Sigma DP1PMA 2007: Further details of the Sigma DP1, 28mm fixed lens compact digital camera have been announced, and the camera was on display at PMA. Apparently the DP1 has a tentative launch date of Spring 2007, or May/June this year. I’ve published 9 Sigma DP1 photos from the show, which will feature an ISO range of 100-1600 and has an innovative thumb-operated dial for quick manual focusing (shown in the pictures). The matt black buttons of the original DP1 prototype have been replaced by shiny silver versions - I preferred the more sober originals.

Update: I’ve added some photos of the Sigma DP1 with the optional viewfinder attachment, which fits into the flash hotshoe on top of the camera. There’s also a dedicated flashgun with a guide number of 16 (the built-in unit is 6), and apparently you could fit the much larger SD14 flashgun onto the DP1 if you so wished. Availability will be the end of May, with price to be confirmed.

KodakPMA 2007: 4 new Kodak digital cameras have been announced at PMA - the Z712, Z885, C763 and C613. The Kodak Z885 looked the most interesting, with a 5x optical zoom, 8 megapixels and the headline-grabbing ISO speed of 8000. Kodak showed me some 6x4 inch and 10x8 inch prints taken using ISO 8000. At the smaller print size they were roughly comparable to a good 3 megapixel cameraphone image, while the larger size was less acceptable as you’d expect, with obvious jaggies. The Z885 offers full manual control and is a nice size, but sadly there’s no RAW mode for the more discerning photographer.

Sony G1PMA 2007: The Sony G1 was the other new product that Sony announced at the show today. Unlike the Alpha DSLRs and lenses, the G1 camera is actually a real product. The Sony G1 features a huge 3.5 inch screen with 921,000 pixels and offers 2Gb of built-in storage (yes, 2Gbs!) and wi-fi connectivity, the first Sony camera to do so. On the downside, the Sony G1 only offers 6 megapixels and a 3x zoom lens, so may prove to be slightly disappointing on the image quality front.

Canon PowerShot A710 ISMegapixel.net have reviewed the new Canon PowerShot A710 IS digital camera.

“Just like the camera it evolved from, the PowerShot A710 IS provides good value for money. Priced the same as the A700 was a year ago, the A710 offers an image stabilizer and a lower sensitivity to noise in addition to a modest increase in resolution. This, combined with a high quality image, make the A710 IS an excellent and worthwhile upgrade.”

Samsung NV7DCResource have taken a look at the distinctive Samsung NV7 digital camera.

“The Samsung NV7 OPS is a camera that offers a lot of bang for the buck, but is ultimately a let down due to its below average image quality, poor battery life, and frustrating user interface. While I like its design and feature set quite a bit, the bottom line is that there are better cameras out there for the money.”

Kodak Easyshare V705Steves Digicams have reviewed the 7 megapixel, dual-lens Kodak Easyshare V705 camera.

“The V705’s image quality is quite good for a compact digital. Outdoor shots were well saturated with a bit of pin cushion distortion at full telephoto. Chromatic aberrations were well-controlled, with only a slight amount of purple fringing in high contrast areas. At low ISO settings images had little or no noise, and at high setting, (ISO 400 and above), noise can be found, however resolution can be set as high as 7.1-megapixel at speeds as high as ISO 1000.”

Canon SD900PCMagazine have published a review of the new 10 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD900 (also known as the Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti).

“One feature that did work very well was the SD900’s face-detection feature, which initially provides three squares on the LCD around the faces it detects. One of these boxes, a white square, indicates the subject on which the camera will focus. When the shutter is pressed halfway down to lock the focus, the LCD shows up to nine green squares to indicate the number of faces the camera can focus on.”

Fujifilm FinePix S9600DIWA member Photoxels have reviewed the new Fujifilm S9600 (called the FinePix S9100 in the USA), which is a 9 megapixel camera with a 10x zoom lens.

“The Fujifilm FinePix S9100 is a well-designed long zoom digital camera with excellent handling and fast operations. It has excellent proportions and successfully captures the DSLR-like handling. A couple of often-used features are still menu-bound and would gain much in practical usability if they were more directly accessible. All in all, a very well designed and thought-out digital camera which feels and handles as you would expect a professional digital camera to.”
