Canon 40DLuminous Landscape have reviewed the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera, which offers a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 6.5 fps continuous shooting and 3 inch LCD screen.

“My time with the 40D was short, but I found that shooting about a thousand frames over a long weekend was all I needed to be able to draw some preliminary conclusions. These are, in brief, that the image quality of the 40D is excellent, continuing the industry-leading results that Canon has offered for the past 5-6 years. I didn’t see any breakthrough in low noise at the highest ISOs, but as with the EOS 5D ISO 400 is essentially noiseless and can be used as an everyday speed. Noise doesn’t really become an issue until ISO 1600 and even then isn’t that objectionable.”

Canon 40DDigital Outback Photo have started a diary review of the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR camera, which offers a 10.1 megapixel sensor, 6.5 fps continuous shooting and 3 inch LCD screen.

“Same comment as for the Canon 1D Mark III: Histogram shows now all 3 channels and the luminance histogram at the same time. So far so good. Unfortunately it is hard to see whether the data clip because the background of the histogram is dark gray and the rest on the LCD is black. It would be much easier to check the histogram if there would be a clear visible line around the histogram area.”

“You can even select the JPEG + RAW mode and capture both image formats at the same time. You can set your own JPEG compression ratio as well as vary the image sharpness, chose one of five color matrix (color space) settings and even upload your own custom tone curves. “The Olympus E-510 is a very capable camera. I enjoyed using it and it gave good results despite the weather. The build quality is good and it handles well. The Turbo III processor has ensured that noise remains at a minimium as much as possible and the noise test was a great surprise.”

FujiFilm S5 ProThom Hogan has reviewed the FujiFilm S5 Pro digital SLR camera.

“The one thing that Fujifilm does talk about a lot in its marketing materials for the S5 Pro is how much better the noise tendencies are. I have good news and bad news on that front. The good news is that, as I’ll report later, the noise levels in the S5 Pro are reasonably well controlled. The bad news is that it comes as a result of the RP Processor Pro imaging ASIC’s noise reduction routines. Noise reduction applied downstream from the sensor (in the imaging ASIC or in raw conversion software) always tends to take away detail as it does its job.”

“The colors are vibrant, tonal transitions smooth and detailed. The kit lenses work much better than their size or price would indicate.
