Fujifilm Q1 DigitalPhotography reader Josh Waller has just published a review of the Fuji Q1 Digital, an ultra portable, digital compact camera with 2 megapixels, 4x digital zoom and a 1.5” LCD screen.

“It’s a nice looking camera, it’s a nice shape and size, and is very easy to use. Unfortunately it has a limited focal range (120cm - infinitely) and a poor “macro” mode, especially as flash is unavailable. The movie mode is also fairly dissapointing, I would have much prefered it to have sound. It is currently ?80 including VAT in UK shops or ?64 on-line (see kelkoo.co.uk for latest prices) - which is a reasonable to good price.”

Sony CyberShot DSC-F828LetsGoDigital have posted their review of the 8-megapixel Sony CyberShot DSC-F828 digital camera.

“The DSC-F828 remains a unique camera, concerning its design but also its equipment…The DSC-F828 is the leading camera at this moment. The camera is the first one to use the new RGB+E sensor technology, a technique we will undoubtedly hear more about in the very near future. The speed of the camera is impressive; in fact it is one of the fastest digital cameras of its class. If Sony does enable the next generation to fully use the capacity of the internal buffer then it will be very difficult to ignore a camera like this one.”

Konica Minolta DiMAGE XgDCResource have reviewed the ultra-thin Minolta DiMAGE Xg, another digital camera that was first announced at PMA 2004.

“The Xg is a pure point-and-shoot camera, with no manual controls at all. Photo quality is good, but you can expect vignetting, blurry corners, and an overall “fuzzy” look to your images. With that in mind, I see the Xg fitting in either a “second camera”, or for those who are doing small prints or web pictures (as the image quality issues will be apparent at larger sizes). The image quality issues are the price you have to pay for that unique lens design. All-in-all, I do recommend this camera, but do your research carefully before you buy, as there’s good competition.”

Leica Digilux 2Luminous Landscape have published the final part in a 3-part review of the Leica Digilux 2, with a second opinion by photographer Ben Lifson.

“Light, silent, unobtrusive, and - after the first few weeks of steady use - likely to lead to that relationship between photographer and instrument that we call intimate. It is likely to feel like a natural extension not only of the hand but of the eye, the mind, the sensibilities, the heart, the intuition and the imagination and as much a part of oneself as any of these.

However, with respect to major aspects of what can be called the genius, perhaps more precisely the poetic genius of the small camera as an instrument and as defined by the Leica camera since the first one appeared, the new Digilux 2 has disappointing flaws.”

Canon PowerShot Pro 1Luminous Landscape have reviewed the 8 megapixel Canon PowerShot Pro1, which was announced by Canon just before the start of the PMA 2004 trade show. Find out what Michael Reichmann thinks now that he has reviewed all the 8 megapixel competitors.

“The first thing that you notice when picking up the Pro1 is how small it is. If you’ve only seen it in pictures it appears much larger than it does in the “flesh”. But Canon has done a fine job on the ergonomics, and with only a few exceptions the controls are very well placed.

The body is of an all-new design, and it’s apparent - to me at least - that a lot of thought has gone into the human factors engineering.

As but one example, the button for switching between the EVF and the rear LCD is placed by itself on the left side of the camera, where the left hand can reach it. Most cameras place it somewhere on the rear panel close to a myriad of other buttons. “

Sony Cybershot DSC-V1DP-Now have reviewed the Sony DSC-V1 compact digital camera, which features 5 megapixel resolution, 4x optical zoom, flexible exposure control and an infrared laser hologram. The Sony DSC-V1 retails for £399 in the UK.

“Once you get used to it, the V1 is a fairly easy camera to use. However, the small viewscreen and scattered status information could be improved on. Creative control is very comprehensive and many controls are easily accessed without wading through menus. When you do need the menus, navigation can be tricky and that zoom lever is certainly unusual. The ease with which the flash pop-up mechanism can be prevented from deploying is a serious design flaw.”
