Digital version of the Ricoh GR camera to be announced!

On September 13 RICOH will announce the arrival of a new Super High Imaging Quality compact digital camera. This exceptional camera will be the digital version of the well-known GR analog camera series.

The GR1 was first launched in October 96. Thereafter followed the GR1s, GR10, GR21 and GR1V. Although using 28mm and 21mm wide angle lenses, the quality was such that images were sharp right up to the edge; in fact a special L-mount version of the 28mm GR lens was made and rated highly by specialist reviews. DigiCamReview have published their review of the Sony DSC-W7, a 7 megapixel digital camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen, battery life of 380 shots between power charges and 32 megabytes of internal memory.

“Image quality is quite good, the images have good colour, saturation, contrast and good detail - however there is some purple fringing, and some images were quite soft. Images tend to come out of the camera looking quite good, however exposure of the clock towere wasn’t excellent, and blown highlights occured in the shops photo. The camera did a good job focusing the majority of the time, only slightly struggling in low light. Noise was fairly well controlled but resulted in loss of detail. I did not notice vignetting in photos.”

“Overall the DSC-T5’s image quality is good, but not great. As is the case with some other of these ultra thin cameras, the T5’s images have a soft, “fuzzy” look to them. This will only be noticeable when viewing images at 100% or making large prints, so it will not be a problem for most people. Otherwise the news is good: the camera took photos with accurate exposure and color, and noise levels were low. Purple fringing was not a problem.”

The Sanyo Xacti E6 is introduced. Announced by Sanyo Japan, the Xacti E6 is a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 38-114mm. The most striking aspect of the Sanyo E6 is on the back of the camera - a massive 3 inch touch-sensitive LCD screen with 230,000 pixels! Another interesting feature of the Sanyo Xacti E6 is its touch-sensitive shutter button, which focuses on the subject as soon as you touch the button (rather than having to half-press it). Shutter lag is therefore just 0.05 seconds. Other features include 16 Mb of internal memory, MPEG4 video clips and various digital effects. The Sanyo Xacti S6 is launched in Japan in September.

An interesting feature of the Sanyo Xacti S6 is its touch-sensitive shutter button, which focuses on the subject as soon as you touch the button (rather than having to half-press it). Shutter lag is therefore just 0.05 seconds. Other features include a rather slow start-up time of 2.4 seconds, 15 Mb of internal memory and the ability to focus on a subject that is 5cms away from the camera in Macro mode. The Sanyo Xacti S6 will cost 37,000 yen (around $335 USD) when it is launched in Japan in October.

TrustedReviews have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F10 Zoom, which has an ISO range of 80 to 1600, Super CCD sensor with 6.1 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“Despite my love of photography, there are few cameras that I would describe as a real pleasure to use, but the F10 is one of them. It feels solid and comfortable in the hand, the controls fall neatly under the fingers and thumb, and respond quickly and positively. The camera’s performance is also exemplary. It starts up in 1.3 seconds, which is respectably quick for a camera in this class. It has minimal shutter lag, and a consistent shot-to-shot time of just over a second in High-Speed Shooting mode. The AF system is particularly good. I was testing this camera alongside a similarly-specified model from another manufacturer, and in every situation the Fuji focused and shot faster.”
