Konica Minolta Dynax 7Konica Minolta Europe have added some more information to their Konica Minolta Dynax 7 Digital DSLR teaser website. The third topic looks at the aspects of the Dynax/Maxxum series of film SLR cameras that the new digital model will inherit:

“Another important aspect of operability is how quickly and easily camera settings can be grasped by the user. To best serve this need, we introduced an effective layout of dials and levers that would allow operation with the fingertips alone while the camera was held, and we also developed the Navigation Display, which displays all camera information at once on a large LCD.”

Canon EOS 1D Mark IICNET have published their review of the new Canon EOS 1D MKII.

“Canon ups the ante with its 8-megapixel EOS-1D Mark II, the fastest-shooting digital SLR on the market. Made for magazine photographers covering news and sports, the Mark II also works well for portrait shooters who want a versatile, small-format digital camera. The Mark II replaces the EOS-1D—which was already at the top of its class—and makes improvements across the board.”

Nikon D2HCNET have posted their review of the Nikon D2H digital SLR.

“The D2H replaces Nikon’s D1H, and almost everything about it has been updated—from the camera body itself to the autofocus system. I recently used the Nikon D2H on a few assignments for Sports Illustrated and was impressed in many ways and disappointed in others. Shooting a game for SI means you can’t miss a shot, and the D2H delivers, with a fast shooting speed, a large buffer, and the longest-lasting battery of any digital SLR available.”

Nikon D70Photographic Magazine have published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.

“Exposures were accurate in most shooting situations we encountered using the 3D Color Matrix system, so we used the center-weighted and spot systems only to assure that they worked. The camera has a good dynamic range, and moderately contrasty scenes recorded with enough detail throughout that a little tweaking in Photoshop produced good detail from sunlight through open shade.”

We’ve recently had Bob Atkins’ Canon Rumours page, which have largely turned out to be true. Now it’s the turn of Lonestardigital.com to make some Nikon predictions - will they be as accurate? If so, then we should see a 15 megapixel Nikon D3, 8.25 megapixel Nikon D200 and an 8.2 megapixel Nikon D2X by the end of 2004.

That’s the question that NEAsia Online are asking, as both companies are set to launch cheaper DSLR cameras in the next couple of months. Some interesting tidbits of info about the new cameras are:

“Olympus has yet to disclose the details about its new single-lens reflex camera due to be released this autumn but it will likely offer the popular features of the E-1, such as automatic removal of dust from the charge coupled device when lenses are being changed. Komiya claims the new camera will offer unique capabilities that will set it apart from Canon and Nikon products.”

and:

“Pentax will likely distinguish its new camera from rival firms’ products by making it more compact and lighter. The price could be as low as 100,000 yen, as it will be manufactured in the Philippines.”

Canon EOS 20DNeed I say anymore?!

Wll, OK then :-) It looks as though Canon USA have dropped the ball by posting 3 images of the EOS 20D in their press room before the official press release (widely rumoured to be the end of this week). They’re currently available at the following URL (although I wouldn’t expect that page to be there for very long…):

Website: Canon USA Press Room

As you can see from the pictures, the 20D will support the same EF-S lens mount as the EOS 300D, and there is a new EF-S lens in the shape of the 17-85mm F4-5.6, which will also be image-stabilised.

As for the actual specification of the camera, the best that I can do is this non-official list from a thread on the DPReview forums:

EOS-20D
8.2 MegaPixels
DIGIC II
1:1.6x Crop
9 Point focusing
1/8000s Max Shutter speed
5fps Continuous speed
25 frame buffer
EF-s support
E-TTL II support
0.2sec startup time
50g lighter than 10D

Price US$1600 RRP
(Street price should be closer to 1300 they say)

August 20 - Announcement
September 20 - On Sale

Also 2 Lenses will be announced at launch of 20D
EF-s 10-22mm /f 3.5-4.5
EF-s 17-85mm /f 4-5.6 IS (Will be sold with 20D also like the 300D)

Bob Atkins has updated his Canon EOS Rumours page with, well, some more as yet unsubstantiated rumours, including the Canon PowerShot G6 news that PhotographyBLOG first reported a couple of weeks ago. There’s also a bit more “news” about the 20D:

“On the “20D” front, the only new rumors that may have credibility are that there may be 9 AF zones and that a new Digic II chip will reduce startup time from the current 1 or 2 seconds down to 0.2s (200 milliseconds), which would be nice. There’s also talk of a 4 way “joystick” button in the center of the rear command dial.”

CANON RECEIVES 2004 INSIGHT AWARD FOR MOST INNOVATIVE CMOS IMAGE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY

Canon EOS 10D Recognized as One of the First High-End Digital SLR Cameras To Take Advantage of the Innovative CMOS Technology

Lake Success, N.Y., August 12, 2004 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ), today announced that it has received Semiconductor Insights’s 2004 INSIGHT Award for Most Innovative CMOS Image Sensor Technology.

Semiconductor Insights (SI), the leader in technical and patent analyses of integrated circuits and structures, analyzes hundreds of devices each year from the world’s most innovative companies. Through its INSIGHT Awards program, SI recognizes devices or technologies that change the performance/cost equation of their respective segments with a new design or process innovation. For the awards program, SI tested the CMOS Image Sensor Technology built into the Canon EOS 10D, one of the first high-end SLRs to use a CMOS image sensor.

“Our analysis confirmed that Canon has achieved the sensitivity and shutter speed of a CCD technology in a low cost CMOS process. As well, Canon’s CMOS process delivers a distinct power advantage over competitive CCD plays,” said Lluis Paris, director of TECHinsights for Semiconductor Insights. “The result is an affordable and high quality SLR.”

Konica Minolta Dynax 7Konica Minolta Europe are doing a great job promoting their Konica Minolta Dynax 7 Digital DSLR, which will probably be officially unveiled at the Photokina show in Germany at the end of September. The company has just launched a new website to promote the new DSLR; the first topic is about the new anti-shake system:

Anti-Shake differs from the lens-based systems conventionally used in camcorders and digital cameras. Unlike such systems, which move a part of the lens to reduce the effects of camera shake, Anti-Shake stabilizes images by shifting the CCD sensor inside the camera body.

As a result, you can look forward to stable images with a wide array of Dynax/Maxxum lenses-not only with telephoto zoom lenses, but also with lens types that until now did not offer camera shake compensation, such as wide-angle fixed focal length lenses and macro lenses.

I’ve not been following this too closely, as I’m perfectly happy with my Canon EOS 10D (and won’t be upgrading), but the rumour about an 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D, complete with an EF-S lens and 1.6x sensor , seems to be the most prevalent one at the moment. Sigma UK Press Release 03/08/04

An advertisement for Sigma’s SD10 digital SLR has been cleared by the Advertising Standards Authority after a complaint from a magazine reader.

The ad, which showed a close-up colour photograph of a human eye, claimed “10.2 million pixels will open your eyes to the true colour reproduction and outstanding picture quality…Don’t compromise on quality. See the difference.”

The complainant, from Leicestershire, reckoned the photograph had been retouched with digital imaging software and claimed that the use of the image, without a suitable disclaimer, was misleading because readers would assume that the image represented picture quality achievable directly by the camera.

Nikon D70Digital Secrets have published their review of the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.

“The D70 may attract a huge audience of photographers, but not because it’s the least expensive dSLR on the block. Nikon’s philosophy is more along the lines of “Take dSLR features, ergonomics, operation speed, image quality, flexibilities, technologies and customer satisfaction to the next level. Then deliver it at the price people can afford.”
