Ricoh GR DigitalSpanish website Quesabesde have previewed (in English) the Ricoh GR Digital, an 8 megapixel compact digicam based on the GR Series of 35mm compact film cameras.

“Apart from the image quality that it will offer (we will have to wait a little to be able to try out a final production model) and the success it may achieve in the shop fronts, the new GR Digital will definitely create interest for Ricoh. One of those rare novelties which, because of its peculiar characteristics represents a small parenthesis in the strident rhythm of new arrivals to the digital market.”

Konica Minolta DiMAGE X60Imaging Resource have reviewed the new Konica Minolta DiMAGE X60, which has a large 2.5inch LCD screen (but no optical viewfinder), 5 megapixels and a sliding lens cover.

“This year, the latest model continuing the heritage of the “X” line is the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X60. While still closely related to its predecessor the DiMAGE X50, the X60 does away with the optical viewfinder, reducing the camera’s size and weight, at the expense of a little versatility. It also replaces the X50’s essentially useless bundled SD card with 15MB of built-in memory - much more useful since it is always in the camera in addition to your own flash card. Although there have been a lot of hardware changes made, the Konica Minolta X60 will feel very familiar to owners of earlier X-series models. With each generation, Konica Minolta’s “X” series has continued to improve, and the images from the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X60 offer high resolution, and good color as well. Read on for all the details, but if you’re looking for a super-portable, easy to use, and stylish camera, the DiMAGE X60 deserves a close look.”

Samsung Digimax i5CNET have just reviewed the new Samsung Digimax i5, a slim 5 megapixel digital camera with 3x optical internal zoom lens equivalent to 39-117mm and a 2.5” 230K-pixel high resolution LCD.

“There’s no doubt that 5-megapixel resolution currently defines the sweet spot of point-and-shoot digital cameras. Samsung’s 5-megapixel ultracompact entry, the Digimax i5, offers a competitive snapshot feature set housed in a nondescript but slender metal body. Interesting features, a bright 2.5-inch LCD, and a VGA movie mode, however, don’t compensate for listless performance and just so-so image quality.”

Canon EOS 5DDigital Outback Photo have started an Experience Report on the 12.8 megapixel Canon EOS 5D digital SLR.

“The 1Ds Mk II has 16.7MP and the 5D 12.8MP. This means that the 1Ds Mk. II has 30% more pixels or 14% more in each dimension. We leave the detail analysis to other people but think that in reality these 2 cameras are pretty close in terms of absolute resolution. Add the noise performance of the 5D (see below) and you have a $3300 camera challenging a camera that costs more than $7000.”

Canon IXUS i ZoomDCResource have the first review of the new Canon IXUS i Zoom digital camera (also known as the SD30). The Canon IXUS i Zoom is a 5 megapixel model with a 2.4x optical zoom lens and 1.8 inch LCD screen.

“If I’m not mistaken the SD30 is the first Canon digital camera to use a camera dock. The dock is what you’ll use to charge the battery, transfer photos to your Mac or PC, and display photos on a television. The camera itself has no I/O ports so this is the only way to do all of those things. Speaking of I/O ports, the ones on the dock include USB, A/V out, and DC-in (for the included AC adapter). The dock supports the USB 2.0 High Speed protocol. When the camera is in the dock it takes about 90 minutes to fully charge the NB-4L battery. An external charger is available if you’d prefer to leave the dock at home.”

Kodak EASYSHARE Picture ViewerDPNow have just reviewed the Kodak EASYSHARE Picture Viewer.

“When you see a Kodak EasyShare Picture Viewer for the first time, you can’t help but instantly marvels at its size. Covering the area of a credit card and just over a centimetre thick, it houses a 2.5 inch colour LCD screen. To put some scale to it, it’s thinner and shorter than most small mobile phones, if a little wider. You simply insert your SD or MMC card into a slot at the top of the unit, press the power button next to it and within seconds any photos stored on the card can be viewed, as if you were looking at the screen on the back of your camera.”

Pentax Optio S55TrustedReviews have reviewed the Pentax OptioS55, a 5 megapixel camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen and 3x optical zoom lens.

“The control layout is simple enough, but this is not a simple camera, and I would certainly not recommend it for a first time user. My parents, both in their 70s, took the S55 on holiday to Italy to get me some good test shots. My father is a keen amateur photographer and owns a couple of nice film SLRs, but he had never used a digital camera before. I attempted to explain the S55’s multiple modes and options to him, but after going over it twice I still don’t think he’d really grasped it. I can’t say I blame him though because to be honest even I found it confusing and difficult to understand.”

The new website I Like Cameras has an in-depth look at tripods, perhaps not the most exciting of subjects, although the author of the article obviously disagrees:

“Let me start this with a seemingly odd statement; tripods are exciting. Tripods will satisfy the deepest gear addiction streak you can muster. They hands down beat megapixels, telephoto lenses and camera bodies for depth and entertainment value. Tripods come closer to religion amongst professional photographers than Canon vs. Nikon. Forget getting a black bodied camera, get a good tripod and your pro-quotient will triple.”

Foto Imagen Digital have a great interview with Toshiyuki Terada, Olympus Product Manager, about the new Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera.

“In our tests we have found that the focus accuracy and reliability in Olympus reflex is very good, better than some of the competition, but the Olympus auto focus are still slow…

This is true. Olympus has not a long run in auto focus making, as other brands have. We know that we must work fast and hard in this respect. We are proud of our auto focus accuracy, and probably it is better than other brands ones, because accuracy mainly remains in the work and integration of the system: lens, mount, sensors… And we have created an all-new integrated system. Other brands don’t. But focus speed remains mainly in the firmware, in the algorithms, and we are improving this. I ask my designers for more speed too! But, always keeping accuracy. We try to improve the speed while keeping the accuracy.”
