DP-Now editor Ian Burley has published his initial thoughts on the new Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital SLR which was announced yesterday.
“Evolution, rather than revolution seems to be the theme of the 1D/II’s development. There are now half as many pixels again to play with as before and the full frame 24x36mm sensor appears to be a direct descendant of the previous 11.1MP CMOS unit developed by Canon in-house.
Apart from the introduction of 802.11b and g (up to 54Mbits/sec) wireless connectivity via an optional adapter, the main emphasis in Canon’s notes on the new 1D/II is the inclusion of Digital Photo Professional v.1.5 image processing software for faster RAW file image processing workflow.”

Introducing the EOS-1Ds Mark II - Canon’s new 16.7 Megapixel Digital SLR extends studio photographer’s options
Canon, world leader in photographic and imaging technology, is pleased to announce the launch of its new flagship camera: the 35mm full-frame 16.7 Megapixel EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital SLR. The camera is expected to appeal to professional studio and commercial photographers.
Featuring a full-frame 36 x 24mm 16.7 Megapixel CMOS sensor, the EOS-1Ds Mark II produces images with outstanding colour rendition and dynamic range. It has sufficient resolution to produce files which convert to 50MB uncompressed TIFF at 24 bit colour depth, now considered standard acceptable size by leading international photo agencies and stock libraries.
Replacing the award winning 11.1 Megapixel EOS-1Ds, the camera is powered by Canon’s second generation DIGIC II image processor and is capable of firing at 4 fps for bursts of up to 32 frames in JPEG, or 11 frames in RAW. An optional wireless adaptor (WFT-E1 - also released today) delivers high speed IEEE802.11b/g wireless LAN and 100 Megabit per second wired LAN support.
Besides the inherent advantages of digital, such as immediate turn-around and elimination of film costs, it is the flexibility of the EOS 35mm SLR format which Canon expects to appeal to many studio photographers. For the first time, medium format image quality combines with access to the world?s most extensive range of professional lenses, spanning from 14mm to 1200mm.
“The EOS-1Ds Mark II is a tremendous achievement, it represents the pinnacle of Canon?s digital camera technology,” said Malcolm Hills, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging in the UK and Ireland. “With its resolution, image quality, immediacy of wireless and the power and flexibility of SLR, the EOS-1Ds Mark II offers the first real digital alternative to medium format, which has so far been the choice for mainstream commercial studio and location work.”
The EOS-1Ds MKII will be available from November 2004 for £5999.99 RRP inc. VAT / EUROS 8699.99 RRP inc. VAT.

Nikon UK Press Release 16/09/04
Nikon are pleased to announce the D2X, a new professional digital SLR camera which delivers 12.4 effective megapixels for both high-precision and high-speed performance.
Since the launch of the D1 series in 1999, all Nikon digital SLR cameras from consumer-class to professional models, have utilized Nikon DX-format image sensors of the same size. Following in the footsteps of the D2H, the D2X provides the same performance and design innovations combined with a Nikon DX-format image sensor that delivers a higher pixel-count. Improved image quality is achieved by incorporating a new CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) image sensor with an effective pixel-count of 12.4 megapixels.
Added to this, shooting speed in continuous shooting mode has been increased by using a 4-channel output method with the improvement of the speed of transferring image data from the image sensor to a memory card. This improvement allows the D2X to capture 12.4 megapixel JPEG images or RAW image at a rate of 5 frames per second in continuous shooting mode. Continuous shooting at a rate of up to 8 frames per second is possible by using a High Speed Cropped function that crops the center of an image at 6.8 megapixel resolution.
In addition to the new dual-area image sensor, all image-processing functions have been either newly developed or refined. Tone characteristics have been improved with both analog and digital processing for optimum colour distribution. Moreover, the enhanced accuracy of digital processing in the ASIC provides smoother shading in gradual colour changes, important for subjects such as a blue sky with very subtle tone changes within the blue range.

