ePhotoZine have just reviewed Capture One Pro raw editor from Phase One.
“Capture One excels at reproducing fine detail, the crop taken from the singer’s hair shows more clearly defined detail than with Rawshooter Essentials, but is matched by Adobe Camera Raw. Regular patterns are also clearly rendered, the crop taken from the singer’s scarf is ever so slightly smoother than both the other processing solutions. Noise is also well controlled, giving images a film-like appearance, unlike the harsh regular pattern produced by Rawshooter Essentials.”

CNET have taken a look at the new 6 megapixel Sony DSC W30 which offers a 3x optical zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD screen.
“Sony’s pocket-size shooter, the Cyber Shot DSC-W30, provides impressive photos and fast, easy operation in a simple package. Digital neophytes may question its modest allotment of seven scene modes, but the available exposure modes do a good job of handling most situations. In fact, snapshooters will likely be pleased with the results they get from this camera. However, a limited 3X zoom lens and a paucity of manual controls limit the DSC-W30’s enthusiast appeal to those looking for a small second camera. “

CNET have reviewed the new Canon PowerShot A530, which offers 5 megapixels, ISO 800, 2.5 inch LCD and a 4x optical zoom lens.
“Speed is really the A530’s weakness. After a start-up time of 2.1 seconds—pretty typical for cameras in this class—and a brisk 0.5-second shutter lag in good light, the lag increases to a full second with the lights turned low. The A530 requires a painful 2.8 seconds between nonflash shots and a full 6 seconds between shots with flash. Even its continuous shooting proved surprisingly slow, averaging about 1.8fps compared to the A540’s 2.3fps.”

CNET have reviewed the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 which combines a 12x optical zoom lens with MEGA O.I.S. in a compact body.
“Compared to digital SLRs and some other megazoom cameras, the small, lightweight 6-megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7 feels almost like a toy. Only after acknowledging its powerful 12X (36mm-to-432mm, 35mm-equivalent) optically stabilized lens, manual controls, extended selection of scene modes, and VGA movie capture do you realize that this camera’s capabilities far outstrip its size and weight.”

Ilford Press Release
The words written by Owen Meredith 140-years ago: ‘Genius does what it must, and Talent does what it can’ seem to encapsulate the life and work of the passionate, some say obsessed, photographer and print maker Bob Carlos Clarke who sadly died on 25 March this year. The dark genius of Bob Carlos Clarke never left his work, whether it was photographing fetish-themed beautiful women in latex and rubber, advertising work for the likes of Levi, Smirnoff, Volkswagen and, paradoxically, Alliance & Leicester Building Society, or candid night-time shots of the nation’s youth at play. Carlos Clarke’s evocative use of black-and-white photographic artistry naturally brought him into contact with ILFORD whose film and paper he used for much of his work from the late 1980s. He undertook touring lectures for ILFORD and played to sell-out audiences wherever he went.

iPhoto 6 Manual and Complete Digital Photography Course—Two Books in One O’Reilly Releases “iPhoto 6: The Missing Manual”
Sebastopol, CA—“Don’t let the rumors fool you. iPhoto may be simple, but it isn’t simplistic,” say David Pogue and Derrick Story. “It offers a wide range of tools, shortcuts, and database-like features; a complete arsenal of photo-presentation features; and sophisticated multimedia and Internet hooks. Unfortunately, many of the best techniques aren’t covered in the only ‘manual’ you get with iPhoto—its slow, sparse electronic help screens.” That’s where their new “iPhoto 6: The Missing Manual” (Pogue and Story, O’Reilly, US $29.99) comes in: it’s the iPhoto book that should have been in the box and a complete course in digital photography. Dramatically faster than previous versions, iPhoto 6 can handle 250,000 photos and boasts dozens of new features for storing, searching, editing, publishing, and sharing digital pictures. In full color, this authoritative, witty guide delivers the technical expertise to take advantage of each and every iPhoto detail, as well as the artistic know-how to shoot consistently great photos—including professional tips for composition, lighting, and manual exposure.

