TrustedReviews have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5 camera.
“Focusing is also a little sluggish, although I have encountered slower AF systems. In good light and with a high-contrast subject it takes a good half a second to focus, giving a total shutter lag of almost a second. This might not sound like much, but it is definitely toward the slower end of the scale when compared to other current models. In low light it is even slower, but thanks to the AF illuminator it can focus in total darkness at a range of about two metres.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L4, a 4 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom lens and 2 inch LCD.
“The L4 is not what I would call a robust performer. Power up to first image captured measured 3 seconds, much of which is consumed by extending the lens. Shutter lag averaged 3/10 of a second when pre-focused, including about 1/10 second delay in the LCD viewfinder’s live image; autofocus shutter lag averaged 7/10 second. When shooting in single exposure mode, the shot to shot delay measured approx. 3 seconds between frames without use of the flash and between 5 and 9 seconds with the flash, depending on subject distance and battery condition. I also noticed that when using the camera’s red-eye reduction flash mode, the viewfinder blanks during the pre- flash, a critical period of just under one second.”

ePhotoZine have just reviewed the Ricoh GR Digital, an 8 megapixel compact digicam based on the GR Series of 35mm compact film cameras.
“For a compact digital camera, noise levels are quite commendable across throughout the range. The camera produces very clean images between ISO64 and ISO200. At ISO400 there is a slight increase in noise, but the levels similar to that found on most other compacts at ISO200. Things start to get a little messy at ISO800 and above, with high levels of chroma noise present at ISO1600, although both are still very usable due to the noise having a film-like pattern to it. Images taken at ISO1600 benefit from being converted to black & white, where they take on a similar appearance to high speed monochrome film.”

DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Canon PowerShot A620, which features a 7.1 megapixel sensor, 2 inch LCD screen and 4x optical zoom lens equivalent to 35–140 mm focal length.
“The A620 has big shoes to fill; the 4 megapixel A520 was Canon’s top seller of 2005. It provided bread-and-butter basics and manual functionality at a really good price. The Canon A620 adds a few more megapixels and a few more features; it comes with 7.1 megapixels and a 4x zoom lens, along with the My Colors picture effects mode and a slightly larger 2-inch LCD screen, which flips out from the camera body and rotates to just about any angle.”

DigiCamReview have published the first online review of the Olympus SP-320, a 7.1 megapixel camera with 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, full range of shooting modes and RAW format.
“Image quality is very good, the images have very good accurate colour, with good saturation, contrast and detail, with fairly low noise except for the higher ISO settings. Images were slightly soft straight from the camera and could benefit from sharpening. Color fringing / purple fringing was quite low, although red-eye did creep in occassionally. The camera did a good job focusing, with low light focusing aided by the focus assist lamp. I did not notice vignetting in photos, nor did I notice barrel or pincushion distortion.”

DigiCamReview have reviewed the new dual lens Kodak V570 camera.
“Image quality seemed to be much better outdoors, where images had low noise and high saturation, but indoors images had much higher and noticeable noise. Images were generally quite soft straight from the camera, especially using the ultra-wide angle lens, and could benefit from sharpening. Purple fringing was average, more noticeable with the ultra-wide angle lens, and red-eye was higher than average.”

CNET have just reviewed the new 6 megapixel Sony DSC-W50.
“Your budget would have to be really tight to pass over the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W50 in favor of the Sony DSC-W30. The two cameras are identical with a single exception: The DSC-W50’s 2.5-inch LCD is a full half inch larger then the DSC-W30’s. Otherwise, the W50 sports the same stats as its little brother. Both are 6-megapixel ultracompact cameras with 3X optical zoom lenses. They share the same body design, control layout, and feature set.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have just published their review of the new top of the range 8 megapixel HP Photosmart R927 digital camera.
“The R927’s image quality was OK for an 8-megapixel model. The majority of our outdoor samples were sharp and showed good overall exposure. I was very impressed with the portrait ability, capturing awesome outdoor “people” shots when using the Fill-in flash mode. The AF system did very well, continuously changing focus, even when you are not holding down the shutter release; this also helped with shooting performance. Its HP Precision 3x optical zoom lens covers a focal range of 35-105mm (35mm equivalent), which is typical for a consumer model.”

