“I was visiting a Tibetan refugee camp in Nepal hoping to get some video footage with a colleague, but a ban on video inside the monastery forced us to pull out still cameras. Stepping inside the main room to watch the young monks chant their morning meditations, we were struck by the ancient light that filters through ornate windows. The monastery is part of a long-established and relatively wealthy refugee camp in Nepal and most of these boys are sent by their parents at a young age. They are monks, but walking out the front door they play cricket, talk on mobile phones and are interested in Nike sneakers like most boys their age. That said though, there’s a lot we can learn from the spiritual discipline of even these young boys. The mindless entertainment and material fluff that we allow to crowd our lives is, in part at least, responsible for the void that westerners try to fill in their obsession for Tibetan Buddhism.”

I have now returned from a hectic 2 week trip to the island of Tenerife, the Vendée region of France, seaside port of La Rochelle and the Northern town of Lille. And I thought this was supposed to be a holiday! From tomorrow, PhotographyBLOG will be back up to full speed, once I’ve read all my email / spam. For anyone who’s interested, this photo of the sun setting over a Tenerife mountain was taken with the new HP R818 camera (in the shops soon).

PhotographyBLOG is taking a much needed break - I am away in Tenerife on business for a few days, and then I’m off to watch the Tour de France cycle race. Normal service will resume around Monday July 11th. There is still plenty to do in my absence, with the Gallery, Competitions and Forums all open for business - only the News section of the site will be rather quiet. And if you email me, please don’t expect a reply until I get back. Until then, have a good couple of weeks, and aurevoir!

The Pentax *ist DS is an entry-level 6 megapixel digital SLR that is also one of the smallest and lightest DSLRs currently available. Highlights of the Pentax *ist DS include a large 2 inch LCD screen, 11 point auto-focus system, interchangeability with a wide selection of existing Pentax lenses and a range of different picture modes for beginners and experienced photographers alike. At a current street price around £650 / $850 / €850 with the Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL lens, the *ist DS represents Pentax’s attempt to capture a slice of the entry-level DSLR market, and is subsequently competing with the likes of the Canon EOS 350D, Nikon D70s and Olympus E-300. Pentax themselves have recently announced an even cheaper version, the *ist DL. So is the Pentax *ist DS a good choice in what is rapidly becoming a saturated sector of the digital SLR market? Read my review to find out.

The Jobo Giga Vu Pro is a direct competitor to the Epson P-2000 portable storage device that I enthusiastically reviewed back in March. With a 3.8 inch colour LCD screen, 40Gb or 60Gb hard drive, built-in card slot for Compact Flash / Microdrive memory cards, support for video and music playback, and the ability to playback RAW files, the Jobo Giga Vu Pro matches the better known Epson device. Jobo haven’t stopped there though - they have added a host of pro-level options to the Giga Vu Pro, including WiFi support, Levels display, Channels display, a touch screen for entering information, PictBridge compatibility and support for RAW files from over 70 different cameras. Similar in size and weight, can the Jobo Giga Vu Pro compete with the Epson P-2000? Read my extensive review to discover the answer.

“I’m a black and white digital photographer, and I love taking photos in the deserts of Southern California, although I also love venturing into the cities as well. I’m currently using a Minolta Dimage C600, but have also used the DImage F300, and a Kodak DC280. I do all of my processing in Photoshop, mostly using the dodge and burn brush, and also some unsharp mask.”

The Vosonic X’S Drive II Plus VP2160 is a portable storage device that is aimed at the digital photographer who wants something that is both easy to use and affordable. The VP2160 is a compact device thanks to its use of an internal 2.5 inch hard drive, but it still offers a generous 2.5 inch monochrome LCD screen that allows you to view the transfer status of your file downloads (there is no actual viewing of the images themselves). 12 different memory card formats are supported by the Vosonic VP2160 via two external memory card slots. As the Vosonic X’S Drive II Plus VP2160 is basically a hard-drive in a stylish metal case, any type of file that you would normally find on a computer can be stored on it. Copying your digital photos from a memory card onto the VP2160 takes just one button press, and copying them from the VP2160 onto your computer is via a speedy USB 2.0 Connection. With a price tag of under £150 for both the 20Gb and 40Gb versions, should the Vosonic X’S Drive II Plus VP2160 find a home in every photographer’s camera bag? Find out by reading my review.

The Nikon Coolpix 7600 is a stylishly designed 7 megapixel compact digital camera that was first announced at the PMA show back in February 2005. The Nikon Coolpix 7600 has a 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-114mm on a 35mm camera, a 1.8 inch LCD screen and 16 different scene modes to help you take better pictures.
