Olympus have issued an advisory notice about the recent CCD problem that most other camera manufacturers have reported. The Camedia C-5050 Zoom (pictured) and C-730UZ cameras are the models at risk.
Olympus Advisory Notice Excerpt
It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of C-5050 Zoom and C-730UZ cameras may exhibit the following symptoms:
In picture taking mode, the camera will produce pictures that are of a gray or purple tone or the pictures will becompletely black. If the LCD monitor (or the C-730UZ electronic viewfinder) is used to compose the picture, the preview display will also be dark.

DCViews have published their review of the Kodak Easyshare V550, a 5 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5inch LCD screen.
“The Kodak V550 is equipped with an all glass f/2.8-4.8 36-108mm (eq.) Schneider-Kreuznach lens with aspheric elements and a 3x zoom range, which is quite common in this class of camera. We were quite pleased with the performance of this lens as it shows only very mild barrel distortion at wide angle and no signs of vignetting or blur at all. Images were sharp from corner to corner and well-exposed with nice saturated colours. In bright lighting conditions saturation might prove to be a bit much, but if you prefer more subdued colours you could set colour mode to Low for more realistic results. Noise was not a problem at low ISO settings and even at 400 ISO it should be possible to get prints without too much visible grain. An 800 ISO setting is provided but this can only be used at the smallest resolution (1.8Mp) and noise levels are too high even for standard print sizes.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.
“Impressive is the Canon EOS 5D certainly where image quality is concerned in combination with the new EF 24-105 f/4 L IS USM lens. The sharpness is outstandingly high and the colour reproduction especially accurate. Picture Style lets you adjust it to your own taste. What’s more is the fact that the new Canon EOS 5D excels on noise and dynamic range. Moreover, ISO 3200 can be used perfectly for high quality prints and in light as well as dark areas the detail remains clearly visible. This is really impressive; you have to see it to believe it. The Canon 5D and the EOS-1D Mark II N are similar in this case. For the competitors it will be a hard nut to crack!”

“With a list price of less than $700, the FZ30 is a camera that promises versatility and large images for a lot less money than an SLR. The FZ30 includes Panasonic’s very effective “MEGA Optical Image Stabilization” to combat blur due to camera shake, a vital feature in a camera with a 420mm (equivalent) telephoto range. Panasonic has an excellent reputation for image stabilized compact cameras, compelling those photographers looking for a strong SLR alternative with high resolution to take a hard look at the FZ30. “

DPReview have just reviewed the new Olympus mju DIGITAL 800 digicam.
“It’s hard to know how to rate a camera like the Stylus 800. On the one hand it’s responsive, well-specified, well made, well priced and has a fantastic screen. That it’s weatherproof too is a significant added bonus if you like to shoot in challenging environments. On the other hand the results are - if we’re going to be very critical - disappointing, especially if you use any setting other than the best ‘SHQ’ mode.”

CNET have just reviewed the Casio Exilim EX-Z57, a compact 5 megapixel digital camera with a 2.7 inch LCD screen.
“At some point, you have to figure that the dominant digital photography trends of smaller cameras, bigger LCD screens, and more megapixels will reach a critical point, and we’ll be left with some sort of tiny 12-megapixel monocle. Until that day arrives, we’ll have to settle for models such as Casio’s 5-megapixel Exilim EX-Z57 digital camera, a highly portable snapshot camera with a 2.7-inch LCD that’s as bright as it is large. Though the Z57’s lack of manual features and poor outdoor imaging can be frustrating at times, the camera delivers pleasing indoor results and acceptable shot-to-shot performance.”

Kyocera Japan have issued a service advisory for their Finecam S5R, Finecam S5,Finecam S3L and Contax TVS DIGITAL digital cameras for the same CCD problem that has plagued almost every digital camera manufacturer recently. CNET have published the first online review of the new 6 megapixel Casio Exilim EX-Z110 digital camera.
“The Casio Exilim EX-Z110 doesn’t have the sleek and sexy form factor of its siblings, but this 6-megapixel, 3X zoom camera offers a broad range of features—including manual exposure controls and a wealth of scene modes—that will appeal to an equally varied array of photographers. Its image quality falls a little short of good, and its performance is mixed, but snapshooters who want more than just a basic point-and-shoot may find this camera appealing.”

Sony Press Release
Analysts agree. Sony’s Cyber-shot® digital cameras are proving to be a popular choice among women.
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 17, 2005 - According to the NPD Group, 53 percent of all digital camera purchases from May to July were made by women. Of Sony digital camera purchases, 56 percent were made by women, beating the industry average. This is up from 42 percent a year ago.
In a research study conducted in April entitled Closing the Technology Gender Gap; What Women Really Want, analysts from IDC found that women were not only tech savvy, but also very busy, pragmatic individuals, who demand performance and convenience from the products they buy. According to the study, women don’t have time to “tinker” with their gadgets; they require reliable and intuitive devices that are ready when they are.
