Pentax have released a new firmware version for the new 6 megapixel Pentax *ist DS DSLR.
Version 1.01 contains the following change:
At the long time exposure situation such as astronomical photography, green noise might be generated partially on the image when the noise reduction is turned on.
This phenomenon only occur rarely under special shooting condition such as starry sky, and will never occur at the general situation that we are assuming.
The version 1.01 will minimize this phenomenon as much as possible for the customer who use *istDS for this purpose.

DIWA member website Steves Digicams have posted a review of the new 6 megapixel Pentax *ist DS DSLR.
“The first thing that strikes you about the *ist DS is its diminutive (for an SLR) size. Weighing in at just 2 pounds including batteries and DA 18-55mm lens, it is the smallest and lightest dSLR currently available. Pentax reduced its size by switching to an SD memory card versus the CF card of the *ist D, and rearranging the camera’s controls. Its small size does not diminish its ergonomic qualities, however; the *ist DS is comfortable to hold and its revamped controls are both logically organized and easy to operate.”

DIWA member website Steves Digicams have posted their first look at the long-delayed DSLR, the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro.
“The S3 Pro makes full use of Fujifilm’s extensive color film expertise. Rather than force photographers to shoot in RAW mode and spend time on an extensive workflow process, Fujifilm has introduced Film Simulation Modes, dynamic range presets and color space selection. Once the photographer is familiar with these settings, they will be able to produce JPEG images straight from the camera, which require no post-production. Photographers can choose between smooth, extended tonality and natural skin tones, or the dramatic impact of highly saturated color. The Film Simulation Mode is the equivalent of changing film type to suit shooting conditions, and achieves this at the touch of a button.”

DPReview have posted their usual extensive review of the new Konica Minolta Dynax 7D DSLR.
“In use the 7D proved to be an excellent ‘photographic tool’, it feels good to hold, it’s easy to change settings (thanks to the fact that almost all the major settings have external buttons / levers) and the camera feels responsive in use. The 7D is one of those cameras which I enjoyed using and encourages you to shoot more and experiment more (the availability and access to manual controls achieves this).”

Following PhotographyBLOGs recent exclusive story about the banning of cameras on the New York transport system, Gizmodo are reporting that a photographer was prevented from boarding an El Al flight at the weekend, simply because he was carrying a Canon EOS 1Ds and an Apple IBook.
“When I asked them why it wasn’t publicly communicated, they answered that ‘they can’t have a list with all the permitted and prohibited cameras.’ Same with the laptop, according to the security dude the 1Ds and the iBook are too complex to be taken apart.”

The competitively priced 8 megapixel Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR (pictured) is a great alternative to the Nikon D70 and Canon EOS 300D, and the Pentax * ist DS will please everyone who owns a cupboard full of Pentax lenses (both new and old). PCWorld have compared these two new DSLR cameras in a head-to-head test:
“The Olympus is easily the more eye-catching of the two. There’s no hump on the top of the camera—the signature mark of all SLRs for the past 45 years. Olympus moved the viewfinder’s optical path to the left side of the body, which makes the camera slightly shorter than most other digital SLRs. Though it isn’t a significant savings in size, the flat-top design does seem to slide in and out of an overstuffed camera bag more easily. Our shipping Olympus has a polished look and feel. Its solid, bricklike body feels as if you could pound nails with it. The dials turn smoothly and easily, and the body fits firmly in two hands.”

DCResource have posted their review of the new, competitively priced Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR.
“It takes about 2 seconds for the E-300 to “warm up” before you can start taking pictures. While that’s comparable to the Digital Rebel, the Nikon D70 is ready to go instantly. While I wasn’t wowed by its autofocus speeds, the E-300 focuses fairly quickly, and faster than most fixed-lens cameras out there. In low light, the EVOLT’s flash-based AF illuminator allows it to focus in almost total darkness—very nice. As for shutter lag, there really isn’t any. That’s why you’re interested in a digital SLR, right?”

Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce pricing and availability for its highly anticipated D2X professional digital SLR camera. The camera will begin shipping on February 25, 2005 with a suggested street price of $4999.95 (MSRP $6299.95).

Nikon have today released a new firmware version for the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR.
Issues addressed with D70 firmware B version 1.03
When the mode dial was set to an exposure mode (P, S, A, or M) and II selected for the Color mode setting in the Custom item of the Optimize image menu, and then an option other than Custom (such as Portrait) selected from the Optimize image menu, JPEG images captured after this procedure were recognized as having the Adobe RGB color space when opened in applications with a color-management function such as Adobe Photoshop. This problem has been corrected.

DPReview have posted their review of the new, competitively priced Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR.
“Although not a direct competitor to the Canon EOS 20D the E-300 does become the second only eight megapixel digital SLR and so comparisons will be made (and can be interesting). At ISO 100 the two are virtually indistinguishable, from ISO 200 to 400 the 20D looks cleaner although it’s a moderate difference. At ISO 800 the 20D begins to look much cleaner, and at ISO 1600 there’s almost no comparison, a large jump in noise is apparent in the E-300 sample. Visually the EOS 20D at ISO 3200 doesn’t look that much noisier than the E-300 at ISO 800.”

Steves Digicams have posted their usual extensive review of the new Konica Minolta Dynax 7D DSLR.
“The first thing that strikes you about the 7D is the multitude of controls that sprout from its body, so many, in fact, that there is no room for a top-mounted data LCD. The benefit is that many settings that on other dSLR’s require wading through menus or removing the camera from eye level to change are manipulated directly via a dedicated dial or button. Photographers with roots extending deep into the 35mm film era will appreciate the extent to which the 7D’s controls are brought to its surface.”
