Sony Cyber-shot N1HP Press Release

LONDON, December 15th, 2005 – THE QUEEN has today received the largest Christmas card ever to be sent to the Royal family.

The huge 9ft x 5ft card was hand-delivered to Buckingham Palace by a group of young children from NCH, the children’s charity. The card was received by Palace footmen on behalf of the Royal family.

The giant Christmas card contains festive digital photos from thousands of British people across the country, and also features goodwill messages from Britons to the Royal family.

Photo expert HP spent the last two months collecting the photos and messages as part of their “Colourful Christmas” charity fundraising effort for NCH, the Children’s Charity. For each picture and message donated for the card, HP donated £1 to the NCH. This money will help disadvantaged children around the country.

Epson Stylus Photo RX520Trusted Reviews have the first online review of the Epson Stylus Photo RX520 all-in-one printer, which includes a transparency unit for film scanning and allows direct photo printing from memory cards.

“When it comes to printing 15 x 10cm photos, though, things are very different. A print from a PC still takes an uncomfortably long 2:24, but prints from memory cards or a PictBridge camera come in at only just over a minute. This is a very competitive time, when compared with Canon or HP devices in the same price bracket. Print quality for photos, as we’ve come to expect from Epson printers, is very good. Our test images were clear and precise with little noticeable colour cast. There was good definition in darker, shadowed areas and gradated areas of colour, such as skies, were smooth. Colours printed from cards and cameras were also natural and images sharp.”

Olympus SP-350DCResource have reviewed the new Olympus SP-350, an 8 megapixel camera that offers a 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-114mm and a 2.5 inch LCD monitor.

“Camera performance is, without a doubt, the SP-350’s biggest weak point. While the camera starts up quickly, it’s all downhill from there. Focus times are just fair, shutter lag was noticeable (which was very surprising), and shot-to-shot times can be lengthy, especially if you’re using RAW mode. The continuous shooting modes were nothing to write home about, either. Playback speeds were slow as well, especially when RAW images are displayed. Low light focusing performance was a little disappointing for a camera with an AF-assist lamp.”

Nikon Coolpix P1DigitalCameraReview have published a review of the Nikon Coolpix P2 Wi-Fi digital camera.

“While no means a killer to the overall camera’s value, some of Nikon’s user interface and human design factor choices baffle me. For example, the knob on the top of the camera that changes modes on just about every other camera on the planet does more than just change modes. There is a setting for ‘Setup’, changing resolution, ISO, and white balance settings. There is also a setting to enter wireless mode to begin photo transfer. An inexperienced user could become very confused if the camera slips into ISO mode, the camera stops taking pictures, and the user is asked what ISO they want to shoot. Strange.”

Sigma 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG MACRO LensSigma Press Release

28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG MACRO for Pentax mount is available

This digitally optimized lens covers all the focal lengths from 28mm wide angle to 300mm telephoto with 10.7:1 high zoom ratio as well as macro capability.

The new multi layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range. This lens features two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements and four aspherical lenses for excellent correction of all types of aberration and displays a high level of optical ability. The use of aspherical lenses in the construction of this lens not only corrects aberrations but also produces a very compact and lightweight lens design. The 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG MACRO lens has a minimum focusing distance of 50cm at all focal lengths and is equipped with a macro mechanism for close-up photography at 300mm telephoto, allowing a reproduction ratio of 1:3. This design allows for stability and compactness in design as changes in focus are made in an internal lens grouping. This also gives the advantage of a non-rotating front lens assembly, which is of great benefit when using polarizing filter and Petal-type hood. Petal-type hood (LH680-01) is included as a standard accessory.

Fujifilm FinePix S9500 ZoomImaging Resource have published their review of the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 Zoom, a new 9 megapixel digital camera with a 28-300mm lens with twist-barrel zoom control (also known as the S9000).

“Fujifilm, one of the major players in the digital camera field, has introduced the FinePix S9000. Replacing the FinePix S7000 at the company’s high end, the Fuji S9000’s resolution has been upped to a class-leading nine megapixels, and an extremely powerful 10.7x optical zoom lens combines to offer what Fujifilm obviously feels can compete head-on with competitors’ digital SLR offerings. ISO sensitivity has been improved to allow ISO 1600 at full resolution, and an articulated LCD display caches in on the main advantage of non-SLR cameras - a live preview image that lets you see what you’ll get before you press the shutter button. With a refined user interface and the same great exposure features, autofocus options, and performance as the S7000, the Fuji S9000 could be a hit for the company - but how will it stack up against the increasingly competitive DSLR segment?”

JOBO GIGA ONEePhotoZine have just reviewed the JOBO GIGA ONE, a 20Gb portable storage device that is designed to be easy to use. The JOBO GIGA ONE has a fast USB 2 connection, stores all common file formats and supports all common flash formats.

“The Jobo Giga One is a good buy as it holds such a large amount of data. It’s ideal for digital photographers who shoot large number of images, especially if Raw is the chosen format. It’s far cheaper than the equivalent number of solid-state memory cards. The downside with this unit, and many of the lower priced back up devices, is the lack of confidence that your images are safe because you cannot look at them on the unit’s screen in the way you can on more expensive devices. That aside, it is a good solution.”

Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM LensePhotoZine have reviewed the new Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens, which is equivalent in focal length to the popular EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM when used on the EOS 20D, EOS 300D and the new EOS 350D digtal SLR cameras.

“One of the problems emerging with Canon’s EF-S series of lenses is that you don’t really know what you are getting in performance terms apart from going by the price differences. They all have the same nomenclature so the EF-S 18-55mm ‘kit’ lens is grouped with the excellent EF-S 10-22mm and no one will argue that that they are not worlds apart. This offering of the EF-S 60mm Macro, like it’s price, falls somewhere in between the two. Distortion has been well handled with a figure of –0.237% indicating a very slight pincushion that is almost undetectable with the Mk 1 eyeball.”

Nikon Coolpix 4600CNET have published their review of the 4 megapixel Nikon Coolpix 4600.

“The Coolpix 4600’s photos were similar to the Coolpix 5600’s, except for the lower resolution. Overall, the image quality was quite good. The colors in our exterior shots looked a bit oversaturated, even for a point-and-shoot camera. This was especially evident with the brighter hues, though less obvious with more subdued colors, such as skin tones, that need to be more realistic. Image noise, sharpness, and exposure accuracy were better than average in our well-lit exterior shots.”

Kodak EasyShare Z700CNET have published their review of the Kodak EasyShare Z700, a 4 megapixel digital camera with 5x optical zoom lens.

“What makes the Kodak EasyShare Z700 a viable offering in the universe of low-cost, noncompact, non-EVF 4-megapixel cameras is what you get for the price. The surprising amount of manual control with programmed, aperture-priority, and shutter-priority modes, the 5X zoom lens with unexpected telephoto reach, and the Z700’s decent image quality all exceed what you might expect from a camera in this class. And for just a little more than the camera-only price, you can buy it packaged with a handy Kodak Printer Dock 3.”
