Strong demand for the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR (pictured) saw Nikon post a profit of £30.2 million in the three months to December 31, reports the Scottish newspaper Edinburgh Evening News (found via CameraTown).
“Last year, managing director Makoto Kimura said Nikon was increasing production capacity for the D70, with a view to eventually halting production of film-dependent compact cameras for which demand is sliding. He said Nikon aimed to sell one million digital SLRs in the business year to March 2005, compared to about 300,000 in 2003/4.”

Professional photographer and Nikon user Thom Hogan has just posted a very comprehensive review of the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR. Well worth reading if you are interested in this camera.
“Overall, noise handling on the S3 Pro is state-of-the-art and an improvement over the already quite good S2 Pro. Since many people use the S3 Pro as a JPEG camera and JPEG artifacts can get produced by and interact with noise in very bad ways, this is very good news. Indeed, I’ll just simply say it here: if you only shoot JPEG, I don’t know that there’s another DSLR available that can outdo the S3 Pro in image quality.”

Imaging Resource have posted their review of the new 6 megapixel Konica Minolta Dynax 7D digital SLR camera.
”...the Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D is easily one of the most eagerly-awaited digital cameras in the last year or so. Many thousands (millions?) of Minolta film SLR owners have been waiting and hoping for a digital SLR to use with their extensive collections of (typically excellent) Minolta optics. Now that the Maxxum 7D has arrived, their wait is over, and the obvious quality and features of the new model appear to justify the long wait.”

DIWA member website Steves Digicams have posted their review of the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II DSLR.
“How do you improve on what was widely regarded as the best studio/commercial dSLR available, the EOS 1Ds? The was the challenge faced by Canon’s engineers, and they responded with the 1Ds Mark II. The most touted improvement is the Mark II’s 50% increase in resolution, from 11.1-megapxels to 16.7-megapixels; it produces whopping full frame images of 4992 x 3328 pixels compared to the 1Ds 4064 x 2704. In addition to resolution, the Mark II offers improved responsiveness and a greater range of sensitivity.”

Photo-i have concluded their interactive review of the 16 megapixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital SLR.
“Would I buy one? Yes, without a second thought (I can explain to my wife later – a bunch of roses helps). It’s expensive and there is nothing else that competes with it on the market. It is absolutely superb. Just in case anyone is wondering why I put price as both a Pro and Con. The pro reason is that you would hate an Editor or Art director to turn up on an assignment and say I have one of those, the chances are they won’t at this price. The cons are, £5000 is a lot of money to spend on a camera without lens. But then again if I were a mini-cab driver I guess I wouldn’t bat an eye-lid at spending £10,000 to £15,000 on a new car (I’m glad I am not a cab driver really)”

DIWA member website LetsGoDigital have just posted their review of the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro digital SLR.
“The brightness is excellent and the colour edges are no problem. The extended dynamic range is obviously more than just an advertising stunt. It offers a solution in certain circumstances. The Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro might not be that much better than for example the Canon EOS 20D or the Nikon D100 but it features its own special characteristics. It seems an exceptionally fine camera for portrait, wedding and nature photographers. Only, Fujifilm ought to change and improve the storage speed. That seems to be the one disappointment we found on this camera.”

Imaging Resource have posted their review of the Canon EOS-1D Mark II DSLR.
“The Canon EOS-1D was a groundbreaking digicam when it was first announced in late 2001, and held its ground amazingly well against the competition in all the time since then. In January of 2004, Canon announced the EOS-1D Mark II, a radical update of the original 1D, doubling its resolution, while simultaneously increasing its continuous shooting speed slightly to a blazing 8.5 frames/second, and cutting image noise in the process.”

CNET have posted their review of the 14 megapixel Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n digital SLR camera.
“The Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n is an improved version of the earlier DCS Pro 14n, the company’s Nikon F-mount digital SLR with a 13.5-megapixel CMOS sensor that’s the size of the 35mm film format (24x36mm). The SLR/n uses a redesigned version of that sensor, which achieves higher ISO sensitivities and produces less image noise than its predecessor. But the SLR/n, like the 14n before it, is a sluggish performer that’s best suited to relatively static applications such as commercial, portrait, or architectural photography. “

PCMagazine have posted their review of the new 6 megapixel Konica Minolta Dynax 7D digital SLR camera.
“Although the 6-megapixel Maxxum 7D is pricey relative to the competition, its excellent construction, outstanding ergonomics and handling characteristics, and built-in image stabilization will have most users agreeing that it was well worth the wait and money. We wish its built-in flash performed more consistently and that Konica Minolta offered a more appropriate standard zoom lens, but apart from this there is a lot to like about this new D-SLR.”

Olympus are set to release “several” new DSLRs during 2005, along with no less than 7 new e-system lenses, at least according to a recent report on the Photo Imaging Council of Australia website. Presumably there will be a replacement for the ageing (in digital terms anyway) E-1, and maybe 2 models to fit in between the entry-level E-300 (pictured) and the new top-end professional model (that’s just my educated guess though). Great news for all current E-system owners as Olympus continues to invest heavily in its DSLR product-range.
I’m not sure if the Olympus product manager for Australia who spilled the beans is going to be in trouble or not for this :-)
“Our aim is to aggressively continue our growth in the DSLR category by investing heavily in our E-series range. 2005 will see Olympus building on the success of the E-1 and E-300 cameras with the launch of several new DSLR bodies and seven more digital lenses,” said Austin Kazami, Olympus DSLR Product Manager.”

DCResource have posted their review of the new 6 megapixel Konica Minolta Dynax 7D digital SLR camera.
“Speaking of taking pictures, the photo quality was a bit of a weak point at first, but I quickly found a workaround for that issue. While some will disagree with my assessment that the 7D’s images were too soft, I found that bumping up the in-camera sharpening by one stop made things a lot more tolerable. Otherwise image quality was just as you’d expect from a digital SLR: smooth and noise-free, even at high ISOs. And, as expected, camera performance is excellent in all areas, including in burst mode. The one exception is the speed at which the 7D reads and writes to the memory card—it takes quite a while. Along those lines, real USB 2.0 High Speed support would’ve been nice.”

DCViews have posted their review of the new 6 megapixel Pentax *ist DS DSLR.
“We took some images with a Nikon D70 with the AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm standard zoom alongside the Pentax *ist Ds and noticed that colours on the D70 appeared to be slightly warmer in tone than on the Pentax. Contrast on the *ist Ds appeared to be a little higher as well, whereas purple colours tended to shift towards blue. Remember though that purple is one of the trickiest colours to render in a natural way, even conventional film has trouble recording this as our eyes see it. Also every brand of digital camera renders different colours in slightly different ways, whereas different lenses can show a slight difference in colour tone with some lenses being warmer than others.”

Photo-i have started an interactive review of the 16 megapixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital SLR.
“The Canon EOS 1Ds Mk II is a full frame 36 x 24mm (35mm film full frame) digital camera, with a 16.70 megapixel CMOS sensor. This will produce a 47.5mb file, a good selling point for professional users and the seriously rich hobbyist. For the editorial, stock and commercial photographer this may be the only camera a photographer will ever need. At just over £5000 it has to deliver a lot of quality, so does this camera live up to expectations? Read on and find out.”
