Canon PowerShot SD200 Digital ELPHBob Atkins has published a review of the 3 megapixel Canon Digital IXUS 30 (also known as the PowerShot SD200 Digital ELPH).

“You don’t buy an SD200 (or SD300/400) for advanced photography. You can get cameras with more capability (aperture priority, shutter priority and manual exposure for example) for the same price or maybe less (e.g. Powershot A510 or Powershot A520, or check out my full review of the Powershot A610) However they are larger and the major reason you’d buy an SD200 is because it’s small. Despite the lack of full manual control, I still like the SD200. In fact I bought one myself so I’d have a camera that I can basically take anywhere!”

HP Photosmart R817CNET have just reviewed the new HP Photosmart R817, which offers 5 megapixels and a 5x optical zoom lens.

“When buying a digital camera, the rule of thumb has been small size, small price, big features—choose any two. With recent technological advances and price reductions, you can almost have all three at the same time. The Photosmart R817 is one of HP’s recent efforts to cram its mix of image-enhancing technologies into an inexpensive, pocket-size camera. The 6.7-ounce R817 has a 5.1-megapixel sensor, a mostly metal body, and a bright 2-inch LCD screen. It also has a 5X optical zoom, which is unusual in a camera this small. Less impressive, it lacks an optical viewfinder (which can be a problem in bright sunlight), some of its photos are overly noisy, and the battery can take four to six hours to recharge.”

Olympus FE-110CNET have reviewed the 5 megapixel Olympus FE-110 digital camera.

“Although its most basic specs make the Olympus FE-110 seem like a junior version of the current top FE-series model, the 6-megapixel FE-120, more than a million pixels separate the two cameras. More importantly, the Olympus FE-110 mounts an entirely different lens, has a chunkier body shape with a different control layout, and offers more than a dozen fewer scene modes. Where the FE-120 offsets its ho-hum features with good image quality and a bargain street price, for about $30 less, the FE-110 delivers only mediocre images and strips the features to the bare minimum. It’s more akin to the superbudget FE-100.”

Kodak EasyShare OneDIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the new Kodak EasyShare One Wi-Fi digital camera.

“The EasyShare-One is one of the most unique digicams we have seen thus far from Kodak (11.2005.) This is not your typical point-n-shoot model, more like a “PDA/Digital Camera”. The camera side of the model offers users a 4-megapixel imager, 3x optical zoom lens, swiveling 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD as well as various user friendly exposure modes (Auto, Portrait, Sports, Landscape, Close-up, Night portrait, Night landscape, Snow, Beach, Text, Fireworks, Flower, Museum/Polite, Self-portrait, Party, Children, and Backlight.) Canon IXUS 55Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Canon IXUS 55 compact digital camera (also known as the SD450), which has 5.0 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.

“With the PowerShot SD550 and SD450 Digital ELPH, Canon has once again stood its stylish ELPH digital cameras on end, packing even more features into the stylish compacts. The 7.12-megapixel SD550 and 5.0-megapixel SD450 have the same shell and specs as their SD500 and SD400 predecessors (which continue to be available), but offer more options. Canon has retained their acclaimed optical viewfinder but matched it with a large 2.5-inch LCD monitor, redesigning the user interface to take advantage of the new screen. Both continue to offer the extremely unusual (and frankly, rather cool) “My Color” modes that allow you to selectively replace any color in your photo with a different one, or to make the image black and white with the exception of a single color. Overall, the SD450 is one of the more appealing subcompact digital cameras we’ve seen to date.”

“Replacing the S7000 at the top of Fuji’s consumer digicam product line, the FinePix S9000 ups the ante in terms of resolution (9 vs 6.3 megapixels) and zoom range (10.7x 28-300mm vs 6x 35-210mm), while retaining the SLR-like form factor, advanced features and VGA movie mode of its predecessor. While it can be used as a simple point-n-shoot in Auto and Scene modes, the S9000 will appeal most to experienced photographers who will benefit from its advanced exposure control and optics.”

Olympus SP-310DPReview have just reviewed the 7 megapixel Olympus SP-310 digital camera.

“The SP-310 is perhaps a camera that deserves more attention than it has so far received - it offers a comprehensive feature set at a remarkably low price in an easy to use and well put together package. Yes, the JPEG output suffers from the same over-sharpening artefacts as the recently-reviewed Stylus 800, but to a significantly lesser degree, and certainly not in a way that will adversely affect prints. And of course in mitigation SP-310 also offers the advantage of raw capture to those with the patience to wait 10 seconds between shots and to fine tune the conversion.”

Olympus SP-350TrustedReviews have a review of the new Olympus SP-350, an 8 megapixel camera that offers a 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-114mm and a 2.5 inch LCD monitor.

