Fujifilm today announced a secure underwater case to house the FinePix F710 Zoom, the UK’s first widescreen digital camera.  This robust sub-aqua unit allows the underwater photographer greater shooting versatility at depths of up to 40 metres, and has been ergonomically designed to withstand challenging conditions.

Ricoh Caplio GXLetsGoDigital have just posted their review of the Ricoh Caplio GX, a slim 5-megapixel 28mm wide-angle zoom digital camera.

“The Ricoh Caplio GX is an interesting digital camera which brings Ricoh in the spotlight again. The camera is equipped with high quality optics and a functional zoom range. The wide angle is getting more and more attractive to more manufacturers and it is good to see Ricoh taking the lead. The way Ricoh lets his camera focus is magnificent! The speed and precise way in which the camera focuses, but also the speed of the shutter release are features in which the Ricoh Caplio GX distinguishes itself.”

Bert P. Krages author of the “Legal Handbook for Photographers”, has published a 1-page PDF guide to what you can and cannot legally do as a photographer - well, at least in the USA anyway. Print a few copies out and carry them with you, just in case…

Now, does anyone know of a UK-specific version?

“The general rule in the United States is that anyone may take photographs of whatever they want when they are in a public place or places where they have permission to take photographs. Absent a specific legal prohibition such as a statute or ordinance, you are legally entitled to take photographs. Examples of places that are traditionally considered public are streets, sidewalks, and public parks.”

According to a report by the NEAsia Online website, sales of digital cameras by the six major Japanese digital camera manufacturers are predicted to reach 61.5 million units by the end of fiscal year 2004. This is a 52% year-on-year increase on the 40.45 million units that were sold for 2003. Canon seems to be doing particularly well:

“When looking at the numbers by manufacturer, Canon Inc stands out with its excellent results. The company had originally announced forecasts for the calendar year 2004 in its financial results published in January 2004, but in April revised that upward by 0.2 million units to the forecast to total 15.2 million units. For 2003, Canon’s year-on-year growth rate was 100%, and for 2004 it expects a growth of 76.7%. For both years, it has had the highest growth rate among the major six companies.”

Sony DSC-P93As usual, Steves Digicams is the first website in the world to review the brand new Sony DSC-P93, a 5-megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom.

“The Cyber-shot DSC-P93 is the 2004 upgrade to Sony’s popular DSC-P92 we reviewed last year. It incorporates the same high quality Sony 3x optical zoom lens and 5-megapixel resolution, and adds an improved 5-point AF system, enhanced shooting performance, and the ability to attach conversion lenses. Importantly, it offers something else that we’ve come to expect from annual product refresh cycles, better value; the DSC-P93’s MSRP is $50 less than DSC-P92 at the time of its introduction. “

Luminous Landscape have published a First Look at the 22-megapixel Phase One P25 medium format digital back.

“The Phase One H25 has become something of a benchmark for studio-based professional photographers during the nine months or so since introduction. There is something about Phase One’s ability to extract shadow detail and produce extremely clean raw files that seems to me to be just a step ahead of what is seen from other backs. When you add to this their world-class Capture One software, you have a first rate package.

Now along comes the P25, providing all of the above but in a self-contained package that can fit in the palm of ones hand and that functions on location as simply and transparently as a film magazine. Given this combination of characteristics it’s hard not to wax poetic.”

Olympus C-770 Ultra ZoomPocket-lint.co.uk have published a review of the 4-megapixel Olympus C-770 Ultra Zoom digital camera.

“For a mid-range camera, with the added MPEG feature, it’s well priced and extremely well made. For beginners, it’s easy to use and the layout will be familiar to anyone who has laid their hands on the Olympus range before. For the semi-professional or those looking for that second digital camera, there is the option to experiment a little more with shots but not enough to warrant the extra spend.”

ImageRecall Offers European Digital Camera Users Professional-Grade Photo Recovery with ImageRecall 2.0

The easy-to-use software is now available throughout Europe from ImageRecall’s network of distributors and retail stores.

