DCResource have reviewed the Kodak Easyshare P850 camera which features a 12x, 36 – 432 mm, image-stabilised, f2.8 – f/3.7, SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON lens.
“The P850 is an average-sized ultra zoom camera that features a 5.1 Megapixel CCD, 12X optical zoom lens, optical image stabilizer, and 2.5” LCD display. This is Kodak’s first camera with image stabilization, and it helps to keep the P850 competitive in the crowded ultra zoom field. While the camera’s LCD is large, I found its resolution and low light visibility to be lacking. The camera’s electronic viewfinder was better in terms of resolution, but not low light visibility. Build quality on the P850 was quite good, and it fits well in your hand. About the only things I didn’t care for in the design department are the command dial/set button combination and the power switch.”

PCMagazine have just reviewed the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a 10.3 megapixel compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor that allows for a “live” preview.
“If you’ve got deep pockets, absolutely abhor changing lenses, and don’t mind a 5X optical zoom limit, perhaps this camera’s great image quality will offset its heft and make it a good buy. For everyone outside that narrow subset of photographers, however, there are just too many good enthusiast cameras and affordable D-SLRs to consider spending so much on this one. Save $300 and go with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30, or if you like a wider angle on your zoom, go for the Fuji FinePix S9000. If you’ve got a thousand bucks to spend on your next camera, though, we suggest making the leap to a D-SLR and picking up the Nikon D50 with two lenses.”

CNET have reviewed the new Olympus SP-350, an 8 megapixel camera that offers a 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-114mm and a 2.5 inch LCD monitor.
“The smart-looking, matte-black, 8-megapixel Olympus SP-350 is one of three cameras that launched Olympus’s SP line; the other two are its 7-megapixel twin, the SP-310, and the 6-megapixel, 10X-zoom SP-500 UZ. The Barbie-size SP-350 is not only one of the most affordable 8-megapixel cameras on the market but also one of the smallest. Its 24 scene modes will appeal to snapshooters, while enthusiasts will appreciate this pocketful’s manual controls, raw-capture and custom settings, and optional conversion lenses, external flash, and underwater housing. Once you get past those attractions, however, you’re left with relatively mediocre performance and photos.”

BIOS Magazine have published their review of the Canon IXUS 750 digital camera (also known as the Canon PowerShot SD550), which has 7.1 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.
“There are three things that strike you about the IXUS 750 (PowerShot ELPH SD550 in the US): its compact size; solid and robust design; and the large 2.5-inch screen which occupies most of the camera’s rear. The fact that the camera offers a capture resolution of 7.1-Megapixels (3072x2304 pixels) is also impressive.”

ImagingResource have reviewed the Canon PowerShot A620, which features a 7.1 megapixel sensor, 2 inch LCD screen and 4x optical zoom lens equivalent to 35–140 mm focal length.
“The PowerShot A620 sits at the top of Canon’s A-series—a lineup distinguished by cameras that are fairly compact, relatively inexpensive and equipped with a robust set of exposure controls. The A620 is no exception: priced under $400, it has a powerful 7.1-megapixel CCD—ideal for photographers who like especially large prints or who frequently crop their photos. With exposure controls that range from full-automatic, snap-shot simplicity to full-manual creativity, the A620 is a good choice for a family with widely differing photography skills. Given its low price and breadth of features, it should also be attractive to budding shooters on tight budgets who want to advance their photographic skills.”

PCMagazine have published their review of the Kodak Easyshare V550, a 5 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5inch LCD screen.
“Controls and menus, which are organized in a very much like those on the V530, are clear, easy to use, and numerous. In addition to the controls on the back of the camera, there are buttons etched into the metal on the top—a cool touch. These let you access scene modes, video modes, and the auto setting. The V530’s buttons are more clearly recognizable, which makes it easier to use, but the V550 clearly wins on style. We also love the dock Kodak includes with both models.”

DigitalCameraInfo have published a review of the Fujifilm FinePix S5600 Zoom, a 5 megapixel compact digital camera with Fujifilm’s new 5th Generation Super CCD HR sensor with Real Photo Technology. The Fujifilm S5600 has an ISO range of 64 to 1600 and boasts a 10x optical zoom lens.
“The SLR-like Fujifilm FinePix S5200 is a 5.1 megapixel (effective) 10x ultra zoom camera with the typical priorities of a long zoom Fuji: it lacks optical image stabilization, but attempts to compensate with extended ISO settings up to 1600 and a pretty wide maximum aperture to allow fast shutter speeds, minimizing the need for image stabilization. Its images are captured with a 1/2.5” CCD and will appear on a 1.8” LCD monitor, as will its 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 video clips in AVI (Motion JPEG) format. The S5200 is a light, compact camera that offers manual control options, high sensitivity settings and a long telephoto lens to a range of consumers at a list price of $399.95 – going as low as $320 online. “

DigitalCameraReview have reviewed the Kodak Easyshare P850 camera which features a 12x, 36 – 432 mm, image-stabilised, f2.8 – f/3.7, SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON lens.
“Overall I walk away impressed with the P850. Image quality is excellent, the 30 fps video mode could almost double as video camera, image stabilization helps in many less-than-ideal shooting situations, and the 2.5” LCD is a joy to use. What it lacks for in speed (vs. digital SLRs) it makes up for in controls and image and video quality. For the photographer looking to go beyond the basic, wanting manual creativity of the shot, and not seeking to dump $1000 plus into a digital SLR, the P850 is the ticket.”

CNET have just reviewed the Nikon Coolpix L1 digicam, which offers a 5x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD monitor and 6.2 megapixels.
“The Nikon Coolpix L1 is not a fast camera. Since all operations cease while it writes an image to its built-in storage or to an SD memory card, it takes an excruciatingly long 6.8 seconds between shots in single-shot mode; make it 9.5 seconds if you’re using flash. Continuous-shooting speed is a little less than 0.7 frame per second, so forget about catching frenetic sports action with this camera. While the L1 takes about 5 seconds to fire off a shot after you press the power button, it has an adequate 0.9-second shutter lag in high-contrast lighting.”

DigiCamReview have reviewed the Olympus FE-120, a 6 megapixel camera with 3x zoom lens and 1.8 inch LCD screen.
“The camera is very easy to use. The controls on the back of the camera are very easy to use. The camera is fairly compact and pocketable in baggy trouser pockets. The menus are easy to use, and the options are easy enough to see clearly. The modes are easy to access, quick and simple - there’s a fully automatic mode as well as lots of scene modes for simple point and shoot operation. The camera is an excellent example of a point and shoot camera, with very little in the way of more advanced controls, it would be very easy to use for beginners making good photos atainable every time.”

DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Canon PowerShot S80, an 8 megapixel update of the S70 which offers a 28-100mm f/2.8-5.3 lens, 2.5 inch LCD screen and Canon’s advanced image processor, DIGIC II.
“The Canon PowerShot S80 is the successor to the Powershot S70 that we reviewed in 2004. It offers a marginal improvement in resolution (8-megapixels versus 7.1), while retaining the versatile 28-100mm optical zoom lens. Canon also improved the camera’s buffering, offering an unlimited shooting depth during rapid or continuous operation. Like the S70, it is an enthusiast’s camera, offering complete exposure control and manual focus, while its automatic and scene modes will allow the beginner to obtain good results without any fuss. But unlike the S70, RAW shooting mode is not a feature of the S80.”
