FujiFilm FinePix S3 ProShootSmarter have posted a first look at the long-delayed DSLR, the Fuji FinePix S3 Pro, including some sample images that you can download.

“Watching the evolution of digital technology is really fun and fascinating and we’re glad to be able to bring you info on items that raise the bar.  The S3 offers the next generation of digital capture that moves us much closer to film-like images and is one very impressive camera. The secret is in the chip using their revolutionary"SR” technology that Fuji has been quietly putting into their consumer / prosumer cameras like the little F700 and the S20.  These SR light receptors gather highlight and shadow and even some midtone values that the “main” CCD sensor misses, then applies the new data back to the file as it’s processed. This means we get another stop of highlight info and another stop of shadow info so that now digital capture will collect more light info than color trans film does, but it still has a ways to go to catch up with the 10+ stops that color neg film can gather in one exposure.”

FujiFilm FinePix S3 ProLuminous Landscape have posted a report on the long-delayed DSLR, the FinePix S3 Pro.

“As I review what I’ve written, I see that one could draw from it an overall negative conclusion about the Fuji S3. That certainly wasn’t my intent. I always was impressed with the image quality of the S2 Pro. But, I have to say that the extra year that Fuji took to release the S3 because of the chip redesign appears to have somewhat blindsided them in the competitive marketplace.

List prices for mid-range DSLR in early 2005 are around U.S. $1,500 from Nikon, Minolta and Canon. With a MSRP of a thousand dollars higher than this for the S3, one has to ask what it is that one is paying a premium for. That’s hard to see. The shooting speed isn’t the fastest, the size is larger than competitive bodies, the viewfinder isn’t as large or bright as some, and the colour rendition isn’t as accurate as that from several competitors.”

Canon EOS 300DDigital Outback Photo has updated it’s diary-like review of the Canon EOS 300D digital SLR with some new entries on very long exposures, purchase of new Canon lenses (17-40mm f/4 and 50mm f/1.8) and a list of fors and againsts.

“One of the problems you will encounter with long exposures is what is commonly referred to as Hot Pixels. Hot pixels are sensor pixels that turn white during a very long exposure. Because the 300D, and all other Canon DSLR cameras, uses a CMOS sensor it exhibits a much lower number of hot pixels than digital cameras using a CCD sensor. However, you will still get hot pixels during long exposures, although far less than with a CCD camera.”

Olympus E-300Photo Tidbits have posted their review of the new Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR (found via digicamera.net).

“While it is too early to draw definite conclusions, I can already say I’m mighty pleased with its performance.

First of all, the lens seems to be optically good in the whole focal length range. There is no objectionable softening of image in corners (just a tad at wide angle), no visible chromatic aberration. At the widest angle the zoom shows an average degree of spherical aberration (barrel) — 1% or less; not impressive, but not really bad.”

Kodak DCS Pro SLR/nKodak have released a new firmware version for their DCS range of digital SLR cameras, including the 14 megapixel DCS Pro SLR/n (pictured).

The new firmware offers the following changes:
- Fixed a problem that occasionally caused some Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems to restart when capturing bursts of images directly to the host computer while tethered via the IEEE 1394 interface.
- Fixed an intermittent problem that generated incorrect header data in DCR files that prevented the images from being opened by Photo Desk.
- Fixed a problem that caused green and magenta blocking in some ERI JPEG images. Although ERI JPEG image quality is improved when viewing/processing images using ERI FFM version 1.0, some artifacts will still be present. Further artifact reduction will be achieved when using ERI JPEG images from firmware version 5.3.0 with ERI FFM version 2.0 (which was not yet available at the time of this release).
- Added a Manual Mirror Prerelease option that uses the shutter button to raise the mirror and the OK button to open the shutter and capture the exposure.

Canon EOS 20DSportsShooter.com, which is orientated towards professional sports photography, have today published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.

“Is this a camera body I would buy INSTEAD of a pro - level model? If I were making my living in sports and news photography, probably not. If my livelihood depended on my equipment, I think I would tend to learn toward something that would withstand the use (or is it abuse?) that Sports Shooters and PJ’s subject their gear to.

However this is a great camera, make no mistake about that, one that would work well as a primary body for many photographers working out there. Even for PJ’s, its size and weight make it appealing for many situations and uses. For the money, there is not a better deal out there for Canon shooters.”

Nikon D2HRob Galbraith is reporting that the Nikon D2H DSLR seems to have been drastically reduced in price in the USA. You can pick up Nikon’s 4MP digital SLR for under $2000.

“While we’ve not received official confirmation from Nikon USA yet, we have heard from three reputable U.S. dealers of Nikon pro gear. Each indicates that the street price of the camera - complete with battery, charger and other basic accessories - is now about US$1999 or thereabouts, down from US$3000-US$3200 just last week.”

Canon EOS 20DCreativepro.com have published a review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.

“The most noticeable change in image quality with the 20D (in addition to increased resolution) is more-aggressive default settings. Following in the footsteps of the Rebel, the 20D comes pre-configured to perform a little more sharpening than the 10D, and its images consequently receive a boost in contrast. The camera comes equipped with a number of parameter sets, and it’s easy enough to change and customize them to yield images with more or less processing.”

Konica Minolta Dynax 7DThe Slovenian website e-fotografija have posted a review in English of the Konica Minolta 7D DSLR.

So far I can only tell good things about the AS system, at least until it is more thoroughly tested and more user’s opinions are created. It really is quite amazing. Konica Minolta has once again proved with this AS system that they are ambitious and can be counted on. This is one of the most obvious features that will bring new customers, especially those Minolta users who have been waiting for so long. A wider choice of cameras is good for everybody. And just a reminder for newcomers to the DSLR world: you are buying a system, not only a body as in a compact class digicams.

“After the first day it is clear that the SLR/n is a much more interesting product than the 14n. We can hardly wait to use the SLR/c as we then can shoot with the same lenses on the 1Ds and the SLR/c. We consider the SLR/n a comeback of Kodak as a major player in the pro DSLR market.”
