“I concentrate on nature because that is my passion, conservation of our wildlife and the rest of the natural world is at a critical point. Most people probably would not realise that in the last 30 years we have lost close to 40% of our butterfly and insect population worldwide, and the same goes for most species on our planet. So my hope through my photography and many more like me, is that we will spark more awareness of this problem to the younger generation.”

Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC LensCameraLabs have just reviewed the new Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC lens.

“In terms of focusing speed, the Nikkor’s premium SWM system was certainly quicker than the Sigma and Tamron, but not by a large degree. Where they really differed though was in focusing noise with both the Sigma and Tamron models being considerably louder than the Nikkor. The Tamron was worst of all in this respect, grinding quite conspicuously during manually focusing. Again if ultimate discretion is your thing, you’ll need to spend more on the Nikkor.”

Pentax Optio W10DigitalCameraInfo have reviewed the Pentax Optio W10, a 6 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD and a waterproof body.

“The Pentax Optio W10 is a waterproof compact camera with a 3x zoom lens, 6-megapixel CCD and a list price of $299.95. Though waterproofing might seem like a gimmick – how many pictures does anyone need of their kids underwater?—Waterproof cameras are, by definition, sealed against dust, dirt, and moisture. The W10 should be a durable camera, ready to be carried in pockets and taken out in the rain. It’s also tough enough for even small children to use on their own.”

“Overall, the Nikon Coolpix S6 delivers good to very good image quality in “sunny outdoors” situations but is a bit challenged in low-light situations. It does have many practical features, such as BSS, D-Lighting (see User’s Experience) and Manual AF areas that help you get the most in those challenging situations.”

Olympus FE-115DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Olympus FE-115 camera, which offers 5 megapixels, 2.8x zoom, 1.5 inch LCD, and costs around £120 in the UK.

“Image quality was quite good considering the FE-115’s low price; you’ll be pleased with the 4x6-inch prints that it will typically be called on to produce. Its 5-megapixel SHQ images are adequately sharp with good color saturation, exposure and white balance. Noise levels were low when ambient lighting permitted the camera to keep a low ISO setting. Noise was quite acceptable when the mode dial was turned to D Image Stabilization, a mode that effectively raises the camera’s ISO setting to 320 so that higher shutter speeds can be used.”

“The V603 also captures nice portrait images, whether shooting indoors or out. Our portrait samples showed sharp facial detail and pleasing skin tones. When using the flash in low lighting, I found it worked well as long as you stay within the flash’s range. Kodak claims it can cover approx. 8.5 feet, and I found it produced good flash exposures from about 5 or 6 feet away using the mid telephoto end of the zoom range. Thanks to the focus-assist lamp, you’ll have no problems focusing in marginal lighting; even complete darkness.”

In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

Samsung GX-1LDIWA member and Norwegian website digit.no have published their review of the Samsung GX-1L DSLR, which offers 6-megapixels, five-point wide-area Auto Focus system, three-mode metering system and 8 scene modes.

“With a name like Samsung, known to the photographic world as a manufacturer of low-end compacts, it can’t be easy to fight against mighty, established names like Canon, Nikon, Pentax og Olympus on the D-SLR arena. Nevertheless, Samsung is one of the fastest growing companies in the industry and I woun’t be surprised if they one day is a leading D-SLR brand. The GX-1L is the first baby from their marriage with Pentax. Basically, the GX-1L is a slightly modified version of the Pentax *ist DL and comes in a kit with two amazing zoom lenses; 18-55 mm and 50-200 mm. Branded Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon, but obviously identical to the Pentax versions, they both deliver outstanding optical performance at very competitive prices. The GX-1L has no major weaknesses, but lacks some of the most refined features found in more advanced D-SLRs. In most respects, the GX-1L matches its main competitors, even outperforms them in terms of a larger and brighter viewfinder, larger and more detailed LCD screen, USB 2.0 High Speed interface, AA battery compatibility, yet light weight and small dimensions. Although lens performance is outstanding, the image processing performance deteriorates the capabilities of the 6.1 MP CCD sensor when images are stored as JPEGs. If you stick to the RAW format, the GX-1L will provide first class images for its class and price range. My summary is that the Samsung GX-1L in kit with the two standard zoom lenses is a price bargain it is unwise to overlook.”
