Kodak Easyshare V603DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the new Kodak Easyshare V603 camera, which offers 6.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD, and available for $299.95.

“The V603 also captures nice portrait images, whether shooting indoors or out. Our portrait samples showed sharp facial detail and pleasing skin tones. When using the flash in low lighting, I found it worked well as long as you stay within the flash’s range. Kodak claims it can cover approx. 8.5 feet, and I found it produced good flash exposures from about 5 or 6 feet away using the mid telephoto end of the zoom range. Thanks to the focus-assist lamp, you’ll have no problems focusing in marginal lighting; even complete darkness.”

Gary's ParriesThis week’s Gary’s Parries topics are:

1. $30 PhotoShop Equivalent
2. Carry That Weight

Introducing this week’s Gary’s Parries column. Everything you always wanted to know about digital cameras, but were afraid to ask. No question too difficult, or too easy. As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, inventor, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected] , and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away. No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email, which may be further edited for grammar, content, or other reasons.

Nikon USA Press Release

Trial Version Offers 30 Days to Test Drive Capture NX - A Powerful and Intuitive New Software That Dramatically Simplifies Photo Editing for JPEG, TIFF and Nikon RAW (NEF) Format Images

MELVILLE, N.Y., July 7 /PRNewswire/—Nikon (http://www.nikondigital.com) today released a trial version of Capture NX(TM)—a new software that is designed specifically for photographers, providing a unique and easy to understand interface with tools that photographers need, but without the level of complexity and clutter of other image editing applications. The software can be used with JPEG and TIFF format images from any source, and its patented new U Point(TM) technology offers photographers a dramatically simplified way to edit their pictures by enabling them to enhance specific areas of a picture selectively, without the use of masks, selections, or layers. Capture NX also works with Nikon’s RAW (NEF) format images, and inherits Nikon’s robust RAW processing capabilities for the highest quality results from NEF files.

Jobo GIGA Vu PRO evolutionJOBO AG Press Release

Gummersbach, Germany (July 7, 2006) –  JOBO AG announces today that the JOBO GIGA Vu Pro evolution digital image storage and viewing device has been awarded the prestigious eighth annual American Photo Editor’s Choice 2006 Award in the Storage & Display category. In choosing the JOBO GIGA Vu PRO evolution, the editors of American Photo said, “With a bright, beautiful 3.7-inch screen, this portable multimedia player gives the Epson P-4000 stiff competition. Rubberized and shock-resistant, it offers super fast transfers from CF cards; its DVI output lets you run a digital projector directly from the unit. Our favorite feature, though, is the Evolution’s ability to receive images wirelessly from a Wi-Fi D-SLR.”

Samsung GX-1LDIWA member and Norwegian website digit.no have published their review of the Samsung GX-1L DSLR, which offers 6-megapixels, five-point wide-area Auto Focus system, three-mode metering system and 8 scene modes.

“With a name like Samsung, known to the photographic world as a manufacturer of low-end compacts, it can’t be easy to fight against mighty, established names like Canon, Nikon, Pentax og Olympus on the D-SLR arena. Nevertheless, Samsung is one of the fastest growing companies in the industry and I woun’t be surprised if they one day is a leading D-SLR brand. The GX-1L is the first baby from their marriage with Pentax. Basically, the GX-1L is a slightly modified version of the Pentax *ist DL and comes in a kit with two amazing zoom lenses; 18-55 mm and 50-200 mm. Branded Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon, but obviously identical to the Pentax versions, they both deliver outstanding optical performance at very competitive prices. The GX-1L has no major weaknesses, but lacks some of the most refined features found in more advanced D-SLRs. In most respects, the GX-1L matches its main competitors, even outperforms them in terms of a larger and brighter viewfinder, larger and more detailed LCD screen, USB 2.0 High Speed interface, AA battery compatibility, yet light weight and small dimensions. Although lens performance is outstanding, the image processing performance deteriorates the capabilities of the 6.1 MP CCD sensor when images are stored as JPEGs. If you stick to the RAW format, the GX-1L will provide first class images for its class and price range. My summary is that the Samsung GX-1L in kit with the two standard zoom lenses is a price bargain it is unwise to overlook.”

Canon PowerShot S3 ISImaging Resource have reviewed the Canon PowerShot S3 IS, a 6 megapixel camera with an image stabilized 12x zoom lens, ISO 800 and a 2 inch LCD screen.

“I like having ISO 800 available and appreciate Canon’s decision to let us pick a more aggressive Auto ISO (Auto High) for the S3 IS than the standard. I shot the mandolin strings that appear in the gallery at ISO 800 and the noise, although evident when examined closely, didn’t bother me enough to tap into one or another noise reduction filter. In short, I really appreciated the versatility that the PowerShot S3 IS’s increased sensitivity and optical stabilization provided.”

Pentax *ist DL2TrustedReviews have cast their critical eye over the 6 megapixel Pentax *ist DL2 digital SLR camera.

“With such a small camera there is of course the danger that handling could be compromised, but fortunately this is not the case. The DL2 only has a bare minimum of external controls and they are well spaced out so they’re not crowded. The handgrip is small compared to other DSLRs, but is comfortable to hold even for my very large hands. The sculpted shape is a definite improvement over the rather cramped grip of the *ist D, and a large thumb grip at the back makes for a very secure hold.”

Kodak Easyshare P712CNET have the first online review of the 7 megapixel, 12x zoom Kodak Easyshare P712 digital camera.

“According to Kodak, its 7.1-megapixel EasyShare P712 was designed for “second- and third-time digital camera buyers.” Appropriately, the camera includes a higher level of control than many of Kodak’s cameras, such as manual white balance, full manual exposure, and a trio of custom picture modes. It also sports a hotshoe, which can be outfitted with an accessory flash and can record images as raw, TIFF, or JPEG files. Anyone stepping up from a simple point-and-shoot camera will likely be impressed with the level of control offered, as well as the 12X optical, 36mm-to-432mm, f/2.8-to-f/3.7 zoom lens, but a slightly sluggish start-up time and noisy images at higher ISOs will irk more advanced shooters.”
