Adobe has announced that Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone, an application that was initially available to US and Canadian residents only, is now available worldwide in all countries with iPhone App Stores. Photoshop.com Mobile provides consumers a convenient way to edit photos, apply effects and share images instantly with friends - all with the flick of a finger. In addition, the application gives users access to their entire online collection of photos from Photoshop.com and allows them to share them directly within the application. iFotoGuide has released the first iPhone app & digital guide to on-location nature photography. “iFotoGuide: Arches” is the first in a series of digital guides for the iPhone providing nature photographers with a comprehensive resource for planning every aspect of a photography trip. It goes beyond the ordinary photo guidebook by providing three innovative ways for iPhone users to find a dynamic location for photography. An interactive park map allows users to zoom, pan and select photography locations by name. Amazon has reduced the price of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 from nearly $300 to less than $170. The offer is valid on U.S. orders only, as the retailer explicitly states that this “item can be shipped only within the U.S.”. There is no information provided as to how long the deal will last.

Nikon have released a new version, 2.7.0, of Camera Control Pro. This software allows photographers to control a camera remotely from a computer using either a wired or a wireless connection. Changes in this version include added support for the new Nikon D3s DSLR, Mac OS X version 10.5.8 and 10.6.1 as well as 32- and 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. Note however that in a 64-bit environment the software operates as a 32-bit application.

Nikon has released version 2.2.3 of its Capture NX software. The new version adds support for the Nikon D3s DSLR and fixes a few bugs related to GPS data, flash exposure compensation data and unexpected software terminations. Additionally, the Macintosh version fixes an issue with the verification of most image profiles in the Profile First Aid panel of Mac OS X’s Color Sync Utility.

Apple has just updated its photo management software, iPhoto. Version 8.1.1 addresses issues affecting face recognition performance and accuracy. It also fixes minor bugs in the areas of book ordering and iPod touch support. Important: If you imported photos of people while using iPhoto 8.1, there’s an extra step you should take after installing the 8.1.1 update. Select all those photos, Control-click to open the contextual menu, and then choose Detect Missing Faces. This will re-detect the faces in those photos and correct any face recognition issues introduced in iPhoto 8.1. You should not quit iPhoto during the Detect Missing Faces process.

Adobe Photoshop.com Mobile for Android, released on 6 November 2009, is now available globally in all countries with Android Market. Based on customer feedback, this release also includes improvements to the user experience around launching and exiting the application. The Android application equips consumers with quick and easy image-editing tools, colour adjustments and instant photo-sharing capabilities. After making edits on their Android device, users can upload photos from their phone to their Photoshop.com account to view and retrieve their images at a later time from any Internet-connected computer.

Opera Software’s Photo Sharing application turns a folder on your computer into a into a fully functional photo gallery that can be directly accessed by your friends and family, in any Web browser. The Photo Sharing application in Opera Unite is available as part of the free Opera Web browser. Pentax has announced a Windows-only update to the PENTAX Digital Camera Utility 4 program. Version 4.11 adds support for the Pentax K-x digital SLR camera, corrects a few bugs, adds [Cross Processing], [Picture: Blue Sky] and [Picture: Sunset] to the Image data display, adds lens data for the smc Pentax DA L55-300mmF4-5.8 ED telezoom, and improves overall stability. Adobe has posted documentation for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Beta. Help topics include a What’s New section, importing photos into a catalogue, exporting using Publish Services, creating a copyright watermark, simulating film grain, updating the process version, applying a post-crop vignette, exporting a video slide show and Custom print packages. To access the documentation, choose Help > Lightroom Help (F1) in Lightroom 3 Beta or go to Using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Beta. Adobe warns that “just like the software, this documentation is prerelease”.

Akvis Software has released version 10 of AKVIS Sketch for Windows and Macintosh. The software converts photos to colour and black-and-white pencil drawings and watercolor paintings. Version 10.0 has a new tool – Stroke Direction, which makes the effect of a hand-drawn sketch yet more realistic thanks to the ultimate control over the hatch direction. New presets have been added, the Preview Window improved and other features made available. The program is now compatible with Windows 7 and Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). Adobe has announced the availability of new Release Candidates (RCs) of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), DNG Converter and Lightroom. Release Candidates are software versions that have been thoroughly tested, but could still benefit from user feedback. Version 2.6 of Lightroom and version 5.6 of ACR / DNG Converter add support for a range of new cameras and digital backs, including the Canon EOS 7D, Canon Powershot G11, Canon Powershot S90, Mamiya DM22 / DM28 / DM33 / DM 56, Nikon D3s, Olympus E-P2, Pentax K-x, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38, Sigma DP1s, Sony Alpha DSLR-A500 / A550 and A850 cameras and the Leaf Aptus II 5, Mamiya M18 / M22 & M31 medium format backs.

VSO Software has released version 3.0.0.140 of VSO Resizer, a program targeted primarily at digital photo frame owners. New features include a smart digital frame transfer assistant, new filters, new algorithms and a new resize method called seam carving. This embedded seam carving technology is a smart “content aware” resizing method to keep the full content of an existing picture without distorting the image. Two Pilots have released a new version of Exif Pilot, a program that allows users to view, edit or even create EXIF data. In the new version of Exif Pilot, the list of supported image formats is significantly expanded. Now the program allows reading and editing the following file formats: JPEG, TIFF, PNG, DNG, NEF, PEF, CRW, and JP2. Read-only support is provided for these formats: PSD, RAF, CR2, MRW, ARW, and many others. The program also allows you to export data to an Excel table for analysis and storage. Batch editing is available with the Pro version. Exif Pilot Lite is free, Exif Pilot is $29.95, while Exif Pilot Pro costs $39.95. All three versions are Windows only.

Apple has released the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update which, in addition to containing general operating system fixes, cures a number of problems experienced by Photoshop users. John Nack reports that “the Photoshop team has been helping Apple test these fixes”, which address software crashes, program errors, and various issues with images failing to open, cursors not displaying correctly etc. Some of the problems resolved in the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update affect multiple versions of Photoshop, while others are specific to CS4.