DPReview have the first online review of the Canon PowerShot A700, a 6 megapixel camera with ISO 800, 2.5 inch LCD and a 6x optical zoom lens.
“Like every A series PowerShot I’ve ever tried, the A700 offers an awful lot of bang for your buck, and more importantly, is a frill-free but very reliable photographic tool with remarkably reliable focus, exposure and color in a wide variety of shooting situations. If you’re looking for a compact camera with full photographic control and like the idea of a bit extra at the long end of the zoom then the A700 is a fairly easy choice (mainly due to the lack of direct competition).”

CNET have taken a look at the new 6 megapixel Sony DSC W30 which offers a 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“Sony’s pocket-size shooter, the Cyber Shot DSC-W30, provides impressive photos and fast, easy operation in a simple package. Digital neophytes may question its modest allotment of seven scene modes, but the available exposure modes do a good job of handling most situations. In fact, snapshooters will likely be pleased with the results they get from this camera. However, a limited 3X zoom lens and a paucity of manual controls limit the DSC-W30’s enthusiast appeal to those looking for a small second camera. “

CNET have reviewed the new Canon PowerShot A530, which offers 5 megapixels, ISO 800, 2.5 inch LCD and a 4x optical zoom lens.
“Speed is really the A530’s weakness. After a start-up time of 2.1 seconds—pretty typical for cameras in this class—and a brisk 0.5-second shutter lag in good light, the lag increases to a full second with the lights turned low. The A530 requires a painful 2.8 seconds between nonflash shots and a full 6 seconds between shots with flash. Even its continuous shooting proved surprisingly slow, averaging about 1.8fps compared to the A540’s 2.3fps.”

CNET have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 which combines a 12x optical zoom lens with MEGA O.I.S. in a compact body.
“Compared to digital SLRs and some other megazoom cameras, the small, lightweight 6-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 feels almost like a toy. Only after acknowledging its powerful 12X (36mm-to-432mm, 35mm-equivalent) optically stabilized lens, manual controls, extended selection of scene modes, and VGA movie capture do you realize that this camera’s capabilities far outstrip its size and weight.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S6, a 6 megapixel, 3x optical zoom len, 3 inch LCD digital camera.
“I was pleased with the overall image quality when using 6-Megapixel Fine mode. Outdoor images showed good overall exposure, with colors being nicely saturated. Noise levels were very low at sensitivity settings of ISO 50 and 100. Shadow noise is present at ISO 200, and noise is noticeable throughout the image at ISO 400, although those images are quite usable.”

DIWA member and Steves Digicams have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Nikon Coolpix S5 digital camera.
“I was disappointed with one aspect of the lens, however; it has a fixed aperture. The lens does include an electronically-controlled neutral-density filter that reduces the available light to an effective f/8 from f/3 at wide angle, but that step is sometimes too great, causing the exposure system to select it in combination with a slow shutter speed, sometimes resulting in images blurred by camera shake even in bright sunlight. The lens also exhibits a bit of vignetting, or light fall-off at the corners.”

DigiCamReview has the first online review of the Olympus mju 720 SW, a 7.1 megapixel, 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, weatherproof digital camera.
“The Olympus Stylus / Mju 720SW has a LOT going for it, and would be especially suited to someone who wants to take their camera with them everywhere they go, especially if they’re prone to dropping things, getting things wet, getting things dusty. The shockproof and dustproof qualities, and the solid build of the digital camera is likely to make the digital camera last much longer than other digital cameras, this makes it excellent value for money compared to less solid digital cameras.”
