San Bernardino, CA –January 18, 2005 - Ricoh Corporation a leader in specialized digital imaging devices today launched the Pro G3. The Pro G3 is a high-resolution digital camera that embeds captured images with GPS coordinate information received from either its on-board GPS unit or from external GPS devices.
Once these captured ‘geo-images’ are transferred to a PC, they are automatically converted to shape files or merged to geo-databases for instant integration into Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Points representing each image’s position may be hovered over to display a thumbnail, or clicked on to access the full-size image.

Digital Camera Info have published their first impressions of the 4-megapixel Olympus C-170 (also called the D-425 in the US) that was announced a couple of weeks ago at the CES show.
“As Naoki Tai, the product manager at Olympus Imaging America, Inc., put it, “The D-425 was developed with the first time digital camera user in mind. Every feature was designed for simplicity and ease of use.” This simple point-and-shoot is definitely easy to use and has a small price tag on it of $149. However, the cheap plastic construction and lack of optical zoom is disappointing. This is probably the cheapest camera with 4 megapixels currently on the market, so as long as consumers don’t use the digital zoom, the pictures should be decent quality and easy to obtain.”

DCResource have just reviewed the Pentax Optio SV, a compact digicam with 5 Megapixels and 5x zoom lens.
“I was a bit disappointed with the Optio SV’s image quality. While they are well-exposed with accurate color and little purple fringing, they seemed soft and fuzzy to me, with a lot of detail missing. Photos seem like they’re from a camcorder or a video grab rather than from a 5 Megapixel digital camera. Noise levels were quite high as well—images on the SV are noisier than on most of the 8 Megapixel cameras I’ve seen lately. Now I don’t want to discourage you completely. If your plans are to make 4 x 6 inch prints, these issues are major. For large prints or 100% on-screen viewing, you’ll likely be disappointed.”

“The Olympus Mju-mini Digital has an exclusive and unique design. Jokingly people refer to it as: that piece of soap. However, this is detrimental to the daring design of the gentlemen of the Olympus’ design department. The camera is extremely compact and light-weighted. “The ease of use and comfortable handling make this Cyber-shot model an attractive digital camera for the right type of user. The high megapixel count and larger 2-inch LCD make this camera an even better bargain at $399. The 7.2-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P200 was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and will be released to the consumer market in February 2005. The compact point-and-shoot has a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3x optical zoom lens that extends from the camera body when powered up. The P200 is easy to use for the style-driven beginner and only gets better with increased photographic knowledge and utilization of manual functions.”

“The images have okay colour, saturation and contrast. Images appear to have fairly low noise, with good detail, but show signs of corner softness and vignetting. Purple fringing was slightly evident in some of the photos but isn’t a major concern. There is a good range of image sizes and compression options. The macro mode is very good, although the flash did cause problems when the subject was close. Auto white balance and metering seemed to be quite poor, often producing green colours indoors, or the wrong skin tones, as well as loosing highlight detail inside and outside. The movie mode is average, at 320x240/15fps with sound. When inside, the camera does a good job of focusing, due to the AF-assist lamp, and the flash is fairly decent.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50, a new compact and stylish 5.0 megapixel camera which features a large 2.0-inch LCD screen, enhanced speed and other design improvements.
“I printed out some of our test shots from it on the Canon i9900 printer we have in our studio. (An excellent printer, with great color and high resolution.) Looking at prints from the X50, I found its output looked great when printed as large as 13x19 inches. While I found the X50’s image noise levels at ISO 400 very objectionable when I viewed its images onscreen, 4x6 prints of my ISO 400 shots by and large looked entirely acceptable, and even 5x7 prints of some subjects looked OK. (The exception would be subjects with large areas of relatively flat tints, such as skies, solid-color walls, etc. In such instances, the colored noise speckles were still quite visible, even in 4x6 prints.”

Konica Minolta Japan yesterday announced a new waterproof digital camera. The 4 megapixel DG-5W is waterproof down to 1.5 meters, dustproof and shockproof. Sporting a 2 inch LCD screen and 28-78mm lens, the DG-5W will launch in March costing ¥80,000. No word yet on availability/price outside Japan.