“Like all Olympus models, the SP-350’s build quality is outstandingly good, and even though it has a plastic body it feels solid and robust. Although it is physically quite a small camera, it has a large sculpted handgrip and is comfortable and secure to hold. Pressing the small and slightly fiddly power button next to the optical viewfinder activates the camera in about 1.5 seconds, a very creditable performance. The main shooting control is the mode dial on the top panel, which offers a choice of full auto, program exposure, aperture or shutter priority and full manual, as well as 24 pre-set scene modes and four use-defined ‘My modes’.”

Sanyo Xacti E6CNET have reviewed the Sanyo Xacti E6, a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 38-114mm.

“Sanyo, which produces many of the snapshot digital cameras you see marketed under other brand names, is stepping up its efforts to gain some brand recognition of its own. Given that the company’s name is hardly synonymous with high quality, we started off with low expectations for the company’s Xacti VPC-E6, a 6-megapixel, 3X-zoom ultracompact. We were pleasantly surprised to find it a decent—albeit a little pricey—snapshot camera with an eye-catching 3-inch LCD, a graphical user interface, and reasonable image quality. Only the performance disappointed.”

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1DCResource have just reviewed the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a 10.3 megapixel compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor that allows for a “live” preview.

“The photo quality, as I’ve said, is stellar. I have a lot of cameras here in my office, and the R1 was what I always grabbed when I had a challenging shot to take. The camera’s high ISO performance approaches that of the best consumer-level D-SLRs, and it blows away fixed-lens cameras. At low ISO sensitivities photos are clear as glass, and purple fringing levels are low. The camera doesn’t apply too much sharpening to photos at the default settings, so you may want to bump that up if it bothers you.”

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1Luminous Landscape have just reviewed the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a 10.3 megapixel compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor that allows for a “live” preview.

“I am very ambivalent about the Sony R1. With its large and high resolution sensor, excellent lens, and first rate build quality for under US $1,000 it offers photographers a combination of features and abilities that in a DSLR would cost 2-3X as much to implement. But, it still is a digicam – or FLD, and therefore lacks some of the features that DSLR users take for granted, such as fast frame rates and snappy autofocus. In exchange the R1 offers a waist level finder, a real-time histogram, and totally silent operation – features that no DSLR can provide.”

Samsung have announced plans to add mobile TV and movie playback to their future digital cameras. In an article on the Korea Times website, a company spokesperson said “Our DMB cameras will compete against phones as we will arm them with a screen as large as 3 inches diagonally, much larger than today’s DMB phones at about 2.2 inches.” Samsung also stated that they aim to become one of the top 3 digital camera makers by 2007, which is to say the least an aggressive aim. It remains to be seen if adding new features previosuly unseen in digicams will tempt buyers to purchase a Samsung product.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1Imaging Resource have just reviewed the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1, a 10.3 megapixel compact camera with an APS-C sized sensor that allows for a “live” preview.

“Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-R1 is one of the latest in the long (and incredibly broad) line of digital cameras that reflects Sony’s commanding position in the digital camera marketplace. The Sony R1 (considerably) extends the high range of the Cyber-shot line, offering a full 10.3 megapixels of resolution, via a Sony-built CMOS sensor. The CMOS sensor in the DSC-R1 is just slightly smaller than the “APS-C” size imagers used in most current digital SLRs, and brings with it the expected improvement in image noise levels and ISO sensitivity that naturally accompany larger sensor chips. At the same time though, the Sony DSC-R1 takes advantage of the low power consumption of CMOS to provide a live electronic viewfinder display, something missing in typical SLR camera designs. Because it needs no bulky mirror assembly, the rear element of the Sony DSC-R1’s 5x zoom lens can get much closer to the sensor’s surface, greatly reducing chromatic aberration and improving corner to corner sharpness. A unique, 2.0” top-mounted, swiveling LCD monitor rounds out the package. Taken as a package, the Sony DSC-R1 delivers excellent optical and image quality at an affordable price, and is sure to present a compelling proposition for many photographers who might otherwise be considering a digital SLR.”

“The Kodak EasyShare P880 is the flagship model of the manufacturer’s new Performance Series. The 8 megapixel digital camera was announced in August 2005 and released just in time for the holiday shopping rush. With its 1/1.8-inch CCD and Kodak Color Science Chip, the P880 has SLR-like qualities while still being marketed as easy to use. While it is SLR shaped, the wide 24-140mm (equivalent) Schneider-Kreuznach 5.8x optical zoom lens cannot be taken off. The Kodak P880 also has a 2.5-inch LCD screen and an electronic viewfinder. This SLR-shaped digital camera sells for a retail price of $599, which is more than most compacts but less than even entry level consumer DSLRs. This is exactly where Kodak wants the P880.”
