CNET have just posted their review of the Minolta DiMAGE A1.
“Following in the footsteps of Minolta’s Dimage 7 cameras, the A1 combines a 7X zoom lens and a 5-megapixel resolution with a mind-numbingly comprehensive feature set. New tricks include an unusual image-stabilization system, extensive autofocus improvements, and a tilting LCD. The A1’s image quality, while not outstanding, is also reasonably good. If this thing won’t do the job, you probably need a digital SLR.”

Once again Steves Digicams are first off the blocks with a review of a new digital camera. This time they’ve reviewed the Fuji FinePix S3000 digital camera, which features 3.24 effective million pixels, 6X Fujinon optical zoom and digital movie recording. The S300 uses xD-Picture Card (16MB to 512MB) storage and its lens focal length is equivalent to 38-228mm on a 35mm camera. The list price for the S300 is $399.95.
“While most digicams in its price range offer a 3X optical zoom, the S3000 gets you twice as close to your subject with its Fujinon 6X optical zoom lens. This not only offers you more versatility in composing your shots, but it also adds significantly to the “fun” factor of owning a digicam. The lens produces sharp images throughout its 38-228mm (in 35mm equivalence) zoom range, but with noticeable pincushioning at full telephoto and barrel distortion at full wide-angle.”

Perhaps of more interest to the average photographer than Luminous Landscape’s review of the Leaf Valeo 22 is the Digital Cameras Gift Guide 2003 from Photoxels, which recommends a digital camera for several different categories.

DCResource have posted a First Look at of a pre-production version of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1, which is due to be released in January 2004.
“If you take a stack of credit cards and pile them up to about 0.8 inches tall, you’ll have a good idea about the size of the DSC-T1. Sony was able to create an ultra-thin, 3X zoom camera by doing what Minolta has done for a few years now, with their DiMAGE X-series cameras. They place the lens elements down the body, rather than directly behind the lens opening. A prism redirects the light downward, which is where you’ll find the moving parts and the CCD sensor.
The T1’s body is all-metal, giving it a very solid feel. It’s also a little heavier than you’d expect. The important controls are also easy to reach.”

CNET have reviewed the HP Photosmart 735 digital camera, which has 3.2 megapixels and up to 15x zoom - 3x optical and 5x digital - from a Pentax precision lens for clear, crisp photo prints.
“If you don’t mind overly vivid colors, HP’s Photosmart 735 is a solid value. It offers a 3-megapixel resolution, a sharp Pentax 3X zoom lens, and a decent feature set that’ll please anyone looking for a simple point-and-shoot. Just be ready for a neon world. “

“Fujifilm’s FinePix A310 offers 3-megapixel resolution and a 3X zoom lens to folks looking for a snapshot camera that they can take anywhere. We liked the A310’s style and fairly compact size, but lackluster performance and mediocre images dampened our enthusiasm.”

Steves Digicams have posted their review of the Panasonic DMC-FZ10 Lumix ultrazoom digital camera.
“The most prominent feature of the FZ10 is its 12x Leica Vario Elmarit zoom lens, with a focal length coverage of 35-420mm in 35mm equivalence. That’s a lot of lens by anyone’s standards especially when the vast majority of other digicams only have 3x zooms. Anyone who has used a digicam with a long focal length zoom knows that these lenses really add to the overall “fun factor” of using a camera.”

Imaging Resource has posted a review of the Olympus CAMEDIA C-5060 Wide Zoom camera, an updated version of the popular Olympus CAMEDIA C-5050 model, with a wider-angle lens that is equivalent to a 27-110mm lens on a 35mm camera.
“Optical distortion on the C-5060 was a little higher than average at the wide-angle end, where I measured approximately 1.0 percent barrel distortion. (Average is 0.8 percent barrel distortion, which is still too high, IMHO.) The telephoto end fared much better though, as I couldn’t find even one pixel of pincushion or barrel distortion. Chromatic aberration was fairly low, showing only a few pixels of relatively faint coloration on either side of the res target lines. (This distortion is visible as a very slight colored fringe around the objects at the edges of the field of view on the resolution target.) The 5060’s lens also holds sharpness across the full frame better than most, with relatively little of the softening in the corners that I’ve come to expect from prosumer-grade digicam lenses. All in all, the 5060’s lens appears to be of higher than average quality.”

DCResource have posted a review of the Panasonic DMC-FZ10 Lumix ultrazoom digital camera.
“The FZ10 has great photo quality, it’s fun to use, and both its movie and burst modes are better than average. The large 2” LCD is a nice touch. Speaking of large, the FZ10 is a big camera—the biggest ultra zoom model out there. While some may disagree, I see the FZ10 as a “serious” camera, rather than a “take anywhere” camera.”

LetsGoDigital have posted a First Impressions report of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T1, which is due to be released in January 2004. LetsGoDigital got their hands on a pre-production version of the camera, resulting in this 6 page report with lots of product shots.
“The operation of the DSC-T1 is simple. The large screen contributes to the convenience. The settings and functions are shown well-organised and clear and staring at a small symbol belongs to the past. The expression “Golden Moment” refers to the moment one sees the captured image for the first time. On a digital camera it is usually the screen that shows the image. It may be obvious that experiencing the golden moment via a 2.5-inch high resolution screen has a lot more impact than via a small 1.5-inch screen!”

CNET have published their review of the 4 megapixel Pentax Optio S4 digital camera, an ultracompact model which is small enough to fit inside an empty Altoids tin.
“Essentially a clone of its predecessor, the Pentax Optio S, the 4-megapixel Optio S4 ultracompact sports a retractable 35mm-to-105mm (the 35mm-film equivalent), 3X optical zoom lens and offers interesting, beyond-the-basics options that won’t scare away beginners. While it won’t win any awards for shooting speed or image quality, the S4 gives snapshooters plenty of features in a chic, portable package.”

DCResource have reviewed the Fuji FinePix A310, which uses Fujifilm’s new 4th Generation Super CCD HR with 3.1 million effective pixels and 6.0 million recorded pixels. The Fuji FinePix A310 currently retails for around $250 / ?250.
“I hate to sound like a broken record, but noise has been a problem with all of Fuji’s recent SuperCCD HR-based cameras. That noise is what makes the A310’s photo quality worse than average. It’s too bad, as color and exposure are both very good, and purple fringing was not a problem. You definitely want to shoot in 3M mode, as 6M is just too noisy, reducing the detail in your photos (use it only when you know you’re making large prints).”
