Nikon Coolpix S6DIWA member Steves Digicams have reviewed the Nikon Coolpix S6, a 6 megapixel, 3x optical zoom len, 3 inch LCD digital camera.

“I was pleased with the overall image quality when using 6-Megapixel Fine mode. Outdoor images showed good overall exposure, with colors being nicely saturated. Noise levels were very low at sensitivity settings of ISO 50 and 100. Shadow noise is present at ISO 200, and noise is noticeable throughout the image at ISO 400, although those images are quite usable.”

Nikon Coolpix S5DIWA member and Steves Digicams have reviewed the new 6 megapixel Nikon Coolpix S5 digital camera.

“I was disappointed with one aspect of the lens, however; it has a fixed aperture. The lens does include an electronically-controlled neutral-density filter that reduces the available light to an effective f/8 from f/3 at wide angle, but that step is sometimes too great, causing the exposure system to select it in combination with a slow shutter speed, sometimes resulting in images blurred by camera shake even in bright sunlight. The lens also exhibits a bit of vignetting, or light fall-off at the corners.”

Canon EOS 30DDIWA member LetsGoDigital have just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.

“Even though the Canon 30D may not exactly be a revolutionary digital SLR camera, and the expectations were somewhat subdued, it is still a truly fantastic camera. The concept was already solid as could be, but with the introduction of the Canon EOS 30D, Canon have once again clearly asserted and strengthened its roots and their position. There are virtually no points that might cause any form of hindrance for the user, which, in our opinion, is an excellent performance indeed. A superb camera!”

Canon EOS 30DBob Atkins has just reviewed the new 8 megapixel Canon EOS 30D DSLR.

“Since the EOS 20D and EOS 30D share the same sensor and same Digic II digital image processing chip, you’d probably expect that they would both show very similar noise levels - and you’d be right. . Apart from very slight differences in exposure and color balance, the noise levels are virtually identical. The Canon DSLRs are known for their low noise levels along with minimal loss of sharpness due to any noise reduction algorithms. Almost any camera can show low noise with aggressive enough noise reduction, but that leads to a significant sharpness loss.”

Olympus mju 720 SWDigiCamReview has the first online review of the Olympus mju 720 SW, a 7.1 megapixel, 3x zoom, 2.5 inch LCD, weatherproof digital camera.

“The Olympus Stylus / Mju 720SW has a LOT going for it, and would be especially suited to someone who wants to take their camera with them everywhere they go, especially if they’re prone to dropping things, getting things wet, getting things dusty. The shockproof and dustproof qualities, and the solid build of the digital camera is likely to make the digital camera last much longer than other digital cameras, this makes it excellent value for money compared to less solid digital cameras.”

Fujifilm FinePix V10 ZoomDCResource have just reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix V10 Zoom, a 5 megapixel camera with 3 inch LCD screen that can also play games!

“Photo quality was a mixed bag: it really depends on the situation. In normal outdoor shooting, the V10 took very nice photos, with accurate color, good exposure, and pleasing sharpness. In lower light levels the camera will want to crank up the ISO, and if it gets above ISO 400 then things start looking more like Monet paintings than photographs. The FinePix V10 doesn’t perform as well as the now legendary F10 in this area, and some other cameras like the Sony DSC-W50 wipe the floor with it. Redeye was also a big problem, and if you shoot under unusual lighting you might want to find a camera with manual white balance instead.”

Kodak V570Imaging Resource have reviewed the new dual lens Kodak V570 camera.

” The Kodak V570 presents an interesting problem for us. It’s a camera with a lot in the plus column and a lot in the minus column; yet it still nets out as a positive experience. We really like the camera for its unique dual lens arrangement that includes a surprisingly useful 23mm wide angle lens, but its image quality really isn’t as good as it could be for a 5 megapixel camera.”

Canon PIXMA MP500PrinterSpot have just reviewed the Canon MP500 all-in-one printer, which incorporates Canon’s new ChromaLife100 system, 1 picolitre droplets and 96002 x 2400 dpi prinring resolution.

“The Canon Pixma MP500 offers a great value for an inkjet multi-purpose printer in its price range—if you don’t need a fax. For $200, you get a lot of functionality: a photo printer with memory slots and adjustable 2.5” LCD screen, a scanner, and a copier. The user interface on the printer itself is simple and easy to use. Those who want a fax will have to shell out another hundred dollars for the MP830.”

As a Senior Principal Software Engineer, and a former Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems, as well as a recording studio owner/operator, and now, a digital camera enthusiast, GARY has more digital camera knowledge in his entire brain than most people have in their little finger. In the unlikely event that GARY would not know the answer to your question, he will answer it anyway, true to the spirit of the word “Parries”, a fencing term which, in this context, implies “cleverly evasive answers”. So let your imagination run wild. Email all your nagging digital camera questions to: [email protected], and then, En Garde!

You may also attach to your email an ORIGINAL PHOTO of your choosing. A preview of the photo will be displayed with your question, and a full-sized version will be just a click away, for viewing and downloading (unless you request otherwise). No personal information will be published with your question unless you specifically include it in the text or attached photo of your email. New Web-based Photo Editor Raises Usability Standards for Internet Applications - Phixr.com, a new Web-based photo editor, sets new standards in usability and handling of online applications. It offers users access to a “look & feel” program previously only found in desktop applications and a full palette of tools to edit digital photos.

Vienna, Austria (PRWEB) April 6, 2006—A small Austrian company today launched www.phixr.com, a free Web-based photo editor with a user interface similar to many desktop applications. “The site’s user interface is on the forefront of Web application development,” said Thomas Winischhofer, the founder of Phixr.com. “Its interactivity with the user sets new standards, especially by using interface elements, which were so far only common to ordinary desktop applications.” Winischhofer created Phixr.com to accommodate digital photographers when they don’t have access to their picture editing software. Phixr.com offers users a full palette of interactive tools to easily manipulate photo files without having to download software. In addition to its many operations for resizing, rotating and flipping pictures, it features tools to eliminate the infamous “red-eye” effect and to create personal greeting cards. New interface technologies make it possible to present the user with a preview for every operation.

Canon PowerShot A540DCResource have reviewed the new Canon PowerShot A540, which offers 6 megapixels, ISO 800, 2.5 inch LCD and a 4x optical zoom lens.

“Camera performance was very good. The A540 starts up in just 1.3 seconds, it focuses fairly quickly, and shutter lag was not a problem. Low light focusing was very good, thanks to the A540’s AF-assist lamp. One of the benefits of the camera’s DIGIC II processor is a great continuous shooting mode: the camera can keep firing away at 2.3 frames/second until the memory card is full (as long as you’re using a high speed card). Battery life is excellent on the PowerShot A540.”
