Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital SLRLuminous Landscape has published a review of the new Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II Digital SLR which was announced last month.

“In the end, the 1Ds Mark II stands alone, (for the moment at least), as the camera with the combination of highest image quality and fastest handling available. There are faster cameras and there are higher resolution digital solutions (various 22 Megapixel backs, and soon the Mamiya ZD 22 MP camera). But for the money, the size, the versatility, and the performance, the Canon 1Ds Mark II is currently king of the hill.”

Canon PowerShot G6DCViews have today reviewed the new 7 megapixel Canon PowerShot G6.

“With Canon being one of the leading names in today’s industry, it should come as no surprise that the images delivered by the new Canon G6 are truly superb. Once again Canon have succeeded in making a good camera even better. Images taken with the by now familiar f2.0-3.0, 7.2 - 28.8mm (35-140mm eq.) Canon zoom lens are bright, sharp and properly exposed with nicely saturated colours without being over the top. Pictures taken with flash indoors show an even illumination of the subject, and if you feel the light is still too harsh you can power the flash down for a slight fill-in effect. The camera delivers very smooth images with very little noise at ISO 50 or 100 and even at ISO 400 noise is not really an issue, as images remain perfectly useable.”

Canon EOS 20DPhoto District News have published a review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.

“The bottom line on the 20D (for those of you who hate suspense) is that it’s a solid camera with a broad market appeal. The consumer nature of the camera makes its application limited to those looking for a backup body or to those pros who don’t need the higher pixel counts or speed of something like a Canon 1Ds Mark II or Nikon D2X. Chances are though that if you need those features, then the 20D is off of your list and you’re looking elsewhere.”

Nikon D70It’s the time of year when awards start to be handed out, and first off the blocks is Popular Photography magazine, who have made the 6 megapixel Nikon D70 DSLR their Camera of the Year.

“The question for ‘04 was how quickly a camera maker would seize on this revolutionary fervor, and add some sophistication, features, fine-tuning, and, well, “maturity” to what the D Rebel had wrought…without pushing the price to a pro-caliber level.

Nikon worked fast, and we had our hands on a nearly completed D70 in time for our May issue. As that article and our lab test of a production model in our June issue showed, Nikon got it right.”

Olympus E-300The fourth (and hopefully final) preview of the new Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR (UK price £699 with a lens) is from Steves Digicams. Seems like all there was some kind of embargo on publishing E-300 previews!

“Lenses that are smart, that talk with the camera about their specific optical designs and imaging information. Lenses, particularly zoom lenses have some distortion. This is true of all manufacturers. Zuiko Digital Lenses store data in the header portion of the digital file allowing for software-assisted correction of anomalies including pin cushion and barrel distortion.

Shoot wide open or stopped all the way down and achieve superior results over 35mm film based lenses. Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses are about three times the resolution of ordinary film based lenses.”

Olympus E-300The third preview (!) of the new Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR (UK price £699 with a lens) is from Imaging Resource.

“The E-300’s user interface is similar to those of the Olympus C-series digicams, with a multi-page menu system that’s easy to navigate. The standard Olympus Shortcut menu screen has been omitted, made unnecessary by the many single-purpose buttons for major functions on the camera body. The menu system is simple to navigate, even for users new to the interface. Menu layouts are straightforward. A Mode dial on top of the camera changes capture modes quickly. Once you get into the Record menu, options are organized by function, accessed by a series of tabs along the left side of the screen. This layout lets you quickly skip to the options you need without sifting through pages of menu items.”

“The rear of the E-300 features no less than thirteen more buttons, although it sounds daunting the use of these buttons to change camera settings becomes second nature, especially as they integrate nicely with the information display on the LCD monitor. For instance, press the ISO button and ISO is highlighted on the information display (or if off a dedicated selection screen is shown), now just turn the main dial to select ISO. In addition every adjustment (apart from flash mode) is repeated on the viewfinder LCD, so once you get used to the position of controls it’s easy to adjust settings without removing your eye from the viewfinder.”

Olympus E-300DCResource have published a preview of the new Olympus Olympus E-300/Evolt DSLR (UK price £699 with a lens).

“The Olympus EVOLT E-300 (it’s just called the E-300 outside of the U.S.) is the first consumer digital SLR to use the FourThirds system. The FourThirds system (co-developed by Olympus, Fuji, and Kodak) was first seen on the Olympus E-1, which was released last year. The E-300 takes many of the same features used on the E-1, removes a few manual controls, slows things down a bit, and boosts the resolution from five to eight million pixels. The E-300 has a rather unique design (to say the least), and build quality isn’t quite as nice as the E-1.”

After Mike Johnston’s and Michael Reichmann;s “exchange” about full frame vs APS sized sensors last week, now it’s the turn of Bob Atkins to give his view on the future of the digital SLR.

“What will the DSLR lineup look like in 5 years time? I’m guessing a pro level DSLR, 36x24mm sensor and 24MP, a mid level DSLR 36x24mm sensor with 16MP, a prosumer level DSLR 36x24mm with a 12MP sensor and a consumer level DSLR, which maybe will still have a 22x15mm (APS-C) sensor but with 8MP. Each level will not only have more pixels, but more features, faster frame rates, buffer sizes etc. Prices around $4000-$5000, $2500-$3000, $1200-$1500 and $500-$750 respectively (in terms of 2004 dollars).”

Luminous Landscape have published a review by fine-art phographer Pete Myers of the unique black and white Kodak DCS 760m digital SLR (yes, black and white, no colour!).

“Its is very sad for me to see yet another flag ship product from Kodak being overlooked and tossed aside in an increasingly desperate corporate attempt to chase pixel counts and price points - and NOT image quality and professional build features. Kodak walked away from professional camera bodies after the DCS 760 series (which were based on the Nikon F5). Then they walked away from medium format backs before they had ever developed a large area sensor to support true medium format work. And now it appears that they have also walked away from DCS monochromes.”

Canon EOS 20DDPReview have published their review of the 8 megapixel Canon EOS 20D DSLR.

“The real question is how many current digital SLR owners will see real value upgrading to the EOS 20D. It’s certainly a better camera than the 10D (faster, better AF, more features) however when you see side-by-side image comparisons it becomes clear that the increase from six to eight megapixels doesn’t make a very large difference to resolution and for the majority wouldn’t add any more value to their photographs.”
