Snapixel Magazine, which started out as an online publication dedicated to great photography by up-and-coming talents, is now looking to go into the print world. To this end, the editors have launched a Kickstarter campaign asking interested readers to back the project with donations. They want to raise at least $6,000 to cover the costs of printing and distribution, and you can pledge $5 or more to help them make this happen. “We’ve done some test runs, and the magazine really shines in print,” says marketing and advertising director Emily Sands.  “We want to be able to reach a wider audience and expose our featured artists to everyone everywhere!”

At WestLicht’s latest auction, an 88-year-old Leica camera from the 0-Series was sold for a record €1,320,000 (approx. $1,900,000), making it the world’s most expensive camera by a very wide margin. In 1923, Leitz made a small batch of less than three dozen prototypes (various sources put the exact number of units produced between 25 and 31) to test the waters, and this batch is known as the Leica 0-Series. The camera that went under the hammer on Saturday is in fully working condition, and is the only camera known with ‘Germany’ engraved on the top plate, WestLicht Auction says. The starting price was €200,000, and the auctioneer expected the item to sell for up to €450,000; so the hammer price was a massive surprise to everyone, including the experts.

Lomographer Francesco Capponi has created what he calls the ‘Pinhegg’ - a pinhole camera made of an egg. “Since I started pin-holing the world, I have had the strong desire to make a special camera, with the purpose of shooting just one photograph,” he says. “The purpose was to sacrifice the camera in the process of photo creation – I wanted the camera to become the photograph.” It took him a lot of time and effort to produce the ‘Pinhegg’, but through trial and error he “finally found the right recipe” for his invention. If you want to know how he did it - and how you can make your own - visit the website below.

Five months after discovering vulnerability in Canon’s Original Data Security System, ElcomSoft apparently found a similar problem with Nikon’s Image Authentication System. The system enables users to determine whether an image has been altered after capture, providing proof of image authenticity for the purposes of law enforcement, insurance, and so on. ElcomSoft claims to have identified a major flaw in the manner the secure image signing key is being handled, allowing forged images to pass validation with Nikon Image Authentication Software. “The signing cryptographic key can be extracted from the camera and used to sign any picture, genuine or not,” the company said in a statement, adding that “all past and current Nikon cameras supporting Image Authentication are affected, including Nikon D3X, D3, D700, D300S, D300, D2Xs, D2X, D2Hs, and D200 digital SLRs”.

It’s 1 April today, and some companies are issuing mock press releases in celebration of April Fool’s Day - here are some we have found entertaining. Lomography has announced that they are launching their first-ever official iPhone app - there’s even a ‘Buy Now in Apps Store’ button on the app’s home page that actually works (well, in a way…). Then we got word of a cartridge with a flexible sensor that can be inserted in any old 35mm film camera to give it a new life in the digital age - we actually wish this one was for real! Our favourite was perhaps 1001NoisyCamera’s announcement that it had just been bought by AOL and subsequently renamed The Noisyngton Post…

British music producer Bibio has partnered up with Lomography for a project that celebrates the release of his new album, ‘Mind Bokeh’. The idea of bokeh is infused throughout the kaleidoscopic new album – particularly in the sound and artwork. In Bibio’s own words; “I’m a lover of photography so I discovered the word bokeh through a photographer friend. The word sounded unusual in itself which attracted me, but I liked the idea of applying its context to something other than photography.” His Lomography collaboration starts with a series of his shots using Lomography’s Diana F+ camera and equipment, and a guide to achieving the bokeh effect on film. For more information on the project, follow the link below.
