“Robustly built, comprehensively feature-packed and small enough to slip into a jacket pocket, the PowerShot G9 has a lot in its favour.  Because it offers many of the same shooting controls and supports raw file capture, it would make an excellent compact back-up camera for DSLR users. It would also provide some useful features that are not provided in DSLRs. You get good range of video formats (including widescreen) and facilities for adding sound bites to pictures or making audio recordings.”

“I was surprised to find that despite the obvious similarities between the L10 and L11, the latter has significantly better image quality. Whether the 6MP sensor simply suits the lens better, or some slight changes have been made to the lens for this model I do not know, but the L11 suffers from slightly less wide-angle barrel distortion, and the image is noticeably sharper right across the frame, with no trace of the slight chromatic aberration that I noticed on the L10.”

CNET have reviewed the Samsung NV11 camera, featuring a Schneider lens, Smart Touch user interface, 2.7 inch high definition LCD, 10 megapixels and 5x optical zoom lens.

“Thanks to relatively low noise at all but the highest sensitivity settings, the NV11’s photos look quite good. The camera reproduces colors rather well, and its two separate manual white balance settings offer flexibility when shooting between two nearby locations, like on a shady porch and in a sunny backyard. The photos aren’t perfect, though; the NV11 tends to blow out highlights, especially when using the camera’s onboard flash. We also noticed some minor processing artifacts creep up around fine details, such as textured fabrics.”

“Though its Smart Touch interface takes some getting used to, the Samsung NV10 is a nice compact camera. Its responsive shutter, manual controls, and attractive images make it a fine choice for casual photographers who want a lot of options without a lot of bulk. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, though, consider instead the Samsung NV11. The NV10’s bigger, slightly heavier brother boasts a more powerful zoom and both aperture- and shutter-priority modes, two much appreciated improvements over this model.”

Steves Digicams have reviewed the Sony Cyber-Shot S650, a new entry-level digital camera with 7.2 megapixels, 1/2.5 inch CCD, ISO 1000 and 3x optical zoom lens.

“The Cyber-Shot S650 fits well in your hand and can be easily tucked away in a pocket or purse. There are very few controls, but they are conveniently placed within reach of your fingertips. The S650 features a small 2.0-inch LCD, which I found a little hard to use. This is the only viewfinder on the camera, and I found the screen more or less impossible to see in bright sunlight. In marginal lighting, the display gains up nicely, making this digicam useful in low light conditions.”

A permanent pink ribbon adorns the face of the camera to signify General Imaging’s commitment to the fight against breast cancer. The GE H855 camera has 8 megapixels of resolution, a 3-inch LCD screen, 5x zoom and a 28-mm equivalent wide-angle lens.

Steves Digicams have reviewed the Canon PowerShot SD950 IS digital camera, which features a 12.1 megapixel sensor and 3.7x image stabilised lens.

“When shooting outdoors, the SD950 captures beautiful images with good exposure and rich colors, in both Large Fine and Large SuperFine modes. Images are also sharp, however, I did notice a bit of noise when shooting with an ISO of 200, but not enough to affect a printed photograph. Just keep in mind that as you increase the ISO you will also increase the noise in this photograph. Image quality was what I expected from a Canon model, excellent, with only slight barrel distortion and slight chromatic aberrations (purple fringing) on the edge of some light and dark areas.”

“Unfortunately, when the light isn’t perfect the M853 doesn’t do so well. It’s been a while since we encountered a camera that suffered from serious shutter lag, the bane of digital compacts in days gone by. But the M853 has a real problem in low light. Don’t expect any night-time action shots, because when the lights go down the autofocus takes its time hunting around and the shutter lag is noticeable.”

Megapixel.net have reviewed the new Pentax T30 compact digital camera, which features 7.1 megapixels, a 3 inch touch-screen LCD display, Face Recognition Auto Focus and Auto Exposure, plus a high ISO Digital Shake Reduction mode.

“Noise and compression combine to limit the size of prints that can be produced from the Optio T30’s images, as large size prints can reveal artefacts. Nevertheless, with its 7 megapixel CCD, the Pentax Optio T30 yields images that can be printed out to a 4 x 6 inch (10 x 15 cm) size without any difficulty. The colour saturation is well-suited to prints and, at such a standard size, images are quite detailed.”

