PCMagazine have reviewed the new Epson 3590 Photo flatbed scanner.
“The Epson Perfection 3590 Photo ($149.99 direct) is aimed primarily at people who want to scan photos, but it isn’t limited to scanning prints. The claimed 3,200-pixel-per-inch (ppi) optical resolution is more than enough to scan 35-mm slides and negatives for printing at 8-by-10 or larger, and the built-in automatic film feeder makes scanning 35-mm negatives easy. Most important, scan quality for film is good enough to be useful, and scan quality for prints is very good.”

BIOS have reviewed the new Wacom Graphire Bluetooth, a 6” x 8” wireless pen tablet that can be used up to 30 feet away from your computer.
“Ideal for digital photographers, graphic design professionals and artists, Wacom’s Graphire Bluetooth Wireless Pen Tablet offers a much more precise and natural way to draw freehand compared to a mouse. The tablet doesn’t provide a 1:1 mapping ratio for most monitors, offers just 512 sensitivity levels, and may not be ideal for artistic styles that need full arm motion, but the ability to use the tablet wirelessly and without a power outlet is a real boon. In addition, the excellent bundled software make it worth its high cost for serious artists and designers.”

The new 10 megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 has a 24-120mm lens, which will be wide enough for most people but a bit lacking at the telephoto end. I took a few photos of the wide-angle and telephoto conversion lenses at a recent Sony press conference. As you will see, both the wide angle and tele convertors are best described as “massive”! Personally I can’t see too many people buying them - after all, one of the advantages of the DSC-R1 is that it is smaller and more portable than a digital SLR. That definitely wouldn’t be the case if you had to carry the wide-angle and telephoto conversion lenses as well! Note that these are the production models that you will be able to buy in the shops - they won’t be getting any smaller…

The JVC Everio GZ-MG70 is introduced. The JVC Everio GZ-MG70 is a 2 megapixel camcorder with a 30Gb internal hard-drive for storage. The JVC Everio GZ-MG70 will be available next month and will sell for about $1,100.

New GZ-MG70 features internal 30GB hard drive – records seven hours of DVD movie-quality video
WAYNE, NJ, September 29, 2005 – JVC today announced the addition of a two-megapixel model to its Everio G series line of hard disk camcorders. The new GZ-MG70 features a built-in 30 gigabyte (GB) hard disk drive and a sensor that uses 1.2 megapixels to capture full 16:9 or 4:3 video with digital stabilization, as well as two megapixels for up to 1600 x 1200 pixel digital stills.
JVC’s Everio G Series camcorders eliminate the need to carry tapes, discs or any media at all, yet can record up to seven hours of DVD movie-quality video or more than 10 hours at DVD camcorder-quality. To put this storage capacity in context, it would take 22 single sided DVD camcorder discs (8 cm/20-minute discs) to hold just seven hours of video at camcorder quality.
In addition to native 16:9 and 4:3 DVD movie quality video, the new camcorder’s 2.12 megapixel CCD enables shooting of detailed JPEG photos of up to 1600 x 1200 pixels. The hard disk’s high capacity means that nearly 10,000 photos can be shot and still have room for hours of video, even at the highest quality settings.

Mexican photographer Claudia Guadarrama has become the fifth woman to win the Canon Female Photojournalist Award, for her project on illegal migrants at the South Mexican border. The award, which includes a Canon grant of €8000, was given by the French Association of Women Journalists (AFJ) at the 17th International Festival of Photojournalism Visa pour l’Image in Perpignan, France, in September 2005.
The Canon Female Photojournalist Award was initiated in 2001 by the AFJ and Guy Bourreau, Marketing Director of Canon Communication & Image in France. It aims to support and highlight the work of female photographers around the world. “With women making up only 11% of the world’s photojournalists, the original objective of the award was to address the under-representation of women in this field,” explained Bourreau. “Now in its fifth year, the award has also proven to be a valuable way to discover new talent.” In winning the award, Claudia Guadarrama’s work has been presented publicly for the first time.

DesignTechnica have taken a look at the new Creative Zen Vision, an MP3 player with a 3.7-inch SharpPix™ high-resolution 640x480 262,144-color screen for photo viewing and digital video playback.
“The bottom line is that the Zen Vision is undoubtedly, a very cool product. It’s small and supports the video formats that count, including DivX and Xvid. Audio quality is definitely not as good as you would expect from Creative Labs. However, right now there is little that can compete with the Zen Vision in this price range. If you must have a product like this, you should be fairly happy with the Zen Vision in its current state. Otherwise, wait until some software updates and fixes have been released before buying. Creative has a long history of releasing products with problems, and our advice is to wait until everything has been ironed out.”

DIWA member LetsGoDigital have published their review of the Konica Minolta Z6, which updates the popular Z5 and features a 6 megapixel sensor, 12x zoom lens and 2 inch LCD screen.
“The DiMAGE Z6 digital camera is the result of the experiences Konica Minolta has obtained from previous generations of Megazoom digital cameras. It remains an outstanding achievement, packing a 12x optical zoom in a light weighted and compact housing. If we compare the range with the ‘old-fashioned’ 35mm camera, a range of 35 - 420mm is available! A pity Konica Minolta didn’t succeed in getting the DiMAGE Z6 started with a wide angle of 28mm.”

CNET have published their review of the Canon IXUS 750 digital camera (also known as the Canon PowerShot SD550), which has 7.1 megapixels, 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.
” A slightly more expensive version of the PowerShot SD500, which remains in Canon’s product lineup, the Canon PowerShot SD550 comes with a larger 2.5-inch LCD and a new finish. Like its sibling, it has an exterior design that combines form and function more elegantly than any point-and-shoot we’ve ever tested. A Digic II-powered image-processing system enables the PowerShot SD550 to snap a limitless stream of 7-megapixel photos at a respectable clip, its start-up time is tops in its class, and it delivers decent photos when compared to its competition.”

DigitalCameraInfo have published their review of the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 Zoom, a new 9 megapixel digital camera with a 28-300mm lens with twist-barrel zoom control (also known as the S9000).
“The Fujifilm FinePix has rich colors and does well in low light, so it certainly produces nice looking photographs. Getting those gorgeous photos could be an issue though, as this camera is anything but easy to use. A few read-throughs of the user manual and several shooting sessions are required to learn the non-intuitive nuances of the S9000. Another major obstacle for this model is its dependence on four AA batteries to power it. Users could go through forty bucks of batteries just trying to learn how to change the aperture. For a retail price of $699, there are certainly easier models to use that take great pictures. And there is always the option to upgrade. Consumers can now purchase DSLRs online for around $700.”
