Nikon Coolpix 8400DPReview have published their review of the 8 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8400.

“The Coolpix 8400’s unique lens makes it an interesting beast, it offers a slightly wider field of view (about 10° more; 72° horizontally at 24 mm equiv.) than other prosumer eight megapixel digital cameras which start at 28 mm equiv. That extra 10° can be especially useful if you shoot a lot of architecture, landscapes, real estate etc. At the other end of zoom however it has the least telephoto of any current eight megapixel, its nearest competitor, the Olympus C-8080 WZ offers 28 - 140 mm equiv. (compared to the 8400’s 24 - 85 mm equiv.)”

Nikon Coolpix 8800DPReview have just posted their full review of the new 8 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8800.

“The Coolpix 8800 is out to prove that it’s a credible alternative to the new cheaper digital SLR’s and a set of lenses. From a practicality stand point it certainly delivers, in a package not much bigger than the smallest D-SLR you get eight megapixels and a 35 - 350 mm equiv. lens with Vibration Reduction. Next you consider the price, which may seem high but when you take into account how much a D-SLR and matching set of lenses would cost it does start to make sense. Where the 8800 can’t compete however is noise at higher sensitivities and the ‘SLR shooting experience’ (camera feel, manual zoom, AF speed, shutter lag and processing / write speed).”

Olympus Mju - mini DIGITALDigitalCameraInfo have just posted their review of the diminutive and stylish 4 megapixel Olympus Mju Mini digicam (called the Stylus Verve in the USA).

“The Olympus Stylus Verve contains an aspherical glass 35-70mm (equivalent) variable focal length lens with 2x optical and 4x digital zoom capabilities. The focal length is easily altered using the small zoom toggle controls on the back of the camera. While these control buttons are a bit cumbersome to access with their meager dimensions, application is simple and strait-forward and adjustments are registered almost instantly. For a pocket-sized point-and-shoot camera, the zoom range will offer the user some flexibility in the type of shot available; however, the fully extended telephoto view of the Verve does not quite parallel its competitors, many of which extend up to 114mm and beyond.”

HP Photosmart R507DigiCamReview have posted their review of the 4 megapixel HP Photosmart R507 digital camera.

“The camera has an okay flash, and copes fairly well with group photos - HP’s Adaptive Lighting is recommended here, as this brightens up the darker areas of the image. Red eye was noticable on some photos of people - this can be removed in camera using HP’s red-eye reduction. Some of the images looked a bit soft, especially to the left of the image, and had fairly low contrast. The camera did okay focusing in low light - but did fail on some occasions. Skin colour was quite good.”

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1DCResource have published their review of the 4 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1.

“Overall I’d rank the L1’s image quality as just okay. While my real world photos were well-exposed with accurate colors, details in the pictures seemed soft and fuzzy. Even the sky seemed unusually blotchy. In addition, there was vignetting to be found in many of my photos. I’ve seen this before on other ultra-compact cameras (the Minolta DiMAGE X-series comes to mind), and I think it’s just one of the tradeoffs that comes with a tiny camera like this. Still, you’ll be able to get nice small prints or web-sized photos from the L1. Those with larger print needs or higher expectations should look elsewhere.”

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T33Technology website I4U are reporting that Sony are introducing a new version of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T3 digital camera in Asia. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T33 is basically the same camera in a slighty re-styled form (curvier corners). Who knows why Sony seem to think that certain Asian countries like their camera corners to be more rounded? I agree with I4U - to me Sony seems to be muddying the global waters by introducing subtly changed variants of the same basic model.

“Benefiting from a year’s worth of development, in the overall Coolpix range, the 4800 includes a lot of the features designed for more professional models. Nikon’s best shot selector (BSS) and auto exposure best shot selector have been included to automate the picture taking process. The BSS causes a number of shots to be taken in rapid succession and the best one selected. Canon PowerShot A85PCMagazine have posted their review of the 4 megapixel Canon PowerShot A85.

“In Canon’s ever-growing arsenal of consumer-level compact digital cameras, the 4-megapixel Canon PowerShot A85 replaces the popular PowerShot A70. Unfortunately, the A85’s images suffer from a lack of sharpness. If you can find it cheap enough (it usually sells for under $300) it’s still a decent buy, but we recommend the Kodak EasyShare LS743 for its smaller size and sharper images.”

Canon PowerShot A95PCMagazine have just reviewed what is sure to be a popular digital camera, the 5 megapixel Canon PowerShot A95.

“The Canon PowerShot A95 is a fun, powerful 5-megapixel camera. Style-conscious point-and-shooters might want to look for something smaller, such as the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1, but if you go that route, be prepared to pay more for less. In addition to a host of features and manual controls, the A95 offers excellent image quality, making it a very good buy ($325 street).”
