Press Release with all the details:
”Realization of natural color reproduction in Digital Still Cameras, closer to the natural sight perception of the human eye
Technology development to realize 4-color filter CCD and New Image Processor, achieving halving of color reproduction error
(Tokyo, Japan) - Sony Corporation today announced the world’s first practical consumer (home) use of CCD with 4-color (Red , Green , Blue + Emerald ) filters, together with a new image processor corresponding to the 4-color filter. By this technology, the color reproduction error is halved compared to Sony’s conventional 3-primary-color filter CCD and, expression of images closer to the natural sight perception of the human eye is achieved under various shooting conditions.
Conventional digital still cameras mainly use 3-primary-color filter CCD, and the colors are recorded by the intensity of each of the 3 colors, Red(R), Green(G) and Blue(B), corresponding to the color reproduction characteristics of the color TV or monitors. However, the characteristics of these CCD filters are different from those of the human visual system. Color differences therefore emerge compared to natural human sight, resulting in different color reproduction.
In the 4-color filter CCD, a filter with the Emerald (E) color is added to the conventional 3-color RGB filter, in order to reduce the color reproduction errors and to record natural images closer to the natural sight perception of the human eye. As a result, the characteristics of the CCD color filter become much closer to those of the human visual system, achieving dramatic reduction in the color reproduction error.
In addition to the development of the 4 color filter, a new image processor corresponding to the 4-color filter has been developed. With this processor, each of the signals captured by the 4 colors is processed to produce ideal 3 colors close to the natural sight perception the human eye by a matrix calculation. Also, in addition to functioning with 30% less power consumption, by the efficient processor management, functions such as high-speed image shooting and high-speed playback are realized, as well as enhancing the of overall basic functions of digital still cameras.
By the combination of the 4 color filter CCD and the new processor, color reproduction errors have been minimized by half, and the reproduction of blue-green and red colors has been particularly enhanced.
Sony plans to integrate the newly developed 4 color filter CCD and the new image processor into the new digital cameras which will be introduced in the near future. This unique Sony original technology will offer the capability to shoot images with enhanced reality.
Sony will continue to further improve the technology in order to enhance image quality in the growing digital still camera market, with the aim of offering customers more fun and joy in taking pictures.”

The latest of Digital Outback Photo’s technical series of articles, Digital Photography Essentials #004, looks at the subject of “Noise”, with a comparison between film and digital noise.
“Noise in digital cameras can be defined as anything visible in the captured image that was not present in the scene. However, in this discussion we will exclude highly structured image problems such as radial patterns or artifacts and concentrate on the more random noise sources.”

Steve’s Digicams have also reviewed the Lexar Multi-Card Reader, which is a high speed USB 2.0 device that supports 8 different types of memory cards.
“Once you have used a USB 2.0 card reader you’ll never want to go back to the slow USB 1.1 speeds again. You may not have noticed a lot of difference when you upgraded from a Pentium 1.2GHz to a Pentium 2.4GHz computer, but believe me, you’ll immediately notice the difference in transfer speed between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 card readers - even with the slower media types.”

Photoxels have just published an interesting and comprehensive article about noise; what is it, why does it happen, and how can you avoid it or remove it from your photographs.
“One of the major difference between a consumer digital camera and a digital Single Lens Reflex (dSLR) is that the former produces images with a lot of noise when using high ISOs and long exposure times, and the latter is practically noise-free.
Just what is noise and how can we eliminate or minimize it? This article tries to explain all of this in as a non-technical way as possible.”