Winchester, Hampshire, UK -June 22, 2004- ImageRecall announces the European availability of ImageRecall 2.0, a professional-grade photo recovery program that retrieves lost images, data and sound files from flash memory cards. According to the Photo Marketing Association, Europe overtook the Americas during 2003 as the world’s largest market for digital cameras, accounting for 36 percent of all units sold. This increasing popularity can be attributed to recent improvements in picture resolution that make it possible to take digital photos that are the same quality as film. Unlike film however, digital images are subject to losses from accidental deletions, reformatting and random corruptions. With more dependence than ever on digital film for keepsake images and professional shoots, losing digital pictures can be devastating.

Fujifilm launches Lablinkpro Internet Print Service linking pro-labs with professional photographers

Previewed at this year’s Focus 2004, Fuji Photo Film (UK) Ltd has officially launched LablinkPro, its eagerly awaited advanced internet print service.

Unlike existing internet print services that focus on general consumer retail business, LablinkPro has been specifically designed for pro-labs and professional photographers, linking the two together.

For pro-labs this approach represents the perfect way to tap into the growing professional internet print market, increasing processing levels and making Frontier minilab equipment work harder. Similarly for the LablinkPro photographer the system is designed to reduce processing time and streamline business practices, allowing them to obtain the best possible print quality and speed of service, whilst tying in these individuals to a pro-lab of their choice.

Canon CP-220 Photo PrinterPhoto.net have published a review of the Canon CP-220 compact photo printer. This is a small format portable dye-sub printer capable of printing 4x6 prints.

“If you need a portable printer, the CP-220 is an excellent choice. During the review no glitches occurred and the prints were generally of high quality. The prints are waterproof and fingerprint resistant which is something that may be very useful if you’re printing pictures at an event (a party for example), plus they can be sent through the mail as postcards. The only drawback to this portable printer is that it does need AC power to operate.”

A new report by InfoTrends/CAP Ventures has revealed that most digital camera owners never print out their photos, preferring to share them via email or the web instead. The number of photos taken has risen as digicams have become more popular, but the number of prints made is still the same as in film camera households.

So do you make lots of prints from your digital photos? Or is this study correct in saying that you take more pictures than ever before, but you don’t actually print them out? Leave your anecdotal evidence here…

Consumer Digital Photo Printing Habits Detailed in New InfoTrends/CAP Ventures Study

(Weymouth, MA) June, 23 2004… A new consumer study from InfoTrends/CAP Ventures reveals clear skies as well as clouds on the horizon for the digital photo printing industry.

The short-term outlook for the photo print industry is good. Among the positive signs are that digital camera users who print photos are taking far more pictures than they ever did with film and printing far more ?enlargements? (larger than 4? x 6? prints). In addition, these users expect their print volumes to increase in the future. On the other hand, excluding a few ultra-heavy users, the average photo print volumes and expenditures for digital camera users are currently no higher than film camera households. In addition, simple digital sharing through e-mail and other methods threatens to undermine the need for photo printing, unless vendors convince consumers that prints are an archival method as well as a sharing vehicle.

Epson PictureMateDP-Now have published one of the first reviews of the Epson PictureMate inkjet printer.

“If you showed a typical PictureMate photo print to most people they would have no difficulty in appreciating its photo-realistic quality. But to be ultra-critical, our tests show that colour reproduction can stray from the ideal and there is some bronzing of the print surface. There is no doubt that Epson’s excellent dye-based A4 photo printers produce better results, but the PictureMate’s fade-resistance abilities balance things up. Overall, the PictureMate is adequate in terms of print quality but there is definite room for improvement.”

“The ergonomics of the M410R are good, the controls are well placed and functional, and the menu system is easy to navigate. The 1.5-inch DayFine LCD works great outdoors, even on the brightest of days. When using the LCD or EVF in low-ambient lighting conditions, they “gain up” to increase visibility, which helps you frame your subject in these conditions. One thing Unlike other super-zoom cameras, the M410R’s EVF and LCD do not freeze up or hesitate when the camera is trying to focus. This allows you to easily follow fast-moving subjects during continuous or rapid sequence capture.”
