Olympus is the latest digital camera manufacturer to report disappointing financial performance in the last quarter, as its net profits tumble by 62%.

“Olympus has blamed its woes in the digital camera market on its failure to launch popular cameras in a timely fashion. As a result, it has been unable to distinguish its products, making them susceptible to discounting. Another problem is its relatively small presence in fast-growing digital single lens reflex (SLR) models, high-end cameras that yield fatter margins and are less vulnerable to price falls than simple point-and-shoot compact cameras.”

Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM LensePhotoZine have the first online review of the new Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM lens wide-angle zoom lens for digital SLRs.

” This lens is sharp! At 20mm, resolution tests showed it matched, and at one point even slightly out performed the venerable Canon 17-40mm L. At 15mm it’s a little soft at the edges, although still nice in the centre, but by the time it gets down to the 10mm mark the edges have improved again. In fact, at the wide end, the overall performance was the best in the range. The lens has obviously been optimised for the shorter focal length as there was no distortion there, whereas the 20mm end did have a little pin-cushioning. “

Pentax Optio S45TrustedReviews have published their review of the 5 megapixel Pentax Optio S45 compact digicam.

“There’s no doubt the S45 is an attractive camera, and thanks to the sandblasted matt metal finish it will stay looking good for a long time. Pentax build quality has always been good and the S45 is certainly no exception. The pressed aluminium body feels very strong, with no creaks or flexing when squeezed. Design and handling are superb, with a comfortable handgrip on the front, easy-to-use controls on the back and that huge LCD monitor. The card slot hatch is separate from the battery hatch and is latched and spring-loaded. The battery hatch is on the base of the camera, but since the tripod bush is right over on the left edge it might be possible to change batteries while the camera is fixed on a tripod.”

Nikon Coolpix 7900ByteSector have reviewed the new Nikon Coolpix 7900, a 7 megapixel digital camera featuring a 2.0-inch LCD screen, new graphical user interface and a 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens equivalent to 38-114mm lens in 35mm format.

“In standard shooting mode, the camera provides enough manual control to please most advanced users, but not so much that it’ll overwhelm a beginner. You get adequate control over the shutter by being able to adjust it +/- 2.0 EV (exposure units) in increments of 1/3 EV. While this isn’t quite the same shutter speed control that many other cameras provide, this feature is good enough in that the camera’s AI typically sets the right exposure automatically. This is more useful if you need to purposely over or underexpose a shot slightly.”

Fujifilm FinePix Z1 ZoomPocket-Lint.co.uk have published their review of the Fujifilm FinePix Z1 Zoom, a 5 megapixel compact digital camera with a large 2.5inch LCD screen and 3 optical zoom.

“Image quality is excellent, with exposures generally very good, focusing working well (even in low light and despite the camera lacking an AF assist lamp) although some shots had a very slight fuzziness when the camera was working hard in lower lighting conditions and at higher ISOs. However, the SuperCCD HR works well at those higher ISOs (up to ISO 800) and noise is well controlled indeed, less noise is good and sharpness can be tweaked on a PC later if needed.”

This weeks “Sunday Morning Photographer” column from Mike Johnston urges you to feel the noise (I know, bad Slade reference).

“It’s that everybody always seems to be talking about noise. Every time I log on to a forum somewhere, people are deeply concerned about it. Such-and-such a camera has noise. Noise at ISO 3200. Noisy sensor. Too much noise. I hear more noise about noise than I do about the national debt. What in the world…? Noise has got to be the biggest non-problem in all of digital photography. First of all, complaining about noise in pictures is like complaining that you can see brushstrokes in paintings at the museum. It’s just a hallmark of the technique; it’s not something to decry, it’s something to enjoy.”

Fujifilm FinePix F10 ZoomPhotoxels have reviewed the new Fujifilm FinePix F10 Zoom, which has an ISO range of 80 to 1600, Super CCD sensor with 6.1 megapixels and a 2.5 inch LCD screen.

“Being able to take pictures at ISO 400 in a P&S consumer digital camera without noise being much of a problem is unheard of—until now. The Fujifilm F10 goes one step further to provide a high ISO 1600—available mostly in high-end dSLR cameras—with acceptable noise in 4x6 in. prints and 800x600 pixels screen display. For many amateur photographers, the possibility to at last use a digital camera in sunny and low-light conditions alike makes the Fujifilm F10 a very attractive digital camera.”