DP-Now has published prices for the new Konica Minolta Dynax 7D, lenses and software which was announced earlier today, as well as their first impressions of the camera. The body-only Dynax 7D has a guide price of £1,149.99.
“Is a six megapixel entry into the market enough at this stage? And is a body-only price tag of ?1149 the right price? We haven’t been informed, so far, of any kit deals so it looks like the 7D plus the new 17-35mm f/2.8-4 (25.5-52.5mm equiv.) adds up to ?1569.98. Of course a lot of Konica Minolta’s target customers will already have a gadget-bag stuffed with Minolta-fit lenses.”

The World’s first*1 Digital SLR camera with revolutionary, body-integral, Anti-Shake technology
Konica Minolta is delighted to unveil the Konica Minolta Dynax 7D. This groundbreaking 6.1 Megapixels resolution, interchangeable lens digital camera is the World’s first digital SLR to contain a body integral CCD-Shift, “Anti-Shake” (camera shake compensation) technology that enhances picture quality, performance and improved handling characteristics.
The Dynax 7D is compatible with the full range* of Dynax AF lenses.
The Konica Minolta Dynax 7D is an interchangeable lens digital SLR camera that inherits many of the high specifications and much of the Award winning performance from the Dynax Series SLR cameras.
Introduced in 1985, the Minolta 7000; the first 35mm film SLR with body integrated AF system designed to use interchangeable AF lenses.
The new model’s high technological standards and heritage make it an intensely appealing camera.
The Dynax 7D is a digital SLR created using a broad range of sophisticated photographic technologies each developed with years of camera making experience and expertise.
The unique built-in CCD-Shift type “Anti-Shake” technology endows the new camera the first digital SLR to feature body-integral Anti-Shake function. The key benefit of Anti-Shake is it can support all Dynax AF lenses. *2 Anti-Shake technology allows photography with reduced blur due to camera shake, even when shooting dimly lit scenes or when using telephoto lenses and shooting macro subjects without the aid of flash or a tripod.

LoneStarDigital have posted their review of the Nikon D2H digital SLR.
“The D2H’s 4.1 megapixel LBCAST sensor produces in-camera Compressed Raw files running from 3.2 to 3.9 megabytes apiece. Compared to my Nikon D100’s 8.9 megabyte Raw files, I’ve more than doubled my in-camera memory card and computer hard drive picture storage capacity. It means I can store more than twice as many pictures per disk when I need to archive old pictures to CD-ROM. And it means faster transfers from my memory cards to my computer’s hard drive and faster file-open times in Nikon Capture and Adobe Photoshop software. All this with no real-world loss in picture quality.”

Konica Minolta Europe have revealed that the upcoming Konica Minolta Dynax 7 Digital DSLR will have a 6.1 megapixel CCD “with primary color filter and advanced image processing technology”.
“Konica Minolta’s basic thinking on image processing is to “capture and faithfully reproduce what is there.” To accomplish this, Konica Minolta believes four factors must be properly balanced - contrast, color reproduction, gradation reproduction, and noise reduction - and this is reflected in the Dynax 7 Digital/Maxxum 7 Digital. Its large CCD captures the full range of visual signals so that rich gradations and natural hues, such as the glistening of skin or the luster of hair, closely match what the photographer sees.”

Tom’s Hardware have posted their review of the 14 megapixel Kodak DCS Pro SLR.
“Products such as the Canon EOS 300D or the Nikon D70 have made digital SLR cameras accessible to the general public. Meanwhile, offerings for the professional market are limited. For example, there is not much beyond the Contax N Digital and the Canon EOS 1Ds in the pro sector. However, now that it’s technically possible to produce DSLRs that are no more bulky than traditional film SLRs, Kodak has come to the fore with its 14-million pixel monster, available in two models - the SLR/c (Canon mount) and SLR/n (Nikon mount).”

Connected Home Media have reviewed the Canon EOS 300D digital SLR.
“The Canon EOS Digital Rebel ($999) is a fabulous camera for photographers who desire more than the basics. If you have the time and inclination and curiosity to explore the myriad capabilities of this striking piece of equipment, I think you?ll find that very few cameras at this price point can match the professional image quality and sheer usability of the Digital Rebel. Best of all, in my testing of the Rebel, I found that I could swap out the included 18-55mm lens and affix my old lenses, meaning this is a camera that gives me the best of SLR functionality in the digital realm.”
