DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Canon Digital IXUS 50, a 5 megapixel digital camera with stainless steel finish that is Canon’s smallest ever 5.0 Megapixel optical zoom camera. The Canon IXUS 50 features a 3.0x zoom, a large 2.0” LCD screen and high quality VGA video clips at 30fps.
“The SD400’s lens is an excellent piece of glass. It has a flexible zoom range of 35-105mm in 35mm equivalence, providing a moderately wide field of view for interior and scenic shots, and telephoto coverage useful for portraits and to bring your distant subjects closer. The lens exhibits noticeable barrel distortion at wide angle, but no pin cushioning at telephoto. Chromatic aberrations are well controlled, with only the slightest amount of purple fringing detectable in high contrast areas. The lens produces sharp results from corner to corner, and is a good match for the SD400’s 5-megapixel imager.”

“Marketed to the novice, the HP Photosmart R717 compact camera boasts some strong qualities, including helpful information on many of the menu screens and fairly speedy recycle times. Unfortunately, HP’s first foray into the 6-megapixel market just doesn’t generate top-notch picture quality.”

PC Magazine have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F10 Zoom, which has an ISO range of 80 to 1600, Super CCD sensor with 6.1 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“In the realm of digital photography, it seems that behind all promising new technology lies a trade-off. Such is the case with Fuji’s Real Photo Technology, which is built into the new 6.3-megapixel FinePix F10 digital camera. Fuji claims that the algorithm included in the F10 lets you shoot in low-light situations, such as candlelight or night scenes, without a flash, yet avoid blurred photographs. Too good to be true, right? The answer is a qualified “yes.”“

“The Olympus Stylus 500 should definitely be on your shopping list of possible digital cameras if you’re looking for a tiny, easy-to-use 5 megapixel camera with a large LCD screen. The quality of the photos is excellent and the camera starts up very fast. You may need to take a little more care with this camera due to its construction and susceptibility to scratches, but overall, it’s a great little camera that you’ll be happy to have with you.”

ePhotoZine have published a brief review of the Olympus µ(mju: )-mini Digital SS, a 5 megapixel digital camera with 2x optical zoom lens equivalent to 35-70mm.
“It was an Olympus pocket digital camera that has to take the blame, a few years ago, for getting me into digital photography. That was a two-megapixel model and things have come on a fair stretch since then. This one is less than half the size and has more than twice the resolution! Although the pictures came out a little over sharp for someone who always shoots RAW, the results were nice for a straight out Jpeg.”

DPReview have reviewed the Sony DSC-S90 digicam, which has a 3x optical zoom lens, 32 MB of internal memory and 550 shots battery life.
“There are many 4MP cameras on the market today offering serious competition for the S90 - many of them costing slightly less, many of them boasting a much slicker design. But the Sony has a few things going for it - very fast focus, big screen, manual exposure mode, excellent handling and a very high ‘hit-rate’, with very few shots ruined by camera errors. The nearest competitor is the Canon PowerShot A520, a camera with better photographic control, metal body and a marginally sharper lens, but without the S90’s very fast focus or big bright screen.”

CNET have just posted their review of the 7 megapixel Casio EXILIM Pro EX-P700.
” The Casio EX-P700 Exilim Pro follows in the midrange enthusiast footsteps of the company’s well-received P600, sporting a new black chassis and a seventh megapixel. Otherwise, and to the P700’s credit, the two cameras are largely similar; they have the same extensive feature set, they capture equally pleasing images, and both feature the surprisingly pocketable design that made the P600 a joy to tote around. However, though its performance is quite comparable to that of other 7-megapixel models in its class, the P700 doesn’t quite match the sprightly response of its predecessor. In addition, Casio still hasn’t addressed the P600’s subpar video capabilities.”

DCResource have just reviewed the new Casio EX-Z750 Exilim Zoom, which has a 7.2 megapixel CCD sensor, large 2.5-inch LCD screen and offers a battery life of 325 shots.
“The EX-Z750 has plenty of features to talk about as well. It has tons (and I mean tons) of scene modes that even extend to movie mode. If you want manual controls, they’re all here, though I don’t like the limited aperture choices. Speaking of movie mode, the Z750’s is excellent. You can record high quality VGA (30 fps) video until the memory card is full. Thanks to Casio’s use of the MPEG-4 codec file sizes are small and a high speed memory card is not required. The downside is that Mac compatibility isn’t the best. The camera offers several movie modes and you can edit your “films” when they’re done or grab frames from them.”

Pocket-Lint have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix 7900, a 7 megapixel digital camera featuring a 2.0-inch LCD screen, new graphical user interface and a 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens equivalent to 38-114mm lens in 35mm format.
” Nikon has distilled most of the good bits from this camera’s Coolpix predecessors, creating an almost perfect point and shooter. Image stabilisation would be nice and some perfecting of the AF system would be even nicer, but otherwise the Coolpix 7900 is very accomplished, particularly when you realise you can make prints up to A3, at an output resolution of 200dpi, or even bigger if you know what you’re doing thanks to its 7MP sensor. A near perfect Nikon point and shooter at a neat price too.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S1, a 5.1 megapixel digital camera with a 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens.
“The overall conclusion is that there are hardly any disadvantages on the Nikon Coolpix S1. Bearing in mind the target group at which the Nikon is aimed at, there are no comments from our side. Regarding the speed, the Nikon S1 could be optimised here and there. An enhancement of the shutter speeds, to a slower and faster shutter speed would be desirable. Also speed could be gained with focussing, it takes a while before the flash is recharged completely and the camera has a limited range of ISO sensitivities up to ISO 400. Besides this, the optical zoom lens could do with more stops when zooming from wide angle to telephoto and vice versa.”

DigitalCameraInfo have published their review of the Kodak EasyShare Z700, a 4 megapixel digital camera with 5x optical zoom lens.
“It’s easy to take snapshots with the Z700, and with the printer dock, it’s easy to print 4 x 6-inch prints of them, and easy to get the prints onto a computer or uploaded to Kodak’s online services. Kodak has been remarkably thorough in creating a system that really is self-explanatory. At moments when you’d need to read the manual with lesser devices, the Z700 provides a helpful hint right on the camera’s LCD screen. The camera’s poor resolution and limited manual controls are irrelevant to folks who will use it to make small prints and 50-kilobyte JPEGs for e-mailing. What’s for sale here is an easy-to-use integrated system – an environment, really – for taking pictures with as little bother as possible and gaining instant results and prints. Little effort and little work are needed to run the gamut on the Z700. This will be an ideal and affordable alternative for the right type of user.”

TrustedReviews take a look at the Pentax OptioS5n, a stylish and compact 5 megapixel digital camera with 3x optical zoom lens and 2 inch LCD screen.
“Overall image quality is extremely good, with superb natural colour reproduction, consistently accurate exposure and minimal lens distortion. The Pentax Sliding Lens System, although an admirable piece of optical engineering, does have something of a reputation for barrel distortion and corner blurring at the wide angle setting, however it looks like some improvements have been made this time around because these problems appear to have been all but eliminated. Another problem which plagues many high-performance cameras, the dreaded purple fringe, is also thankfully kept to an almost invisible minimum.”