“Picture quality is, on the whole, surprisingly good for a budget camera. Exposure, dynamic range and colour rendition are excellent, and the overall level of detail isn’t bad either. The lens quality is less than perfect, producing fairly massive barrel distortion at the wide end of the zoom range, and some chromatic aberration as well. It could also be a bit sharper. Another surprise is noise control, which is pretty good. Although there is some colour noise visible at ISO 200, image quality remains good up to ISO 800, although it does break down quite badly at ISO 1200 and 1600, with image noise and visible banding.”

The Pentax A40 is a new compact digital camera offering 12 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD monitor and 3x optical zoom lens. The Pentax A40 features three types of Shake Reduction including mechanical, digital and movie. The A40 also offers new Face Recognition technology including a Natural Skin Tone mode and a Half-length Portrait mode, which automatically takes a head and shoulder photograph of subjects. The Pentax A40 will ship in October 2007 for US $299.95.

The BenQ X735 is a 7 megapixel digital camera with a 3x zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD display. The BenQ X735’s face tracking function automatically detects and tracks up to nine human faces. 29 different scene modes are on offer, including manual mode, S.S.F (Super Shake Free) mode, portrait mode and night scene mode. Video can be recorded with optical zoom in MPEG 4 format at 640 x 480 at 30 fps. Available in red and black, the BenQ X735 will be available in Latin America, Europe and Asia Pacific starting early October.

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Casio EX-V8, which offers a a 7x optical zoom and 8.1 megapixels plus a YouTube video mode.

“The 7x optical zoom market isn’t too competitive, with the main competition between Casio, Pentax, and Samsung. For the hefty price of $329.99, the Casio V8 is one of the most expensive of the 7x optical zoom bunch. Most of that money goes to the Casio’s advanced functions for video, mechanical, and optical image stabilization, which makes it a strong competitor, but consumers might want to avoid having to fork over their wallets while less expensive 7x zoom cameras sit on the same shelf. “

DigiCamReview have just reviewed the 7.2 megapixel Casio EX-Z77 camera, which features a special YouTube mode that saves movies at the optimum size, quality and other settings.

“The camera has quite rich, saturated colours, with good contrast and I was pleased with how the camera captured colour with warm tones and pleasing skin tones. There was fairly good detail (although some areas seemed soft), and the camera took a number of pleasing images outside, but areas with huge variation in brightness do show signs of ‘bleeding’ and purple fringes. In general ‘normal’ quality jpeg artefacts are not easily seen, however areas with strong contrasts benefit from use of the highest quality setting.”

“Our image quality results were very similar to the SD850, which is not surprising as they use the same image sensor. Our outdoor samples were very pleasing, showing good exposure, especially sky detail, and colors look very natural. Image noise is average for a consumer model, just remember it will become more noticeable in your photos as you increase the sensitivity.”

“Of course the crucial factor for any camera, especially one with a radical new lens, is image quality, and here the verdict is, I’m afraid, not good. The lens lacks sharpness and fine detail, as well as producing significan distortion at wide angle, and the tiny 1/2.5-in sensor lacks dynamic range and colour depth. As well as this there are severe image noise problems at all ISO settings from 100 upwards. The Z10 has a maximum ISO setting of 3200 but I have no idea why, since images at this setting are so noisy as to be utterly useless.”

CNET have reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix Z5fd, the first in its range of ‘Z’ series cameras to feature hardware-based Face Detection technology.

“Though its photos can be pretty good, the Z5fd performs inconsistently. On one hand, I see no lens distortion or focus problems, nary a compression artifact and only the occasional case of purple fringing. Photos look relatively sharp and white balance reasonably neutral. If you want that typical vivid snapshot appearance, you’ll have to switch into Chrome (as in slide film) color mode, because the standard mode looks a little flat relative to most point-and-shoot models.”

“While the Stylus 790 SW is far from perfect, it’s one of the few cameras on the market, especially in this price range, that can take a beating and actually operate under water or at the top of a ski resort without worry. If you need a camera that can face up to those challenges, then the 790 SW makes sense. If not, you’re probably better off with a regular compact camera that can perform faster and give you better image quality.”

The Canon G9 offers more megapixels than its predecessor, the G7, which on paper suggests it will have better resolution but more noise and worse dynamic range. Our tests prove the G9 has significantly better resolution, better than most cameras released this year. Noise levels are high, but not any higher than the G7, which is commendable. Color accuracy is fantastic, as is the Movie mode, both of which have become consistent successes for high-end Canon PowerShots.”