BuddyBackup is free software, which allows computer users to backup data to friends’, family or colleagues’ computers securely across the internet. BuddyBackup allows computer users to backup files, photos, music or virtually any computer data to be securely and remotely backed up with no charge at all. As with normal paid services, BuddyBackup can keep multiple copies of important data securely and remotely on any Windows XP based machine. Data is encrypted and compressed before being sent over the internet and can only be viewed by the user whose data it is. Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) April 7, 2006—At the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International Conference (WPPI), Seefile Software is announcing their latest innovation- an eCommerce module for Seefile 2.0, their award winning Webserver software for photographers. Seefile has been praised by Shutterbug, Seybold and Studio Photography and Design and was rated best of Show at PMA 2005. SeeFile is exhibiting at WPPI booth 1208. DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S6, a 6 megapixel, 3x optical zoom len, 3 inch LCD digital camera.
“I was pleased with the overall image quality when using 6-Megapixel Fine mode. Outdoor images showed good overall exposure, with colors being nicely saturated. Noise levels were very low at sensitivity settings of ISO 50 and 100. Shadow noise is present at ISO 200, and noise is noticeable throughout the image at ISO 400, although those images are quite usable.”

DIWA member and Steves Digicams have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Nikon Coolpix S5 digital camera.
“I was disappointed with one aspect of the lens, however; it has a fixed aperture. The lens does include an electronically-controlled neutral-density filter that reduces the available light to an effective f/8 from f/3 at wide angle, but that step is sometimes too great, causing the exposure system to select it in combination with a slow shutter speed, sometimes resulting in images blurred by camera shake even in bright sunlight. The lens also exhibits a bit of vignetting, or light fall-off at the corners.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“Even though the Canon 30D may not exactly be a revolutionary digital SLR camera, and the expectations were somewhat subdued, it is still a truly fantastic camera. The concept was already solid as could be, but with the introduction of the Canon EOS 30D, Canon have once again clearly asserted and strengthened its roots and their position. There are virtually no points that might cause any form of hindrance for the user, which, in our opinion, is an excellent performance indeed. A superb camera!”

Bob Atkins has just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.
“Since the EOS 20D and EOS 30D share the same sensor and same Digic II digital image processing chip, you’d probably expect that they would both show very similar noise levels - and you’d be right. . Apart from very slight differences in exposure and color balance, the noise levels are virtually identical. The Canon DSLRs are known for their low noise levels along with minimal loss of sharpness due to any noise reduction algorithms. Almost any camera can show low noise with aggressive enough noise reduction, but that leads to a significant sharpness loss.”

DigiCamReview has the first online review of the Olympus mju 720 SW, a 7.1 megapixel, 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, weatherproof digital camera.
“The Olympus Stylus / Mju 720SW has a LOT going for it, and would be especially suited to someone who wants to take their camera with them everywhere they go, especially if they’re prone to dropping things, getting things wet, getting things dusty. The shockproof and dustproof qualities, and the solid build of the digital camera is likely to make the digital camera last much longer than other digital cameras, this makes it excellent value for money compared to less solid digital cameras.”

DCResource have just reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix V10 Zoom, a 5 megapixel camera with 3 inch LCD screen that can also play games!
“Photo quality was a mixed bag: it really depends on the situation. In normal outdoor shooting, the V10 took very nice photos, with accurate color, good exposure, and pleasing sharpness. In lower light levels the camera will want to crank up the ISO, and if it gets above ISO 400 then things start looking more like Monet paintings than photographs. The FinePix V10 doesn’t perform as well as the now legendary F10 in this area, and some other cameras like the Sony DSC-W50 wipe the floor with it. Redeye was also a big problem, and if you shoot under unusual lighting you might want to find a camera with manual white balance instead.”

Imaging Resource have reviewed the new dual lens Kodak V570 camera.
” The Kodak V570 presents an interesting problem for us. It’s a camera with a lot in the plus column and a lot in the minus column; yet it still nets out as a positive experience. We really like the camera for its unique dual lens arrangement that includes a surprisingly useful 23mm wide angle lens, but its image quality really isn’t as good as it could be for a 5 megapixel camera.”

PrinterSpot have just reviewed the Canon MP500 all-in-one printer, which incorporates Canon’s new ChromaLife100 system, 1 picolitre droplets and 96002 x 2400 dpi prinring resolution.
“The Canon Pixma MP500 offers a great value for an inkjet multi-purpose printer in its price range—if you don’t need a fax. For $200, you get a lot of functionality: a photo printer with memory slots and adjustable 2.5” LCD screen, a scanner, and a copier. The user interface on the printer itself is simple and easy to use. Those who want a fax will have to shell out another hundred dollars for the MP830.”
