Olympus mju 700Buy-n-Shoot.com have reviewed the Olympus mju 700 (also known as the Olympus Stylus 710 in the USA), a 7.1 megapixel camera with 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD and a weatherproof body.

“Another feature worth mentioning is the anti-shake setting, found on the dial with a picture of a hand, with two lines either side of it signalling movement. This feature disables the ISO settings and works with the shutter and aperture controls, raising the ISO (film speed) setting in situations where there might be a chance that movement could be evident in the shot from a shaky hand, or low light. I found this to be a handy little addition but also noticed the camera shooting at the higher settings more often – increasing the chance of a grainier photo. But overall, a grainier image is far better than a blurred image which would otherwise be deleted from the camera.”

Fujifilm FinePix F30 ZoomDigital Trends have published their review of the Fujifilm FinePix F30, which offers ISO 3200, 6 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD.

“One of the real world improvements for this camera is a setting called Natural Light & Flash. With Natural Light the camera sets the ISO and takes a shot without a flash. In most instances this works well but sometimes it doesn’t because there’s just too much noise. With Natural Light & Flash, the camera takes two simultaneous shots—one with and one without a flash. Once you get home and see them a big screen, you can decide which one to print. Also new is the i-Flash that automatically adjusts to the scene rather than blasting the same amount of light for every subject. It worked nicely, especially with some indoor close-ups.”

Kodak Easyshare Z650Trusted Reviews have reviewed the Kodak Easyshare Z650, which has a 6.1-megapixel sensor and 10x zoom lens.

“Fortunately the Z650 does have one major strong point, and that is image quality. The Schneider Kreuznach lens is as usual superb, producing pin-sharp focus right across the frame, with virtually zero distortion at all focal lengths. The Kodak Colour Science processing engine does the rest, turning in gorgeous colour reproduction in every shot. The image files produced at the 6MP setting are around 0.8-1.5MB each (528 shots on a 1GB card) but even so there was very little JPEG artefacting. Image noise is also very well controlled. The Z650 has an ISO range of 80-400, but even at the highest setting there was very little noise.”

Sony Press Release

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 11—It’s easy to pocket your screen gems and dazzle audiences with the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T50 and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N2 digital cameras, featuring three-inch touch-screen displays and built-in slide show capability. The new models’ extra-large screens with intuitive menu options allow for less physical buttons on the camera bodies, resulting in a sleeker design. You can use your photos to craft dynamic, personal narratives with in-camera slide shows—complete with your own music and transition effects such as pans, wipes and fades. “With digital photography, the social interaction that happens when people share their pictures has become as important as making great photographs,” said Phil Lubell, director of marketing for digital still cameras and photo printers at Sony Electronics. “Large, durable, scratch-resistant touch screens with enhanced photo-viewing capabilities are a means to ensuring that photo buffs get the maximum enjoyment out of using their cameras.”

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ50DPReview have published their review of the recently announced 10 megapixel Panasonic DMC-FZ50 camera.

“If you look at the list of pros and cons above you’ll notice that the pros are mostly concerned with the camera and the cons are mostly concerned with the image, or more specifically the effect of noise and Venus III noise reduction. This sums up the FZ50 perfectly; a fantastic camera with a less than stellar sensor / processor, and way too many pixels.”

Sony Cybershot DSC-T30DigitalCameraInfo have just reviewed the Sony Cybershot DSC-T30, a 7.2 megapixel camera with a 3 inch LCD screen, image stabilisation and high sensitivity mode (ISO 1000) to help avoid blurry photos.

“It is easy to use, offering a selection of automatic modes, along with a High Sensitivity scene mode that boosts the ISO up to 1000 to capture pictures without the flash at places like night clubs where illumination is limited. The 3x optical zoom lens is good in both still and video recording modes, and Sony’s Super SteadyShot image stabilization system helps keep pictures crisp and video stable.”

Nikon Coolpix L4Imaging Resource have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L4, a 4 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom lens and 2 inch LCD.

“Compared to some competing entry-level models that take AA batteries the new Nikon Coolpix L4 has very limited manual control particularly when it comes to ISO light sensitivity adjustment. The L4 makes up for its lack of control, however, with a robust automatic feature set that’s helps make picture-taking easier for the entry-level shooter. Still, it’s not the fastest camera in its class, and the Nikon L4’s images are really only suitable for 5x7 or 4x6, due to significant noise in the images. Consider the price, and it’s not bad, but we saw much better performance from the L3, which seems to be the sweet spot in the L-series lineup.”

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1DIWA member LetsGoDigital have just reviewed the new 10x zoom, 5 megapixel, compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 digital camera.

“Although the Panasonic Lumix TZ1 did well in the test run and we really enjoyed having the MEGA O.I.S image stabilizer, we still see some challenges ahead for Panasonic. The noise ratio at ISO values of 400 and higher is still a stumbling block for this manufacturer. Looking at the competition, we can see that it is possible to get more out of the small CCD image sensors and to have less obvious noise than there was at 400 ISO and higher.”

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LX2Disgruntled owner Pavel Kudrys has started an online petition about the new 10 megapixel Panasonic LX2 and FZ50 digital cameras.

“The main aim of this petition is to “force” the Panasonic to release a firmware update for their very recent prosumer cameras FZ50 and LX2. This new firmware should allow the users to turn the in-camera Noise Reduction (and other picture adjustments, like contrast, saturation and sharpness) completely OFF. The current option to set the picture adjustments to LOW is not enough, because the VENUS III NR is simply too strong and kills many fine details and gives the JPEG output very smudgy and watercolor paint look.”

So far 160 people have agreed with Pavel and signed the petition. We’re in the middle of reviewing the DMC-FZ50 at the moment, so expect our comments on this “issue” soon…

Kodak Easyshare P712Steves Digicams have reviewed the 7 megapixel, 12x zoom Kodak Easyshare P712 digital camera.

“Shooting performance is very robust for a camera in this class. From power-on till the first image captured measures about 3.2 seconds. Shutter lag, the delay between depressing the shutter and capturing the image, measures less than less than 1/10 of a second when pre-focused, and only 2/10 of a second including autofocus. Shooting a sequence of JPEG/Fine or RAW images in single-shot mode yielded a shot to shot time of 1.4 seconds between frames; TIFF mode slowed to about 12.5 seconds. Flash images were captured at intervals of between 1.8 and 3 seconds, depending on the subject distance.”

Pentax Optio A10ThinkCamera have just reviewed the Pentax Optio A10, which features a shake reduction system, 8 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“The A10 was released before high sensitivity modes became the norm, and the camera only offers a maximum ISO of 400 (relying on its image stabilisation to compensate in low-light). Noise is a big issue however, and the images suffer from it at all levels apart from 50 at the bottom end of the scale. Despite the noise colours and detail are good and at low ISO very sharp.”

“As well as this, the overall image quality is very good, with excellent exposure and colour rendition especially in good light, and surprisingly good dynamic range for a 1/2.5” sensor.
